Summer Athletics Report
19th march, 2008

The Nowra Athletics Club Summer Athletics Competition had its final evening of events for 2007/08 season on Wednesday. In fact over the last two weeks the Club has been conducting a number of semi-finals and finals with other fun events to mark the end of the season.

As expected there were some brilliant performances from the Club's athletes. A fabulous effort from Jake Ring saw him break a long held Club record in the 3000m (18/19 Men) race. His new record goes with the 1000m record he picked up the previous week - breaking a mark set by Dean Seager way back in 1989!

The adoring crowds have appreciated the efforts of all participants over the last couple of weeks of competition especially in the Handicapped events.

This year's 100m Handicap champions Sonia Effaffi (A division) and Brodie O’Brien (B division) ran effortlessly to cross the line first in their respective finals. In the 1000 metre Handicap events Ava Jeffrey (B Division) and Nathan Weatherill (A Division) both put in a fantastic effort to win against the club's best in what turned out to be a very memorable race.

Junior runners enjoyed the opportunity to go around the track a few more times in their final event for the season in the 1200m race on Wednesday evening. While senior runners had great difficulty in deciding wether to run in the 3000m or 5000m race.

Alex Pitkethly and Patrick Ozolins, Peter Dooley, Michelle Cumming and Linda Wetherill all finished the season in style in the lengthier race and are sure to be in good form for the Cross Country season opener this weekend.

Summer Athletics Report
12th March, 2008

Summer Athletics on Wednesday saw the culmination of countless hours of training, intense desire and an ounce of luck in many of the events over the evening.

As expected the adoring crowds gathered to witness the finals of the 100 metre Handicap races. The athletes assumed their starting positions and moments later all the spectators were transfixed in the moment - the race and the struggle was then over in just a few seconds.

This year's 100 metre Handicap sprint champions Sonia Effaffi (A division) and Brodie O'Brien (B division) proved too strong for the competition and crossed the line first in their respective finals.

Later in the evening all attention was focussed around the running of the 1000 metre Handicap event. In the B Division race, Ava Jeffrey ran the race of her season dodging around fellow runners to work her way to the front finishing with a 100m break on the nearest competitor!

In the A Division event, up and coming runner Nathan Weatherill put in a fantastic effort to win against the club's best in what turned out to be a very memorable race.

In the same event Jake Ring smashed a long held club record in the U/18-19 Men's category. Starting the event as the back marker, Jake was set a mighty task to catch the field. In doing so, he cut six seconds off a record set by Dean Seager way back in 1989 – a brilliant result by anyone's measure.

It will be very difficult to top the excitement from last week in tonight's competition. However, race officials have organised a number of novelty events and unique races to finish off the 07/08 athletics season on a high.

This week will see the Club's Senior runners fighting it out over a 5km or 3km race, Club records are expected to fall. A 1200m race will make things interesting for the Juniors while a Pot Luck Pairs field event involving High Jump and Shot Put is sure to provide a few laughs for everyone.

For those runners who enjoy the great outdoors, Nowra Athletics Club's Cross Country Season commences on Saturday 22nd March at “Wilandra”, Browns Mountain Road, Cambewarra. Further announcements with details will be made over the coming weeks!

For more information on results, upcoming events, tack conditions and or cancellations visit the Club website (www.nowraathletics.org.au or just Google Nowra Athletics Club).

The final evening of Summer Athletics for 07/08 will be held at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, Nowra East (behind Shoalhaven High School). Registration and announcements will be from 5.30pm with competition commencing at 6.00pm sharp.

Summer Athletics  Report
5th March, 2008

Well, what can you say about the weather this season? It's been great for the track and all of the cross country courses but not so good for keeping an athletics competition to schedule.

As you all know last weeks competition was postponed due to poor weather and a rain sodden track. Hopefully this week Summer Athletics will get a start and all the clubs' athletes the opportunity to resume their Club Championship efforts.

Talking of efforts, a small group of merry men and women from the Nowra Athletics Club will be travelling way down South to a small island off Tasmania for a 32km race. Hard to believe I know, but someone has to do it.

Club President Kevyn Davis says that runners from the Club have a better than even chance of coming home with a bag full of trophies from the King Island endurance event. He also said that a small detour encompassing the Cadbury Chocolate factory was highly likely too. Best of luck gang!

Don’t forget tonight's Summer Athletics features the much anticipated 100m Handicap Semi-Finals. Additionally there will be a 1000m Handicap event in A and B divisions other events include an 800 race, 60 and 120 metre sprints, triple jump, high jump and handicap shuttle relays.

For more information on results, upcoming events, tack conditions and or cancellations visit the Club website (www.nowraathletics.org.au or just Google Nowra Athletics Club).

Summer Athletics Report
27th February, 2008

What a fantastic evening of athletic endeavour and entertainment we saw at Summer Athletics last Wednesday.

The Club 100m handicap races were in full swing in both A and B divisions. There was plenty of competition and everyone that had a go, finished with a smile on their face. Because of the very close finishes Race Officials had an extremely difficult time determining who came where and often resorted to video footage for confirmation.

Naturally, not everyone can win. However, all participants who achieved a top three placing in their heat will have an opportunity to race again tonight in the semi-finals. Please check the results section of the Paper to confirm your semi-final starting position.

In other events of the Club Age Championships on Wednesday evening athletes certainly produced season best results. Onlookers witnessed some fine track running and were treated to power displays in the Discus and Long Jump field events.

Smith sisters Jasmine and Tarlou out manoeuvred male runner Zac Jones in the opening 600m event. Later in the evening both girls produced another top class performance in the 2000m.

In the Junior 600m event Jarvis Strand and Mia Davidson had an awesome race. They were neck and neck over the whole distance and finished very strongly down the straight to be well clear of all other competitors. Great work!

Athletes will again compete in the Club's Age Championships tonight at Summer Athletics. Don't forget the 100m Handicap Semi-Finals are on and will no doubt be the races to watch. Additionally there will be a 1000m Handicap event in A and B divisions - again another one to watch. Other events include an 800 race, 60 and 120 metre sprints, triple jump, high jump and handicap shuttle relays.

Summer Athletics Report
20th February, 2008

It was great to be back on track at Summer Athletics on Wednesday evening. Good weather and a large contingent of athletes and their families made the starting round of the Club Age Championships a resounding success.

Competition was very strong in all events, with several athletes showing that age should never be a barrier and that extra training efforts pay off in the long run and long runs.

Patrick Ozolins went up a gear on Wednesday evening winning the Senior Men's 1000m event. Later in the evening he took second place in the 1500m race in a close finish with the very fit Alex Pitkethly.

Emerging young athlete Elise Russell claimed second in the Women's 1500 and 1000m events and performed extremely well in the sprints and other field events. She will no doubt be one to watch over the coming weeks as the Age Championships evolve.

Sisters Olivia and Maja Coles had a great night finishing well up the lists in both track and field events.

It was good to see the Chatter family doing the rounds at Summer Athletics, daughter Zoe made the most of every event giving all she had.  Dad (Anthony) shone in the sprints and javelin and through out the challenge to Veteran athletes Barry Creer and Dean Bryce in their bid for Championship glory.

Athletes will again compete in the Club's Age Championships tonight at Summer Athletics. Events will include 600 and 2000 metre races, an 80 metre sprint, long jump and discus.

Tonight also marks the start of everyone's favourite the 100m Handicap Races. Make sure you check the Notice Board in the administration area for your race and handicap details. Please notify officials if your name is not on the list or if you're not competing.

Summer Athletics Report
13th February, 2008

Like everything else around the district last week, Summer Athletics on Wednesday evening was washed out. Although a grass running track provides good cushioning and a natural feel it isn't however weatherproof.

Don't despair, if the weather stays fine and the track dries out to a reasonable standard, Summer Athletics will be on tonight. With the Age Championships commencing this week and the Annual Handicap Races heats starting Club members are sure to give it their best.

Events in the Age Championships held over the next four weeks, include javelin, shot put, discus and long jump with various sprints and middle distance races. Something for everyone!

So make sure you come along over the next 4 weeks of competition and enjoy the atmosphere, the energy and a great family sport.

23rd January, 2008

Predictions of wet and wild weather proved to be a furphy at Summer Athletics on Wednesday evening. The first round of competition for 2008 blasted off with all athletes and their families' ready for action and rearing to go.

The new program of events saw the evening kick off with a brisk 800m run that everyone enjoyed.  Following on, the seniors had plenty of fun with the javelin, the juniors made short work of the discus and the speedier athletes limbered up in the sprints.

The final event for the evening was the 2000 metres which gave athletes the opportunity to finally clear out the cobwebs from Christmas and the New Year. Alex Pitkethly scrubbed up pretty well and set a new Club record in the 18yr Men's category. Great effort!

Club members are bursting with pride after the results from the State Country Club Championships were announced. The Nowra Athletics Club finished in third position from a field of ten Country Clubs. A fantastic result given the size of our Club and the number of other commitments Club members and their families were undertaking at the time. Well done!

Summer Athletics Report
12th December, 2007

Record Summer Pointscore Ends

NOWRA Athletics Club concluded its summer track and field pointscore competition last Wednesday (5-12-07)on a record note.

Three records fell to veterans Tammy Jones, Cristine Suffolk and Peter Dooley, but the whole season has been record breaking from round one to round 11 with the veterans leading the way.

The performances of Linda Weatherill (40-49 group) and Peter Dooley (50-60 group) were remarkable.

Linda accounted for eight records, while Peter polished off six.

Crissy Suffolk lowered her own 3000 metres record for 30-39 group, she set in 2001!

Most of the veteran competitors are parents of club members and it must be encouraging and rewarding for those taking part to be involved with their family.

Ring and Harvey, stars on the rise.

Record breaking is not for the old folks alone - Jake Ring entered the record books by breaking one of the club's historical records. He lowered the 28-year-old under 18 years 800 metres record set byAlan Ozolins in 1979!

Ozolins went on to be two times Australian 800 metres champion and international representative.

On a night with storms threatening, rain falling and Jake's coach, Rob McDonald chewing his finger nails, Jake ran away from his pace makers to complete the last lap on his own and take the record by 0.3 seconds.

This is a significant record !

Campbell Harvey broke a discus record (his mum Gayle set a 40 - 49 group high jump record by the way) but Campbell is a top 400 and 800 metres competitor as well as reasonable thrower.

Last weekend at the Australian Schools Championships in Sydney Campbell just missed the 800 final by one place, but made the 400 final and finished fourth in a personal best time of 54.61 seconds.

His time in the 800, 2 .10.58 was also a PB. Watch this space for news of these two lads.

The whole summer Pointscore Competition, which featured the NSW on line Country Club Premiership was one of the best in recent memory.

Club members answered the call and contested many events to gain points for this premiership. Many produced great performances and excelled themselves. With weather and fluctuating attendances affecting results, it is not known as yet where the club placed in the competition.

The club was up against Central Coast and Wollongong Clubs who have the luxury of synthetic tracks, all await the final results.

Social Night Tonight.

The last events for 2007 are tonight at the Ron Brown Complex, with novelty races and a Christmas get together.

Presentation of various awards will be made and a sausage sizzle and other eats will be available at no charge.

If the weather looks bad come anyway, this is the last meet for the year.

Programs for 2008 will be available tonight. Events will restart on January 9, 2008.

Events planned for January will be a useful 'sharpen up' for the Country Championships.

There is important administration to organise for the Country Championships, which will be held at Newcastle on January 26-27th, 2008.

Club members interested in these championships should contact Jan Gibb without delay.

Summer Athletics Report
5th December, 2007

Once again athletes from the Nowra Athletics Club turned out in great numbers to compete in the NSW Country Championship Pointscore at Summer Athletics on Wednesday.

The first pointscore event was the 400 metre race. The junior athletes performed at their best as usual, while the seniors ran and ran and ran. Michelle Smith blitzed the field in the Women's Vets event finishing a good 50 metres in front.

An expectant crowd gathered around the Men's High Jump event as the long and lean showed how to take to the air. James Benning, Patrick Ozolins and Murray Parnell were the best of the evening and kept the high jump officials busy raising the bar at every turn.

Steve McCullagh ran a fantastic race in the Men's 1500 metre event chasing down some enthusiastic younger runners in the last lap. Zac Jones and Tarlou Smith had the crowd on their toes as they went around in their 1500 metre event. Well done!

Tammy Jones showed the competitive spirit in the Medley relay putting her team in a great position in the final. Young runners Sam Baxter, Chole Button, Courtney Button Ava Jeffrey, Madeleine Jeffrey, Samantha Jeffrey, Jessica Baxter and Jaymee Bryce all had fantastic runs too.

Summer Athletics Report
27th November, 2007

An overcast evening at Summer Athletics on Wednesday evening could in no way dampen the spirits of Nowra Athletics Club athletes and their supporters. NSW Country Club Championships points were there to be had and long held club records were there to be broken.

Junior athlete Jake Ring set a new Club record in the 16/17 Yr category and broke a record that has stood for 28 years! Jake led a field of the Club's best middle distance runners in the 800 metre event, flying home over the last 150 metres finishing well clear of the Club's senior athletes.

Peter Dooley in the same race came within a hare's breath of setting a new Club record, only missing out by 0.4 of a second in the 50-59Yrs category.

Unfortunately the threat of electrical storms and rain saw an early close to Wednesday's proceedings. However, a number of the sprint and field events were completed prior to the close enabling the Club to submit results in the NSW Country Championships competition.

Please check the Club's website (www.shoal.net.au/~nowraathletics or just Google Nowra Athletics Club) for individual results and a link to the Athletics NSW Website to keep up to date with the points tally in the NSW Country Championship.

The next two weeks in the Country Championships are critical to the Club's overall success. Forget about the weather we need every capable person and or athlete to enter as many events as possible at Summer Athletics over the next two weeks. If we all pitch in and have a go we might just get the better of some of the more fancied opposition and come home with a win. It'll be a great way to finish off 2007!

Talking of finishing off another top year of athletics, Wednesday 12th December will be the final night's competition for this year (with competition resuming in early January). The Club is planning to have a Xmas BBQ and get together with fun athletic events being conducted over the evening. The Club invites everyone to come along and enjoy themselves.

In other news, Club Members are reminded that the State Athletic Country Championships in Newcastle are coming up in late January. Nowra Athletics Club has traditionally been well represented and always features prominently in the winners circle.

Summer Athletics Report
21st November, 2007

Another successful evening of Summer Athletics was had at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex on Wednesday evening.

Nowra Athletic Club members were out in force all eager to participate in the NSW Country Championship pointscore.

Veteran male athlete Pat Davitt contributed to the points tally by passing the qualifying height of 1.2 metres. Not content with the result he worked his way up to 1.45 metres to clear the bar on his first attempt. Sensational!

Kiarny Blacker, Stephanie Stretton and Laura Daley lead by example in a Women's 400 metre event. Getting away early and continuing with a measured amount of pace over the back straight to enable them to round the final bend at maximum speed. Finishing the race in style with nothing left to spare!

Once again the final race of the evening was the medley relay consisting of 2 x 200, 1 x 400 and a 1 x 800 legs. Great efforts from team runners in the events ensured fabulous results and finished off another fantastic night at the track. Well done everyone!

Summer Athletics Report
14th November, 2007

Unfortunately rain and a very slippery track forced Nowra Athletics Club to cancel Summer Athletics on Wednesday evening last week. (7-11-07)

However, with the good weather returning it should be on tonight. But please check the Nowra Athletics Club website (www.shoal.net.au/~nowraathletics - or just Google Nowra Athletics Club) to confirm.

Club officials are extremely pleased with the level of effort and participation in this years NSW Country Club Championship. Every athlete who enters an event over the next three weeks gains points for the Club just for participation. Summer Athletics Report
7th November, 2007

Last Wednesday evening saw a large gathering of athletes all have a fantastic time competing for themselves and the Nowra Athletics Club in the NSW Country Club Championships.

There was a great sense of sportsmanship and camaraderie with all athletes competing in multiple events. The evening finished later than expected due to the large number of entrants in each event. However there were no complaints as everyone, including officials, enjoyed themselves to the full.

The Medley relay generated the most interest and was conducted at the end of the evening's competition. Surprisingly all the athletes that took part in the teams event backed up from a demanding string of earlier events with no loss in performance or competitive enthusiasm.

It was certainly an inspiring sight to see so many of the Club's members put in a supreme effort in the final stages of very demanding races for the good of their relay teams and the Club.

There were some wonderful team performances at Summer Athletics and plenty of individual performances worth a mention too. The forever youthful Peter Dooley (400m), Tammy Jones(Triple Jump) and Linda Weatherill(1500m) all set new Club records and competed in every event on Wednesday. I wonder what they'll do this week.

Brady Spelta and Zac Jones finished the Junior Boys 1500m race with a sprint to the line crossing together in a dead heat for first and second place. Elise Russell and Kaitlyn Bryce also had a great race in the A Grade Women's section of the 1500.

In the 400m event Danika Heron, Kiarny Blacker and Natasha Moore showed fantastic style coming around the final bend to catapult themselves down the straight for line honours.

Men's A grade 400m runners Leigh Finch, Patrick Ozolins and Campbell Harvey gave the crowd something to watch right from the start with a brilliant display of both speed and tactics. Well done!

The balance of the Club's performances including results of individual athletes in each event will be posted on the Nowra Athletics Club site (www.shoal.net.au/~nowraathletics - or just Google Nowra Athletics Club) which will have a link to the Athletics NSW website (www.nswathletics.org.au) for the NSW Country Club Championship results table and pointscore.

Don't forget to keep an eye on the Club's position in the Championship and please enter every event over the next three weeks to ensure maximum points for the Club.

Summer Athletics will be held this Wednesday 7th November at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, East Nowra (behind Shoalhaven High School).  Start time is 6.00pm with administration and announcements from 5.30pm.

If the weather seems doubtful please check the Club Website (www.shoal.net.au/~nowraathletics or just Google Nowra Athletics Club) or tune to 2ST for cancellation details.

New members are always welcome at the Nowra Athletics Club and our Summer Athletics Competition. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Summer Athletics Report
31st October, 2007

It's that time of the year again, the NSW Country Club Championships commence this Wednesday evening at Summer Athletics.

Held over the next four weeks the Club Championships will see Country Athletic Clubs across the State compete in a predetermined series of events. Points will be awarded to each Club dependant on the position and number of athletes entered in each event.

What this means is that the Nowra Athletics Club has a great opportunity to win the Championship if all the Club's athletes enter as many events as possible.

The Championship events include all field events and most sprint and middle distance races. Tonight's events include 100, 400 and 1500 metre races with long jump and shot put.

The Club's performances including results of individual athletes in each event will be posted on the Athletics NSW website (www.nswathletics.org.au).

There will be a direct link to the NSW Athletics result page from the Nowra Club Website when the competition gets underway.

So keep an eye on the Club's position in the Championship and please enter every event over the next four weeks. Talking of websites make sure you visit the Nowra Athletics Club site (www.shoal.net.au/~nowraathletics or just Google Nowra Athletics Club) to keep informed about the Club's activities and your individual results each week. Most importantly the Club website will let you know if Summer Athletics is cancelled due to bad weather conditions.

Last Wednesday evening's Summer Athletics wasn't cancelled because the Ron Brown Sporting Complex and the surrounding area received little or no rain!

The Athletes and families who did attend had a fantastic night. Junior girl Zoe Chatter showed outstanding character and ability in the shot put and sprint events and is surely one to watch over the coming season.

Other sterling performances in the shot put event came from Zac Jones, Angus Clarke and the Lowbridge family. All boys gave one hundred percent and achieved personal best results. Well done!

800 metre runners Jasmine and Tarlou Smith, Mia Davidson and Ava Jeffrey thrilled the crowd with a fine display of middle distance running. All girls gave as much as they possibly could finishing with a strong sprint down the straight in classic fashion.

Patrick Ozolins left nothing behind in his 800 metre race and is showing signs of bigger things to come.

Summer Athletics will be held this Wednesday 31st October at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, East Nowra (behind Shoalhaven High School).  Start time is 6.00pm with administration and announcements from 5.30pm.

Don't forget to check the Club Website (www.shoal.net.au/~nowraathletics or just Google Nowra Athletics Club if the weather turns a little nasty.

New members are always welcome at the Nowra Athletics Club and our Summer Athletics Competition. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Summer Athletics Report

17th October, 2007

Over the past week several Nowra Athletics Club members provided outstanding performances at Australian and State Championships.

The State All Schools Championships held in Sydney last week saw local athletes Alex Pitkethly and Ned Price claim Bronze medals in the 17yrs Steeplechase and the 19yrs 200m. With middle distance runner Jake Ring producing a personal best time in the 1500m final for 6th place and 4th place in the 800m event.

Meanwhile Nowra Athletics Club Life Member Cristine Suffolk, travelled down to the Australian Masters in Adelaide and returned home again with four gold medals.

Cristine gave the Championship meet a good shakedown producing record times in two events. The gold medals came from the 800, 1500 and 5000m track finals and the 8km Cross Country event.

Word has it that she had to pay duty at the border for all the gold she was bringing into NSW!

At the local level Linda Weatherill is having a fantastic year at Summer Athletics. On Wednesday evening a long held 3000m record (set in 1989) was bettered by a substantial margin. Not content with just one new record, Linda followed on with a record breaking jump in the Women's Long Jump too!

All in all another great week for Athletics in the Shoalhaven.

As usual the Nowra Athletics Club Summer Athletics competition is on again this evening. No doubt some of the Club's best will be out there trying to break new records and achieve PB's. But you'll also see plenty of mums and dads and their families out there enjoying the simple things in life - running, jumping and throwing.

So why not come along yourself and have a go, everyone's welcome.

Tonight's events include 60, 100 and 1500 metre races with high jump, triple and long jump events, shot put and discus. The final event (time permitting) will be a fun team relay.

Due to the large number of entrants Club Officials are fairly stretched at times and would appreciate assistance from any athletes, club members or parents. To make it easier for any would be helpers or trainee officials' ample information and advice about scoring and running individual events is readily available - so please assist where you can.

This weeks Summer Athletics competition at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, East Nowra (behind Shoalhaven High School) promises to be another great evening. Registration and announcements will be from 5.30pm with competition commencing at 6.00pm sharp.

New members are always welcome at the Nowra Athletics Club and our Summer Athletics Competition. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Summer Athletics Report
10th October, 2007

Despite the odd mosquito Summer Athletics on Wednesday (3-10-07)saw another good turnout of athletes and their families enjoying a beautiful Shoalhaven evening.

There was a high level of participation in most events so much so that several races were required in the same event to accommodate all the entrants.

The 1500 metre event continues to be a very popular race with both Junior and Senior runners. With only three and three quarter laps to run, athletes have no time to settle into a rhythm and usually feel the competitive urge to stay in front. Both of these factors contribute to make this event one of the most interesting for spectators and one of the best for runners who enjoy competition and strive to better themselves -  win, lose or draw.

The records just keep falling week after week at Nowra Athletics Club's Summer Athletics competition, athletes are consistently improving in personal best times and are continually setting new club records.

Speaking of records mother and son Gayle and Campbell Harvey have thrown out the challenge in the discus this season setting new records in their respective divisions. New club member and talented young athlete Natalie Huntsman set a club record (16-17 yrs girls) in the Triple Jump.

Barry Creer has also set another record in the 40-49 yr Men's field events with a Javelin throw of 44.35 metres. Long time Club members Linda Weatherill and Peter Dooley have both set new bench marks in all but a few of the track events in the Vet Women's and Men's categories.

Tonight's events include 80, 200, 800 and 3000 metre races with high jump and long jump events, shot put and discus.

Due to the large number of entrants Club Officials are fairly stretched at times and would appreciate assistance from any athletes, club members or parents. Information and advice about scoring and running individual events is readily available to make it easy for any would be helpers or trainee officials.

New members are always welcome at the Nowra Athletics Club and our Summer Athletics Competition. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Summer Athletics Report - 3rd October, 2007

The last two weeks at Summer Athletics have seen good numbers of young, old and in-between athletes, all keen and fully charged to enjoy a great evening out in the spring air. There's been fantastic running, jumping and throwing with plenty of laughs, tonnes of fun and a good helping of camaraderie.

Summer Athletics isn't just about winning, participation and enjoyment are much more important. It's a great feeling to come first in your race or division, however the real rewards come from knowing that you've taken part in a great sport and have done your best.

Wednesday's meet (26-09-07) saw a large field of runners in the junior 800 and 3000 metre events which kept race officials busy and onlookers excited with the action packed racing.

Another couple of events that saw plenty of action and participation were the Men's and Women's Discus and High Jump. Cheers of encouragement could be heard all over the ground when athletes let fly. Several high jump athletes produced personal bests and came very close to surpassing long held club records!

Other successes on Wednesday evening came from the volunteer officials and helpers whose work and assistance was most appreciated. Thank you - we admire your judgment, commitment and sense of humour!

Congratulations to all those who participated and we hope to see you again this week.

Club officials are expecting another large field of athletic families and individuals at Summer Athletics this Wednesday at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, East Nowra (behind Shoalhaven High School). This week's events include 1500m and 400m races, sprints and numerous field events. Events start at 6.00pm sharp, so competitors need to arrive by approximately 5.45pm.

Nowra Athletics Club is delighted to see an increase in people at the Summer Athletics competition for this season and trust that all members and participants are enjoying the number and variety of events.

Track & Field Athletics - 19th September, 2007

Summer Athletics on Wednesday evening saw another great turnout of competitors and their families all eager to step up to the challenge and have a go!

Last Wednesday's card included a 1500 metre event, throws (javelin, discus and shot put), high jumps with several sprints - which enabled everyone to have fun with their families and friends.

Younger athletes took advantage of the near perfect conditions, entering almost every event in large numbers. The throws, field events and the 1500m race were more popular with parents and the experienced (veteran) athletes.

Normally an evening of Summer Athletics is concluded with fun circular or shuttle relay events. Unfortunately events ran past the scheduled time causing the cancellation of the relays.

For any club members wishing to continue with competitive distance running on Saturday evenings, the Summer Road Runs competition is now underway. Any interested runners should contact Kevyn Davis on 44478309, Terry Bailey on 44216065 or Paul & Tracy Jennings on 44218332 for further details.

Interested in losing weight, keeping fit and spending time with your family and friends? Then why not consider joining Nowra Athletics Club and have some fun on Wednesday evenings. We invite you to join our club and enjoy a graded competition for all ages in all events.

New members are always most welcome. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there!

It was all action at Summer Athletics at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex on Wednesday evening. The weather was perfect, the track was at its' best and all the athletes were rearing to go.

Before the evenings activities got off to a start Club Patron, Rod Gibb welcomed all athletes to the Nowra Athletics Club and gave a brief talk about the Summer Athletics competition.

The first event for the evening was the 1000m race where a large contingent of runners in ages from 4 to 64 all got involved. In the Junior race Yolanda Van Arkel and Brady Spelta lead all the way, finishing with a flat out sprint over the last 150 to cross the line within metres of each other.

In the Senior race Alex Pitkethly and Paul Davidson livened up the pace early and finished well clear in the season opener.

Other events for the evening included Shot Put, Long Jump, 60m Sprints and a handicapped 100m relay. What a way to start Summer Athletics 2007/08!

This evening at Summer Athletics (Wednesday, 19th September)  marks the commencement of the pointscore competition. Athletes will be grouped according to ability and compete for points in all entered events.

Naturally, the more events the athlete enters the higher the chance they will take out their Divisional trophy come presentation night early next year.

In order for athletes to compete the Club requires officials and helpers at each event, the field events in particular have a need for three or four. Without helpers and officials events can not commence -  so please put your hand up and assist where you can.

Information and rules for all events in written form are available in the registration area. Further to this, helpful and friendly Club Committee members are on hand to advise and encourage.
