Presentation & Fun Run Runners and their families from the Nowra Athletics Club had a relaxed afternoon at the last Cross Country outing for the 2010 season at Willandra on Saturday. A fun run for 1km and 2km runners went off first while the 3km, 4km and long course runners shared the track a little later in the afternoon. As usual everyone had a great time enjoying the sunshine and the beautiful Willandra property. A short presentation followed where all cross country runners received certificates for their participation. Congratulations go to all divisional winners in the Nowra Toyota Pointscore Competition and to the fastest male and female runners in each division. A full rundown of points and placings is available on the Club website and the results section of the paper. Naturally every person who spent some time at cross country this year was a winner. And as everyone knows, getting a win quite often requires a lot of hard work from the individual as well as a number of other people. In that vein, a big thank you goes to all officials and volunteers who assisted the club throughout the 2010 Cross Country season. Well done to all athletes, officials and their families who represented the Club at the various State events this year. Once again Rod & Jan Gibb deserve special mention for their tireless efforts for the Club and for making Willandra such a wonderful place to experience Cross Country running. Club members are reminded that the Summer Road Runs competition kicks off this Saturday at the Nowra Showground at 4pm. Registration and administration will be from around 3.40pm. Additionally, the annual String Relay is organised for the following weekend on Sunday 12th September. The run will be from Bundanoon to Willandra and is due to start at 7.30am. Please contact Kevyn Davis 44478309, Terry Bailey on 44216065 or Bill Seary on 44227626 or Paul Jennings on 44218332 as soon as possible for further details. The Nowra Athletics Club also conducts an “evening” athletics competition (Summer Athletics) from September through to late February. Summer Athletics is a graded competition which encourages athletes of all ages and abilities to participate. A comprehensive athletics programme will be on offer including running events, field events, some races with handicaps and the occasional fun or novelty event. Some enter every event whilst others stick to what they like. Athletics is a great family sport, especially with the Nowra Athletics Club - so why not come along and enjoy the fun! The Summer Athletics Competition starts on Wednesday 15th September at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex (behind Shoalhaven High School) at 6.00pm sharp. Cross Country Report Nowra Athletics Club members travelled to Kembla Joggers’ home ground at Dapto on Saturday afternoon for the return leg of the McCaffrey Challenge. The course was superbly presented and had plenty of friendly marshals to keep us all on track. The lush course had beautiful green grass rolling on as far as the eye could see. There were a few lines of trees strategically placed along the way and a small bridge to cross in each event. Except for the fact that there were no hills in the 2 & 3km races, it made us all feel like we were home at Willandra. |

Fourteen year old Arron Spiessberger-Parker had an outstanding performance in the 4km event finishing in outright 3rd place whilst finishing first for Nowra. Joel Lord and Andrew Munro were next home while Cristine Suffolk, Scott Johnson, Alasdair Stratton and Matt Brennan all finished within seconds of each other and well up the rankings. Patrick Ozolins and Peter Dooley both had a fantastic afternoon at the Dapto course finishing the 4km race in 16.01 and 16.06 – wow! The 1km gang were keen to contribute in the points table; Alastair Urquhart, Jessica Munro and Harriet Urquhart were the Club’s best. Well done! Kye Jones, Jade Mustapic and Kiara White had a great time in the 2km event while other runners Jo Munro, Kieren Harrison, Briony Munro and Murray Schofield put in plenty too. Despite the best efforts of all the Club members who ran, the Kembla Joggers Club edged ahead in the points table and secured the McCaffrey Challenge Shield for the next twelve months. Congratulations go to the

Cross Country Report The beautiful Willandra course played host to Nowra Athletics Club cross country runners on the weekend. Club members and their families had one of the best Saturday afternoons this Winter – sunny, a slight breeze and a temperature perfect for running. All the events had plenty of keen starters, some super fit others not so, but everyone had a go and enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately all good things come to an end at some time. There are only two more weeks of cross country running in the 2010 season. But never fear, the next two Saturdays will be fantastic and well worth the effort. This coming Saturday will be the final round in the Nowra Toyota Winter pointscore and the last opportunity to gain a few points in the Club Championships. To make things more interesting, as we usually do, it will be a sealed handicap event. Everyone is also aware that Saturdays’ cross country will be held at Kembla Joggers Cross Country facility at Dapto, for the return leg of the McCaffrey Challenge. There will be the same or very similar events to a normal Saturday run. The only difference is that each runner who attends will be gaining points for the Club in the McCaffrey Challenge. The points tally between the two Clubs is very close in most events at the moment. It’s very important to have as many runners there as possible to help us retain the Club shield. You’re guaranteed to have a great afternoon in the company of friends, so make sure you come along. The Kembla Joggers track is at Integral Energy Park, Darkes Road, Brownsville (Dapto) – drive through the township of Dapto travel north on the Princes Hwy turn left onto Darkes Road. A map showing the location of the Kembla Joggers course is available on-line at this Club’s website ( to Map). The journey from Nowra to Dapto takes approximately one hour by car - runners should be at the course by around 2.00pm for the shorter events and around 2.30pm for the longer races. In other Club news the Summer Athletics Competition commences on Wednesday 15th September at 6.00pm. at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex behind Shoalhaven High School, Park Road, Nowra. A comprehensive athletics programme will be on offer including running events, field events, some races with handicaps and the occasional fun or novelty event. The Summer Road Runs Competition starts on Saturday 4th September at the Nowra Showground. Further details are available at the Club website. Did you know that Alexander the Great’s army, when on the march, would run 30 miles (48kms) a day for weeks on end with full battle kit! Cross Country Report
The Timberhills course is part of Ron and Ruth McKinnon’s family property which they’ve generously made available for the club for more than 30 years. All members of the Nowra Athletics would like to sincerely thank the McKinnon Family for the use of their property and for the continued support they give to the club. The annual Pot Luck Pairs challenge was on again and everyone who raced had a great time and shared a few laughs. As expected competition was friendly, each pairing had to cross the finish line together and hope they had the best combined time. As with any race there can only be one winner, this year’s 2km winners in the Blue group were Jack Stratten and Emma Moore, while White group winners Luke Kellett and Ella Davidson were gracious in victory too. Female runners dominated the 3km event winning both groups. Taylah Henning and Mia Davidson (Blue) and Lisa Carroll and Briony Munro (White) — well done girls! In the 5km pairs’ race, experienced runners Richard Bosdyk and Eric Moeller Duhme were first home in the Blue group Deb Clarke and Karen Jones had the legs to win the White group race while Kylie Stewart and Allison Coates put in a greate ffort for second. Club runners are reminded that the return event for the McCaffrey Challenge will be at the Kembla Joggers West Dapto cross-country facility on Saturday, August 21. Anyone wishing to travel in the club bus should talk to Kevyn Davis (4447 8309) as soon as possible. The club website will have a map and address details for those travelling by car. Cross Country Longreach It was a great day for cross country running at the Longreach course on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fantastic and the Club’s runners were looking fitter than ever. Alex Pitkethly took out line honours in the sealed handicap of the Long Course event while in-form veterans Scott Foggo and Bill Stahlhut picked up second and third. Early results show that most of the field came home with season best performances – well done gang! The 2010 winter season is quickly drawing to a close. With only two rounds of the Nowra Toyota Winter Pointscore left and a couple of special events, runners should make the most of the remaining cross country activities. Club members should also note that the last round of pointscore competition on Saturday 21st August will be held at the Kembla Joggers new Cross Country track at West Dapto. On that Saturday the Club will be competing in the return leg of the McCaffrey Challenge. We need a big roll up of runners for the return match to help make up the gap in the points table. To make it easy for transport the Club will be running a coach up to Dapto and will subsidise the cost. If you wish to travel by coach please contact Kevyn Davis on 4447 8309 as soon as possible. So far our 50th birthday year has been one of celebration and achievement and just recently following the State schools cross country championships three Club members have been selected in Athletics NSW teams for the Australian Cross Country Championships in Brisbane on 21st August. Congratulations to Gus Frank, Michaela Quinn and Harry Scouller. Michaela and Harry, coached by Rob McDonald and Gus under the guidance of Sharon Gibb- Creer have made the team following a season of fine performances. The loss of these gun runners for the McCaffrey Challenge will mean the Nowra squad will have to lift for the occasion. With the City to Surf, State Half Marathon and Marathon and the Australian Cross Country still to be run, Club members thoughts may not be yet on the Summer Athletics Competition, but the track and field season is not far away. Club officials are aware that some of the
regular helpers and officials that usually take part in the summer
track and field season will not be available, so the need for more
officials is now quite serious. Anyone willing to assist or seek more information should contact Club Secretary, Jan Gibb 44460226. The planning of the programme for the summer will be considered in relation to the number of officials that may be available. Saturday’s Cross Country running will be held at the Timberhills Course at McKinnon’s Farm, Kell’s Road, Tomerong and will be a “Pot Luck Pairs” family race day. Every runner will be paired up with another runner before the racing starts, so make sure you’re there a little early to be part of the fun. To find Timberhills, simply drive South down the Princes Hwy and look for a right hand turn (Kell’s Road) marked with X-Country signs on the Tomerong by-pass. Travel up Kell’s Road for about 1.5km till you reach Timberhills on the right hand side. The first event starts at approximately 2.30pm. New runners or members should ensure that any registration or administration requirements are attended to before 2.15pm. For additional enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Saturday. Willandra Cross Country
Report |
|
|
Runners from the Nowra Athletics Club enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of cross country running at Willandra on Saturday. The weather and track conditions were perfect for running and a couple of hundred members and their families made the most of it. There were five events on the card on Saturday - starting out with the young runners’ 1km race and finishing with the 8km long course event. Prior to the start Club officials congratulated all members who competed or were there in support at the recent NSW Short Course Cross Country Championships. Further mention was made of the members who won medals – congratulations! In other running news Club members should keep Saturday 21st of August clear for the return event in the McCaffrey Challenge against Kembla Joggers. The Club will be travelling to the Kembla Joggers new cross country facility at West Dapto. There will be a number of events run over the afternoon which will no doubt cater to everyone’s needs. Another event in the short term is the annual City to Surf race in Sydney (8th August). A large contingent of Club members usually attend and make a day of it, best of luck to those who make the effort. Talking of effort, several of the Club’s keener runners got up early on Sunday morning for the journey to Sutherland to compete in the Sutherland to Surf fun run. By all reports, Club members enjoyed the morning and the 11km event - the only complaint from members was that there weren’t enough hills! Next Saturday’s cross country running at Longreach is guaranteed to provide plenty of hills for everyone. So water, fruit or a healthy snack (for afterwards) and your running shoes. The first race (1km) starts at 2.30pm, registration and administration is from 2.00pm. The Longreach course can be found on Longreach Road, Longreach. New runners or members should ensure that any registration or administration requirements are attended to before 2.15pm. For additional enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Saturday. STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS SUCCESS CONTINUES. While Nowra Athletics Club members took part in Round 14 of the Nowra Toyota winter pointscore at Longreach, a smaller than usual group of club members contested the State short course cross country championships at Rydalmere in Sydney. In what is becoming a normal occurrence the club athletes rise to the task and produce great performances. Gold, silver and bronze medals were won and some fine running took place on a sunny day over a testing, twisting course. The young and the ‘older’ won the gold medals. The under 14 boys squad went to Rydalmere with the hope of winning a fourth State team championship this season and they certainly did this in a fine display of team running. With a lot stronger opposition from Sydney clubs that do not travel to venues outside the city, the boys had their work cut out but with ninth, tenth, seventeenth and nineteenth placings, they did the job in remarkable fashion. Gus and Jed Frank, Jye Edwards and Sam Woods made up the team. Remarkable is also the word for Linda Weatherill who in defence of the State title she won at this course last year, ran a great race to finish 32nd overall in a large field of 145 and convincingly won the gold medal again in the 45 plus age group. In this same race Nowra won two bronze medals. These went to Cristine Suffolk for the 40 plus age group and Maureen Cox for the 60 plus group. Milton Cox also brought home a bronze for the 60 plus group. The under 12 girls won the team silver medal in dramatic fashion and like the under 14 boys who made it four out of four, these little cuties (you know, with the club colours hair ribbons) have four out of four team silver medals but it was not without drama as Jade Mustapic fell right at the start and 76 other runners swept past. Jade got going again about 30 meteres behind the field and in the 1.5 km race managed to over take twenty other runners. Jade with Layne Jones, Shenay Edwards and Tara Mustapic made up the team. Great work girls. Alex Pitkethly now 20 is in the open division and is doing well among the hot shots. He had a good run in the 7.5 km open championship for 46th place out of 140. It was great to see keen Mums Melinda Mustapic and Angela Edwards flying the colours in the open 5km along with James and Clayton Gibb in the under 16 and under 12 events respectively. The boys are grandsons of Jan and Rod. For good measure Anne Marie Frank and daughters Takesha and Ruby took part in the Fun Run that was the first event on the day. Now to the running at Longreach and a good roll up of runners across the various courses was noted. With only four more rounds of pointscore remaining the competition is hotting up. Those who are keeping tabs on their progressive pointscore will know how important the next few weeks will be. Check the results each week on the Website for your points. Club members are reminded that the final round of pointscore will be August 21st at West Dapto where we will be visiting the Kembla Joggers new cross country course for the return match of the McCaffrey Challenge. Members are also reminded that we are behind on points after the first round which was held at Willandra and we need a big rollup to catch up. Keep this date free, the distances to be run are the same as we usually run in our weekly events. Next Saturday we return to Willandra for round 15, events start at 2.30 pm.

STATE ROAD RELAY SUCCESS. |
|
|
It seems that the Nowra Athletics Club 50th birthday celebrations will continue in the form of great performances by club members at State Championships. The Club’s relay teams journeyed to Wollongong for the Road Relay Championships on the spectacular Flagstaff Hill course. The medal tally of one gold, three silver and four bronze was significant in the face of stiff competition with our neighbourly rivals Kembla Joggers and the strong city clubs and the other top country club Mingara. It is noted that some of the other teams were just edged out of a place in some keenly contested races. There was a great enthusiasm evident among club members and there would have been some personal best times recorded on the fast road course. In all, the club athletes can be justly proud of their efforts. The under 14 boys continued their undefeated season so far and were responsible for the gold medal. Gus and Jed Frank, Jye Edwards and Sam Woods are developing into a strong squad. Will they be able to do it again next week at the Short Course Country at Rydalmere in Sydney? Silver medal teams were the under 12 girls still with their cute hair ribbons. Shenay Edwards, Kiara White, Jade Mustapic and Emily Cornell made up this successful team. The 55 plus Ladies Jill Smith. Maureen Cox, Eva
Moeller – Duhme and Helen Redenbach and the 45 plus men Bill
Stahlhut, Perry strand, Graeme Pepper and John Schol were the other
silver winners. While all this was going on in Wollongong Club members were in action at Tomerong on the Timberhills course. There was a lay day in the Nowra Toyota winter competition but some running took place anyway and it was a muddy run at that. Next Saturday we go back to Longreach Road for round 14 or those involved in the State short course cross country championships will be at Upjohn Park Rydalmere. CRISSY SUFFOLK IN PARADISE. While fellow club members were a little chilly at home Cristine Suffolk was in the island paradise of Tahiti competing in the Oceania Masters Games. Her medal haul was quite impressive with gold in the cross country 5000 metres , silver in the Cross Country teams 800 m and1500m Medley Relay. Well done again Crissy.

Cross Country Report It was a fantastic weekend for Club members from the Nowra Athletics Club, beautiful weather and fabulous results on both days. The Club’s annual long distance event, the Shoalhaven King of the Mountain was run on Sunday. There were over seventy people involved in organising and running the “King” this year, all volunteers and all proud of it. Club members deserve a huge pat on the back! A big thank you goes to everyone who assisted - traffic marshals, aid station attendants, ambulance crews, administration assistants, general helpers and the runners who turned up for the challenge. Well done everyone! Damian Smith was the first male runner home for the Club, finishing fourth overall in a time of 2.16.25. The first female Club member to enter the arena was Alison Mills (nee Bowmaker), who finished with the third fastest female time of 2.31.25. First time runners Darren Morris, Peter Khourey, Samantha Rampant and Annie Schofield enjoyed the mountain race and all hope to return for next year’s challenge. Eric Moeller-Duhme stepped up to another level on Sunday and finished the “King” with a personal best result. Brad Coates is also another good runner who improved on last year’s performance. Running mum and Club member Karan Kenny brought it home for the locals at the Kangaroo Valley Showground. Karan finished the race with the crowd cheering and to the sounds of the Scottish pipe bands playing Waltzing Matilda – magic! Race organisers would also like to thank sponsors and other organisations that supported the 2010 Shoalhaven King of the Mountain. They include Nowra Toyota, Peter Rose Eyecare Plus Optometrist, Kennedy’s Buses, Shoalhaven Spring Water, Shoalhaven Community Transport, Cambewarra Public School, Kangaroo Valley Public School P&C and local members of the SES and NSW Ambulance Service. The Nowra Toyota Winter Pointscore was held at the Longreach course on Saturday. Running families were the order of the day with plenty of action in all the events. In the 2km races young runners featured prominently in the winners circle with Luke Kellett, Aiden Chater and Clayton Gibb taking the top three places in the Division 1 contest. Hunter Lord, Samantha Peace and Courtney Harrison were the best in Division 2 event while Lucy Leung, Meg Morris and Anabelle Dallas were the best in Division 3. It was a great day for our female runners on Saturday, Medium Course runners Joanne Barnes, Kylie Stewart and Elyshia Lucas lead the field home in Division 2 while Deb Clarke, Julie Harrison and Jeni Greenland were too good for the boys in Division 3. Many of the Club’s regular Long Course runners were absent on Saturday, no doubt resting for Sunday’s “King of the Mountain”. This gave other keen runners a great opportunity to pick up some easy points or so they thought. Bill Broughton was first home in the Division 1 race, closely followed by young Brad Sawyers while Catherine Whitfield ran well for third place. In the Division 2 event Alison Coates got away early and made the most of the break, finishing well in front for first place while Jo Warren and Jeni Greenland both performed well for second and third. For anyone interested in reading about the Club’s history and athletic stories from the past, there is a fabulous book (Nowra Athletics Club - Celebrating 50 years of Athletic Endeavour, only $30) for sale in the administration area each week at Cross Country. Next weeks cross country competition will be held at the Timberhills course at Tomerong. To find Timberhills simply travel down the Princes Highway and turn left at Kells Road, Tomerong. Timberhills is approximately 1.5km on the right. Events include a 1km race (for beginners and the very young), 2km, 3km, a medium course event (approx 5.5km) and a long course event (approx11km). Administration starts at 2.00pm and the first race commences at 2.30pm. New members are always welcome, further information can be found on this website or by simply turning up on Saturday. Every day’s a good day for a run – looking forward to seeing you there!

Cross Country at
Timberhills Cool and overcast conditions provided the backdrop for runners at the Timberhills course on Saturday afternoon. Perfect for cross country running and for the staging of the annual “Ron McKinnon Memorial Trophy” race. This year’s nominated event
for the annual award was the Division 1, 3km race. Naturally runners
pulled out all the stops to be first across the line. An added
incentive for the regular runners in Division 1 was the inclusion of
former Club runner Steve McKinnon. |
|
|
As expected the competition was fierce with the front runners heading out at pace while the back markers were hoping for a few lucky breaks to have any chance of reeling them in. The eventual winner was none other than Club speedster Peter Dooley. He produced a season’s best to chase down the field and stretch out the lead over the last five hundred metres to secure a solid win. Well done Peter! In the other events runners were over the moon with the course going in the reverse direction once again. Many of the events finished with competitors sprinting up the straight - all trying to better their previous times. Fantastic work boys and girls! Over the next few weeks athletes from the Nowra Athletics Club will be very busy either training for or competing in some State events and the Shoalhaven King of the Mountain. Next Sunday 4th July the Club will be hosting the 2010 Shoalhaven King of the Mountain. The 32km distance event starts at the Cambewarra Public School 9am on Sunday and finishes at the Kangaroo Valley Showground. Entries are being taken on-line at www.kingofthemountainnowra.org.au, or by contacting Doug Jeffrey on 0407 441 889 or on the day at the Cambewarra Public School prior to the 9am start. In two weeks time teams from the Club will be competing at the NSW Road Relays in Wollongong. If you would like to enter in a |

STATE CROSS COUNTRY A ‘CLASSIC’ DAY Nowra Athletics Club played host to the 2010 Cross Country Classic incorporating the NSW Championships, at the Willandra course on Saturday. The Club results were in a word OUTSTANDING! Right across age groups individuals and teams won medals where never before and even those who did not figure in the medal tally produced personal best performances at Willandra. |

|
A huge Club effort by many many members whether running, lots did, or parking cars, working in the canteen or on the course as a marshall, processing entries and results or pacifying the race director , all deserve medals. The results speak for themselves as we start at the youngest. The under 12 Girls teams again looking cute with Club colours in their hair ribbons started the day with a silver team medal which was on the cards and the B team took the Bronze as well. The strong Kembla Joggers team is going to be hard to beat as the season goes on. The A team members were Layne Jones, Sheneay Edwards, Kiara White and Jade Mustapic. The B team was Emily Cornell, Britney Moon, Chloe Marsh and Tara Mustapic. The under 12 Boys also had the local supporters excited as Jenson Barker won the State bronze medal in a very close finish with four others. He was part of the Club team that won the silver medal behind the Kembla Joggers again. His team mates were Kye Jones, Alistair Clark and Daniel Lucas. The under 14 Boys repeated their Gold medal
effort of the cross country relays with another good win over the
Joggers. Gus Frank was one of the team and he received a Country
Bronze medal as well in a race that had a very strong country
contingent, the city clubs were under pressure in these younger age
groups. The other team members were Jye Edwards, Sam Woods
and Jed Frank. |
|
Did I say Kembla Joggers were the winners? Now to the older age groups and a record effort from an Open age group Club team. The Open Women won the Bronze medal. Never been done before girls YOU BEAUTY!! Elisha Bell who was second Country runner home and 12th overall in the 8 k event teamed with Samantha Rampart, Catherine Whitfield and Sky Martin in this historic celebration of the Club’s 50th Birthday. The men and the women featured in the 35 to 39 age group results. Michele Cumming and Melinda Mustapic were first and second country athletes respectively while the 35 plus team, featuring some older age group members won the team silver medal ahead of the Joggers this time but behind the Hills District. The team was Cristine Suffolk, Karen Jones, Sabina Hamity and Catherine Head. The men also starred with a mighty run from Damian Smith earning him the State silver medal and also first Country. He was 21st overall in the tough 12 k race. Glen Mustapic was country silver medalist and with Damian, Paul Davidson and Scott Johnson took out the team bronze medal. In the 40 to 44 age group Cristine Suffolk won the State Bronze and was first country athlete while Karen Jones took the country Bronze. The 45 to 49 group saw an all country effort with Linda Weatherill and Annette Sampson winning Silver and Bronze behind Sally Musgrove of, you guessed it, Kembla Joggers. These two teamed with Joanne Warren and Helen Lucas to win the team gold while the B team of Alison Havadjia, Sandra Coyte, Debbie Clark and Deborah Sanson won the Bronze. Great work ladies. Not to be outdone the 45 to 49 men produced our first State champion for the day. Bill Stahlhut took the gold and as a consequence the country gold as well while Darren Morris was a country bronze winner. These two with Richard Bosdyk and Peter Heald won a team silver. Back to the ladies and the 50 to 54 age group. Country silver and Bronze were won by Deb Sanson and Bronwyn Jeffrey respectively. Bronwyn had earlier stopped everyone in their tracks with a wonderful rendition of our National Anthem at the start of the days activities. In the 55 to 59 group Kathy Johnston won a country bronze and teamed with Maureen Cox, Eva Moeller- Duhme and Jill Smith for a team Silver medal. Speaking of Jill Smith there is no stopping her. She became our second State Champion for the day in the 60 to 64 group. She was the defending champion and would not be denied though Lyn O’Mara from Bankstown and Maureen Cox of Nowra tried. They took home Silver and Bronze. Jill, Maureen and Eva Moeller-Duhme were the country medalists. Rounding out the day, John Price 55 to 59 , won a country silver medal. Milton Cox was a worthy country silver medalists and Eric Moeller- Duhme won the bronze. Where to now? There is plenty of hot running left. Next Saturday round 12 of the Nowra Toyota winter pointscore will be at Tomerong. Sunday 4th July is King of the Mountain day. Saturday 10th July State Road relays at Wollongong to mention a few.

Willandra Cross Country Classic is on Saturday 19th June, 2010 Numbers were down somewhat at Willandra last Saturday, 12th June, for Round 10 of the Nowra Toyota winter pointcore. Club officials are hoping that many runners are resting up for the State Cross Country Championships to be conducted at the Willandra Classic next Saturday, 19th June. However, by the results from those who were competing it seems that they are indeed getting ready for a big effort at the Willandra next Saturday. Club members should note that events next week start at 12 noon, a lot earlier than usual. Check the time of your event on the timetable. A new chip timing system will be used by Athletics NSW for these championships so it is very important that all runners come well before the scheduled time of their event so that the race chip can be issued and tied to the shoe lace. Runners in Championship events have to be registered and in Club uniform, which includes black pants! Two fun runs will also be conducted on the programme . Check the start time for these on the programme. No timing chips will be used for the fun runs. To stage these Championships many jobs will need to be undertaken by volunteer workers. More helpers are needed and anyone who can help should call Rod Gibb 44 46 0226. Following the good performances by many of our age teams in the recent State Cross Country Relays and with a home track advantage the chance of more success is very real. Though teams are not picked for these Championships, the first four finishers from the Nowra squads in each event are counted for the team medals. Individual and NSW Country medals are also to be awarded on the day. What a day of action is ahead. The racing in Round 10 was great to watch. The long course which was 8km (will be 12km for some next Saturday) had Damian Smith as fastest. Harry Scouller was a shade quicker but was running the 8 km as a trial, he will run 6km in the Championship on Saturday. Peter Khourey had a good win in Division 1 from Patrick Ozolins and Scott Foggo. Fastest lady was Linda Weatherill with 38.16. Nigel Brookes took Division 2 from Geoff Crook and Kevyn Davis, looks like Claude will have a big one next week. The medium distance race, 4k, was a hot one
with the back markers getting well through the field in Division 1.
A 40 seconds spread for the first 6 and some very fast finishing.
Blake Ferrington was first home from Eddie Stewart and the
unstoppable Lou Reali. Paul Davidson was fastest male, Michaela
Quinn fastest lady only 6 seconds behind Paul and could have run him
down if not for the intervention of a small post. Division 3 went to Bill Seary chased home by a bevy of wonderful women, lucky Bill. Eva Moeller-Duhme and Maureen Cox filled second and third spots. The 3k divisions were hotly contested as well. 23 seconds covered the top six in Division 1 won by Jacob Barnes from evergreen Peter Dooley and Olivia Coles. Gus Frank was fastest and got through to 5th from the back mark. Layne Jones was fastest lady. Division 2 went to Briony Toms from Kaitlyn Hush and Andrew Havadjia. Division 3 was all ladies, Jan Reali ahead of Jenny Wood and Lisa Carroll. The 2 k division 1 was won by Tara Mustapic from 2 Chaters, Zoe and Aiden. Kiara White was fastest young lady and Kye Jones the fastest young gentleman. Division 2 was a girls day out with Samantha Peace ,Cathy Barker and Takesa Frank filling the top spots and the same occurred in Division 3 where Meg Morris, Amber Kenny and Annabelle Dallas took the medals. James Phillips, Macauley Dallas and Ruby Davidson were the 1k placegetters. Though numbers were down a little the support of runners in all divisions on all courses was very pleasing. The winter season is now half way through and many more big events are yet to give us plenty of interest. But for now the Country Classic on Saturday is the one.

Longreach Cross Country Nowra Athletics Club runners and their families made their way out to the Longreach course on Saturday afternoon for another round of the Nowra Toyota winter pointscore. Before the racing got under way Club President Kevyn Davis reminded members of the upcoming Willandra Country Classic on Saturday 19th June. The “Classic” is of course, the NSW State Cross Country Championships and has been a regular feature of the Nowra Athletics Club annual sporting agenda for twenty years. Club members are asked to compete in an event, have a go in the Fun Run or assist in one of the work areas. Many hands make light work, so if you can help out for an hour or so Saturday 19th June please speak to a committee member this coming Saturday at Cross Country or call Rod Gibb on 4446 0226. If you wish to run in one of the State events please speak to Club Secretary Jan Gibb as soon as possible so registration requirements can be attended to. A club singlet, worn with black shorts(or similar) is also required to compete. Further information will be available at the administration tent at cross country on Saturday and on the Club website. There were two hundred runners competing in the events at Longreach on Saturday. Every event had plenty of action and every runner made the most of it. In the 3km race, Division 3 runners had a great time in the cooler conditions. Jan Realli was the big improver this week crossing the line in first place just ahead of Sam Morris and Donna Johnson. In the Division 2 contest Hayden strand made a welcome return to the winners circle taking first place, while Gabby Brennan and Briony Munro picked up second and third with some terrific running. Well done! In the Division 1 race Jake Edwards was well clear for first place. Mia Davidson showed great form with the fastest (female) time and finished in second place while Nathan Toms ran strongly for third. The Long and Medium course events were very competitive also which should see the Club do well in the upcoming State Championships. The Club’s Junior runners had plenty of fun in the 1km and 2km events showing their Mums and Dads how to race! On Saturday the Club’s cross country running will be at Willandra, Browns Mountain Road, Cambewarra. Registration and administration will be from around 2.00pm with the first event (1km and 2km) starting at around 2.30pm. With the current weather conditions, please make sure you check the Club website to see if there are any venue changes for Saturday’s cross country running. If the track is too wet it will be moved to the Longreach course! For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 44460226 or simply come along on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing you there! For comprehensive information about the Nowra Athletics Club’s competitions, results and upcoming events visit this website.

State
Cross Country Relays Nowra Athletics Club had a great representation of teams at the NSW State Cross Country Relay Championships at Miranda on the weekend. Several of the Club’s teams won medals while many of the other teams came very close - achieving fantastic personal results in trying conditions. It was a cold and wet day and the running track was a mud runner’s paradise. Despite the adversities, the Nowra team spirit came through. Club team members and their supporters took up vantage points cheering and encouraging our athletes on to great things. Two gold, silver and two bronze medals were won and a lot of mud was accumulated on our striking gold, black and white running gear. Every team succeeded in giving their best effort whether they were medal winners or not – they all did us proud! For the fashion conscious, our young ladies took out the “cutest” prize with their black, gold and white hair ribbons while others with various coloured pants (they are supposed to be black) added to the spectacle. The announcer commented on the great day Nowra was having and as he did last year, reckoning it was a black and gold invasion. The under 14 boys were clear winners of their event even though the finish was a very close affair with the Kembla Joggers under 12 team. The boys put in a great mud running performance to stay near the front of the field for all four laps. The gold medallists were Jed Frank, Angus Pryde, Jye Edwards, Zach Havadjia. Likewise the under16 girls led off with a very fast first 3k lap from Michaela Quinn, staying in front she defied any to overtake. The other gold medallists in the team were Tori Jones, Rose Vucic and Casey Jones. Our Silver medal winning under 12 girls team of Shenay Edwards, Jade Mustapic, Layne Jones and Clare Dobson raced with hair ribbons flying, hung on to their top two position with great determination throughout the event. Fantastic effort girls! Our male bronze medal team were the under 18 boys who were always in the mix and in the top group for the whole race. Team members Harris Scouller, Mitch Brown, Bradley Sawyers and Jyle Smith were well deserved medal winners. The 45 plus ladies were pleasantly surprised with their bronze medal mainly because there were several age groups in the event and with the mud and just survival on their mind it was hard to think of anything else. Well done Maxine Gernyi, Annette Sampson, Helen Lucas and Linda Wetherill. The next State event will be on home soil on June 19th when the NSW Cross Country Championships will be conducted at Willandra. See the Patrons Article for photos and comments. Our regular cross country event the Nowra Toyota Winter pointscore was held at the beautiful Timberhills Course at McKinnon’s Farm Tomerong on Saturday. There was plenty of action in every event with some great running from many of the Club’s running families. An overcast day and beautifully prepared courses all made for a splendid afternoons racing. The big surprise for everyone on Saturday was that all the events were run in the reverse direction. The 1km, 2km and 3km runners had no problems and all finished as expected. The Medium and Long course runners however were all a bit lost at the end. There seemed to be no hills and everyone finished the races one, two or three minutes faster than a normal Timberhills effort! Another example of mind over matter, perhaps? This Saturday’s Cross Country running will be held at the Longreach Course, Longreach Road, Longreach. Registration and administration will be from around 2.00pm with the first event (1km and 2km) starting at around 2.30pm. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing you there! Cross Country – 50th
Anniversary Nowra Athletics Club members and their families had a fantastic afternoon at the Club’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations at Willandra on Saturday. Congratulations, Nowra Athletics Club! A huge contingent of Kembla Joggers members made the trip down from Wollongong to be part of the celebrations and to kick off the first leg of the interclub challenge series for the “The McCaffrey Challenge” shield. |

The 1km and 2km races saw a sea of 1 metre high competitors(and the odd helper) winding their way around the picture perfect Willandra cross country courses. It was a fantastic sight and a brilliant way to start the Club’s 50th birthday. Competition was fierce at the front in the 4km(medium) and 8km(long) events while the majority of the field did their best and made sure they enjoyed every step. Nowra runners seemed to be ahead in the points table in the shorter event while Kembla Joggers runners edged a little in front in the 8km race. The return leg of the “Challenge” takes place on Saturday 21st August at Kembla Joggers brand new home ground at West Dapto. Keep your calendar clear for that day; it will no doubt be an afternoon to remember! Following the racing on Saturday, Nowra Athletics Club and Kembla Joggers members stayed for the official cutting of the cake ceremony. Several of the Club’s members, who all had birthdays in the previous seven days, stood by as former Club President Claude Yarnold (1971-1974), assisted by birthday girl Julie Harrison, made the incision. |

Our regular cross country event the Nowra Toyota Winter pointscore will be held at the Timberhills Course at McKinnon’s Farm, Kell’s Road, Tomerong this Saturday. To find Timberhills, simply drive South down the Princes Hwy and look for a right hand turn (Kell’s Road) marked with X-Country signs on the Tomerong by-pass. Travel up Kell’s Road for about 1.5km till you reach Timberhills on the right hand side. Registration and administration will be from around 2.00pm with the first event (1km and 2km) starting at around 2.30pm. Cross Country –
Longreach Happy cross country runners and their families enjoyed a beautiful day and the challenging Longreach courses on Saturday afternoon. With several school cross country carnivals scheduled in the coming week it was another opportunity for the younger members of the club to sharpen up their skills before competing. All the shorter distance events had plenty of starters, keen and rearing to go. In the 1km event Callum Lowbridge, Macauley Dallas and James Phillips broke away from the bunch early and poured on the pace over the last few hundred metres to finish well in front. In the 2km event Division 3 runners Lucy Leung, Erin Martin and Alison Taylor all ran a great race and crossed the line first for maximum points. Division 1 and Division 2 winners included Vicki Lord, Ryan Lowbridge, Leah Dobson, Ella Munro, Kalvin Cordes and Alex Cornell. Well done! In the 3km race a determined Taylah Henning led the other runners down the straight to claim victory in Division 1, while Clare Dobson and Daniel Lucas also ran well for second and third. In Division 2, Kim Dobson and Briony Toms were well deserved winners in their race while Andrew Havadjia claimed third with a final lunge for the line. Jack Tuckerman, Toni Mudditt and Dominic Frawley were the best in Division 3. In the Medium event, back markers Michaela Quinn, Harry Scouller and Paul Davidson threaded their way through the field to post the fastest times. Michaela claimed first place while new runners with the Club, Robert Somerville and Joel Lord, picked up second and third in Division1. Casey Jones and Angela Edwards were the best in Division 2 - finishing just ahead of a flying John Price! Unfortunately, a couple of super keen runners had a tumble whilst racing in the Medium Course event. A big thank you goes to all those who stopped and gave assistance - well done gang! Catherine Whitfield and Kevyn Davis were the best of a good bunch in the Long course event on Saturday. Other runners showing plenty of grit included Scott Foggo, Bill Stahlhut, Richard Bosdyk, Cathy Head and Chris Stubbs. By all accounts - another great race! Don’t forget this weekend the Club will be hosting the McCaffrey Challenge at Willandra. All the regular events (1, 2, 3km, Medium and Long) will be run as usual. Please try to get there a little early as events will run strictly to time. Following the racing a “cutting of the cake” ceremony will take place to mark the Club’s 50th anniversary. Everyone is invited, so please stay for the afternoon tea and enjoy the festivities. On Saturday the Club’s cross country running will be at Willandra, Browns Mountain Road, Cambewarra. Registration and administration will be from around 2.00pm with the first event (1km and 2km) starting at around 2.30pm. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 44460226 or simply come along on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing you there! As you’d expect with many recent successes behind them, the Club’s talented brigade shot to the front early in their events and finished way out in front. Harry Scouller and Micheala Quinn were the best in the Medium course event, while Alex Pitkethly had a fantastic race in the Long course. Great running gang! There were plenty of other athletes who performed brilliantly on Saturday as well. The scratch events must have brought out the best in nearly everyone. The racing and corrected times make for very interesting reading – further information see the results section. It all fairs well for the interclub McCaffrey Challenge in a fortnights time. Cross Country Brilliant sunshine and cloudless skies greeted an enormous crowd of runners at the Nowra Athletics Club’s Cross Country Competition at Willandra (Tapitalee) on Saturday afternoon. Younger runners made the most of the two shorter races (1km and 2km), while the more experienced took advantage of the conditions and the beautiful scenery in the 3km, 4km and 8km events. |

Michaela Quinn showed her
talent once again by finishing the State Championship race way ahead
of the rest to take first place in the U/16 Women’s category. Junior
Men’s Runner Harry Scouller, competing well above his age in the
U/18 race also ran with distinction, finishing in 10th
place. Fantastic effort, congratulations! In athletics and many other sports too, it’s not the results that count so much its how you play the game. Energy in always equals energy out. Three of the Club’s long serving members Peter Dooley, Andrew Johnstone and Graham Pepper were recognised at the recent AGM with Life Memberships for their outstanding contribution to the Club. All three have put in enormous amounts of energy over the years – well done! |

Cross Country Report The 50th Annual General Meeting and Presentation Night for the Nowra Athletics Club will be conducted next Saturday evening 7.30pm at North Nowra Public School. The Club’s annual report will be presented, office bearers for the 2010/2011 season will be elected and the meeting will be followed by the presentation of trophies for the 2009/2010 season. This covers the cross country and track and field season. Supper follows the presentation and all are welcome. Those attending are requested to bring a plate of supper to share. A big roll up of runners was the feature of Round 2 of the Nowra Toyota Winter Pointscore conducted for the first time this season at Timberhills Tomerong. Many new runners and ‘old hands’ coming for their first run of the winter swelled numbers to over 220 and as a result some of the administration suffered. Club members are reminded that it is good to come earlier than the first race starting time of 2.30pm. Much has to be done with providing new folks with information, filling in forms, checking handicaps etc and all should note that administration time will end at 2.15pm. Be early!! New members are welcome and any who wish to try it and see are also welcome. The results show the various divisions that have been made up for the various distances run and because of the big numbers 3 divisions are necessary. Great Scott what a race!! The long course that is with two Scotts battling it out on Timberhills’ hills. With the course in great condition the pace was on and Scott Foggo was first home in Division 1 Scott Martin next and Patrick Ozolins in the ‘bronze’ position. After the first two who got away a bit the others finished in a line a few seconds apart. Karen Jones was first lady home and was fastest as well while Damien Smith was fastest of the men. Division 2 was dominated by the ladies, Karen Kenny was well clear of Alison Strand, Richard Bosdyk in third spot. The Medium distance needed three divisions such was the keenness of the runners. Division 1 went to Harris Scouller who got right through the field from the back mark and got fastest time as well, Matt Brennan was next ahead of Robert Somerville. Fastest lady was Cristine Suffolk. Division 2 placegetters were Doug Jeffrey, Casey Jones (without the Locomotive) and young Zac Havadjia. The racing was fairly close and a line up of finishers went right through to Division 3 which was taken out by Jack Kenny followed by Michele Smith and Dian Ferrington. Great running here. Not to be outdone for enthusiasm the 3 and 2k runs also featured three divisions. In the 3k Division 1 Scott Johnson, Seamus Frawley and Caitlin Pummeroy were the medallists, Sharna Boughton was fastest lady and Jye Edwards the fastest lad. Division 2 was taken out by Mark Jones ahead of Andrew Havadjia and Cameron Musgrove.Division3 went to Ava Jeffrey from Eddie Oliver. The 2k races were dominated by the young ladies. Division 1 was won by Sophie Rose Phillips from Tara Mustapic and Ella Pratt. Shenay Edwards was the fastest lady while Kye Jones was fastest boy. Division 2 went to Leanne Marsh then Courtney Harrison and Kyla Davidson. Division 3 Cathy baker finished ahead of Ella Pernice and Alison Taylor. It was certainly a girls day out in the 2k. The 1 k run is turning out to be quite popular for those small people and some not that small who may work their way up to a longer distance or just enjoy the feel of running over grassy tracks. The top placegetters were Olivia Fletcher, Callum Lowbridge and James Phillips. They may have been a bit bigger than the little people at the other end of field. Well run to Lila Pratt, Kate Leung and Harriet Urquhart. New runners are always welcome contact Jan Gibb 44460226 for further information. Next Saturday we run at Longreach Road. Administration from 1.30 to 2.15pm. Then in the evening the AGM and Presentation Night at North Nowra Public School.

Cross Country Report Warm weather at the Willandra course on Saturday afternoon saw many a runner take advantage of the drink stations and the odd slice of shade as they made their way around the course in Round 2 of the Nowra Toyota Winter cross country pointscore. Saturday’s events were what we call a “Scratch Start”- where every runner starts at the same time (off go). Later, handicaps are added and points awarded to each runner who finishes. |
|
|
Young runners Peter Khourey and Darren Morris stretching out in the 1km race before the start of the Long Course event at Willandra on Saturday. |
A full table of results is available on this website. Click Current Results on the Home Page. The most popular events of the day were the (new) 1km, 2km and 3km events – all three races saw plenty of entrants. The new 1km race is designed for the very young runners who like to run with Mum and Dad or some one else willing to hold a hand. Each week the 1km will be the first race to start and finish, which will give all the carers an opportunity to run in another event if they wish. There were plenty of runners in the medium and long course events despite the very warm conditions. If Saturdays racing is any indication, this year’s competition should be another fantastic season for the Club. Club officials look forward
to another successful and enjoyable Cross Country season and urge
all members and their families to enjoy the courses, events and the
friendly people from the Nowra Athletics Club. |
|
The AGM and Presentation evening always provides plenty of entertainment and laughs and this year will be better than ever. So make sure you come along and support your local athletes. The other big news for 2010 is that the Nowra Athletics Club is 50 years old! To celebrate, the Club will have a number of activities leading up to Saturday 22nd May where an inter Club challenge event will take place at Willandra. Later in the evening the Club will be hosting a 50th Celebration Dinner at the Bomaderry Bowling Club. Tickets for the 50th Anniversary dinner are available on-line at the Club’s website (click To Information on the Notice Board on the Home Page.), Sportspower Nowra and the Bomaderry Bowling Club. Saturday’s Cross Country running will be held at the Timberhills Course at McKinnon’s Farm, Kell’s Road, Tomerong. Registration and administration will be from around 1.30pm with the first event (1km) starting at around 2.30pm. New runners or members should ensure that any registration or administration requirements are attended to before 2.15pm. For additional enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Saturday. Cross Country Report The
Nowra Toyota winter pointscore season got underway last Saturday
(3-4-10) in true winter conditions. It was pleasing to club officials to meet many new folks and to see many old faces from last season and even some from many seasons past. The 2, 3, 4, and 8 km races were conducted as scratch races for trial purposes and members are reminded that they should choose, without delay, which distance they wish to compete in because after next Saturday the handicapper will be making up various divisions for the particular distances run. Pre run administration is conducted between 1.30 and 2.15pm racing gets underway at 2.30pm. Cross Country running is open to anyone interested in keeping fit. Club membership is open to all age groups and all abilities. Enquiries can be made to the Club Secretary, Jan Gibb on 44460226.
