The Club’s Summer Road Run Competition had its final run on Saturday afternoon at Bamarang and Burrier. Competitors enjoyed the beautiful scenery in the company of friends whilst taking part in a very demanding Half Marathon Race.

The event was a team’s relay race, although several of the teams had only one runner: no one found the event easy going. None the less, it was a great race - there was action a plenty, excitement, summer heat, magnificent river views, hills and more hills and more hills (thanks for that Kev).

There was celebration at the finish line as all the teams crossed the tape within in few minutes of each other - amazing considering the course and the conditions. This years winner was none other than Chocolate Rockets (AKA Team Gernyi + one) well deserved and well run.

There will now be a few weeks break before the Club’s next competition which starts on Saturday 3rd of April. This of course will be the Nowra Athletics Club’s Cross Country Competition, which will feature the Nowra Toyota Winter Pointscore.

The first day of competition and registration will be at Willandra, Brown’s Mountain Road, Cambewarra (Easter Saturday).

In another record breaking performance, sprinting sensation Scott Richardson reset the Club Record in the Open Men’s 100m race. The new time of 10.7 seconds will be hard to beat on the Club’s grass track.

Darlene Musgrove had a great run in the Women’s 1500m event finishing in third place behind Linda Weatherill and Michaela Quinn. In the Men’s race Harry Scouller lead the field home while Paul Davidson and Perry Strand were next to finish.

Summer Athletics Report
24th February, 2010

Summer Athletics on Wednesday evening saw the finals of the Club’s 100m Handicap. One of the Club’s most favoured events, the 100m handicap has given athletes of various ages and abilities the opportunity to compete in a race where they normally wouldn’t meet.

The 2010 Junior Handicap Championship race was won by Briel Musgrove while the Seniors race was won by David Webb. Both races had very close finishes, the top three or four positions were only decided by millimetres at the winners post.

Another of the Club’s favoured handicap events - the Senior and Junior 800m races, will be on this evenings programme. Make sure you arrive early as this popular event is scheduled as the first race of the night.

As with any athletic event there’s a start but there’s also a finish. Summer Athletics for the 2009/2010 season will have its final night of competition on Wednesday 10th of March.

The Club’s Summer Road run competition was held at the Nowra Showground course on Friday evening. And what an evening it was – great conditions and motivated runners!

Despite being punished by the handicapper after last week’s performance, Sky Martin did it again for the second week in a row. Sky produced the goods when it counted most, reeling in the front runners early and then continued on at pace ensuring victory again.

NOWRA ATHLETICS CLUB REPORT

17th February, 2010 - Rod Gibb

Pointscore events were conducted  last week with no problems following periods of rain but a low turn out of athletes was disappointing.

Club members are reminded that they should check the website or phone the secretary if in doubt.

Doubt could very well be the word tonight following the drenching the district has received and the above reminder should be acted upon.

In contrast to the very wet weekend experienced at home some club members experienced fine weather in Sydney at the Athletics NSW Junior and Youth Championships.

Michaela Quinn continued her good form and finished second in the under 16 1500 and third in the 3000 metres.

Lacey Bruce was third in the under 16 Triple Jump and qualified for the final in the 90 metres hurdles where she placed fourth.

Tim Cooper managed second in the under 18 Javelin with another 56 metres throw, Tim has already qualified for the National Championships.

Harry Scouller experienced huge fields in the under 16, 800 and 1500 metres and managed 8th in the 800 final  which had 25 starters contesting thee heats.

Samantha Peace in her first year in under 14 group and with a heavier shot, found it tough going but will certainly benefit from the experience.

Pointscore tonight if the weather permits and the track is dry will feature series 3 events.

The Club’s Summer Road run competition was held at the Vincentia course on Friday evening – the rain held out and gave everyone the opportunity to improve their rankings on the points table.

The Clubs female runners made the most of the conditions on Friday taking the top three places. Sky Martin was the first runner home with a well deserved win. A short time later Di Court held out for second place just ahead of new Club runner Katherine Whitfield.

Peter Khourey and Patrick Ozolins both had impressive runs and no doubt will feature strongly in the remaining weeks of the competition.

Attention runners! There has been a number of changes to the Summer Road Runs programme. The competition final will know be held on Saturday 6th of March. The final event will be a handicapped Half Marathon Relay race – entry forms need to be submitted no later than this coming weekend.

If you don’t have a team – don’t worry we’ll make one up for you, just put your entry form in!

By the way, you don’t have to run the whole 21km – it’s a relay event – you only need to run one leg or run on one leg (whatever takes your fancy).

Summer Athletics Report
10th February, 2010

The summer pointscore  re-commenced  last Wednesday following the School holidays and though rain threatened it was only in the last event that runners had rain to contend with.

Good performances were recorded all round and in the two handicap events, 600metres and 100 metres this was very noticeable.

The handicaps are calculated on the best time for the particular distance recorded by runners.

In the 600 metres many ran up to expectations and others made great improvements.

Division 1 went to Andrew Havadjia who bettered his best time by 15 seconds while Murray Parnell, Patrick Ozolins, Perry Strand and Scott Martin were spot on their best times. Great running and great handicapping.

Division 2 featured another great improvement  from Sky Martin ,17.5 seconds better than her best time, great work Sky! The first 6 runners all bettered their best times in this race, it seems handicaps bring out the best.

Division 3 continued the trend. Alistair Clark was 15 seconds faster followed by Luke Huard, Ella Pratt, Sam Baxter and Angus Pryde who were faster or spot on their best times.

The 100 metres handicaps  also featured some great running . The first four in each heat of the various divisions will be in semi finals tonight, weather permitting, so check the results.

With an eye on the weather, events for second series of the pointscore will be conducted tonight. 1k, 3or 5k, 50m and 150m  plus all the throws and long and high jump are on the programme. All that is needed is a dry track and plenty of officials.

Summer Athletics Report
3rd February, 2010

Nowra Athletics Club members had a fantastic evening of competition at Summer Athletics on Wednesday. The 100 metre handicap races and 1000 metre handicap event kept everyone focussed on performing at their best.

As usual both handicap races were well attended and the results table shows a few unexpected names in the top positions. Well done to everyone who entered and had a go!

Following on from last week’s handicap races - tonight will see more 100m elimination heats and if time permits, finals in the various divisions.

Competition in the field events has never been better with many of the Club’s newer families and athletes improving their Javelin, Discus and Shot Put throwing marks week after week. Some of the Club’s more experienced athletes have enjoyed assisting and encouraging where they can. Great effort team!

Talking of team players one of the Club’s best Peter Dooley, received an award for  his achievements in Athletics, at the Australia Day Awards Ceremony held last week.

Congratulations, fantastic work Peter and well deserved.

Over the last couple of seasons at Summer Athletics many new members have joined the Club and participated in a sport they never thought possible for them. A crazy idea really, when you consider all you need is two arms, legs (sometimes not even those) and a positive attitude.

If you’ve never tried athletics as a sport why not give it a go. History is made by those who show up.

The Summer Road run competition was held at Vincentia on Friday. A large group of runners were in attendance to take part in a Pairs handicap race and to celebrate Eva Moeller-Duhme’s 60th birthday.

In the race Bronwyn Jeffrey cut the tape for first place, but had an anxious wait for the final result. Meanwhile Laura Daley chased hard and finished in second place, a short time later running mate Darren Morris came in to seal the Pairs victory for both.

Once everyone had caught their breath it was time to enjoy the company of friends and join in the party. Revellers had plenty of laughs especially with the question and answer session about Eva and all things athletic.

The magnificent birthday cake (thanks Sky) was set alight, accompanied by a harmonious happy birthday recital and thunderous applause. Congratulations Eva!

This weeks’ Road Run competition will be at the Cambewarra course on Friday evening commencing at 6.30pm. Runners should gather at the Cambewarra School of Arts Hall at around 6.15pm.

Nowra Athletics Club members made the most of the recent NSW Country Championships held at the Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre, Wollongong. Athletes from the Club showed unrivalled determination and outright skill throughout the two day Championship carnival.

Club members who acted as officials and/or helpers combined brilliantly with other Athletic Club representatives to make sure the weekend was a resounding success.

There were many medal winning performances, some established Championship records or Australian Qualifying distances while others achieved better than expected PB’s. The best of the weekend was the way Club Members rallied and cheered when a Nowra athlete was out there doing their best. Fantastic!

Fresh from his recent win in the Kembla Joggers Half Marathon, Damian Smith overcame a back marker starting position to finish first in the handicap section. Next home were half marathon running mates Perry Strand and Jon Schol – well done boys.

Summer Athletics Report
9th December, 2009

With cooler conditions at Summer Athletics many of the Club’s regular athletes and athletic families decided to stay home on Wednesday evening. Despite the lower numbers competition was still very strong in all events.

A combined 3000m and 5000m race, staged as the last event, saw some of the clubs fastest young runners make the most of the near perfect conditions. Jake Ring and Alex Pitkethly stayed shoulder to shoulder for most of the race and kept each other company as they past the post each time. It was only in the last 500m that Jake managed to break clear finishing with a new Club record – well done!

Junior athletes Sebastian Webb, Brennan Tipping, Cameron Musgrove and Brodie Nielsen in a 60m sprint event at Summer Athletics

While Alex continued on to complete the 5000m event in a more than respectable time - not too far from the current record.

In the same event Cristine Suffolk finished well ahead as the first female athlete across the line in the 5000m. Never say die distance runners Kevyn Davis and Paul Davidson made a hard job look easy supporting some of the Club’s less experienced runners as they went.

Junior runners Angus Pryde and Zac Havadjia gave the older blokes plenty to think about as they completed the seven and a half lap, 3000m event – both finishing with a flat out sprint over the last 100.

While we’re on the subject of Junior athletes in the Club, four of our best; Lacey Bruce, Teila Bruce, Michaela Quinn and Harry Scouller were selected to represent the NSW State team at the Australian All Schools Championship in Hobart, Tasmania.

Early reports are that all four have competed with distinction in the events they have participated in so far. Further results and more detailed information about their magnificent performances will come to light in the coming week.

Summer Athletics this evening will feature a combined 2000m and 3000m event to accommodate some of the Club’s middle distance runner’s ambitions and training regimes.

Any athletes wishing to see some specialised events or particular races included in the programme, over the next two weeks of competition, should contact Club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226.

Other events on the card this week include 80m, 200m and 800m, shuttle relay and some hurdle events and field events - shot put, discus, long jump and triple jump.

Don’t forget the Club’s main representative championship, the NSW Country Championships, will be held in Wollongong on the 16th and 17th January, 2010. Any athlete or athletic family wishing to enter should have their registration forms back to Jan Gibb or a committee member on or before (our last competition night for 2009) Wednesday, 16th December.

Summer Athletics Report
2nd December, 2009

News from the 2009/10 Summer Athletics competition this week is once again about record breaking performances and sensational results.

A great turnout of competitors and plenty of well run events ensured another fantastic evening for athletes in all age categories from the Nowra Athletics Club.

Local middle distance sensation Michaela Quinn smashed a long held record in the 1500m event on Wednesday. In fact 23 seconds better than the previous best mark which was set in 1986(Lisa Whitby)!

In the same event Harry Scouller continued with his very successful season, narrowly missing the Club 1500m 14/15yrs Boys record (Julien Wicks, 1993).

Other record breakers for the evening included veteran racer Bernie Condon who laced up different boots to throw a record setting put in the Men’s 70yr+ Shot Put. A short time later his jumps in the Long Jump created new records as well.

Maxine Gernyi(600m), Kevyn Davis(1500m) and Club Patron Rod Gibb (Javelin) have for the third consecutive week set new records – well done!

Kristi-Lee Taylor was in fine form at Summer Athletics winning both the 60m and 100m Women’s. Running mates Sarah de Vries and Lacey Bruce ran well for the minor

placings in both events. The sprinting trio later competed in the family favourite, the handicapped mixed relay, ably supporting the club’s younger sprinters. Great effort!

Girls in the Nowra Athletics Club are not only fast but very strong too. In the Women’s field events young competitors Kyra Hush, Katie Sayer and Madeleine Jeffrey dominated the proceedings. The three Junior girls consistently threw the furthest in both the Shot Put and Javelin events.

In other athletics news Club Female sprinter Lynda Douglass came home from a recent NSW Masters Relay Competition with two Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

It all looks pretty good for the Club especially with the NSW Country Championships coming up in Wollongong on the 16th and 17th of January. Any athletes and/or their families wishing to compete should hand in their registration forms to Club Secretary Jan Gibb as soon as possible.

Summer Athletics Report
25th November, 2009

With the 2009/10 Summer Athletics competition well under way athletes from the Nowra Athletics Club look set for a fabulous season of sensational performances.

Many of the Club’s athletes have chalked up personal bests, club records and milestones they should remember long into the future. Well done gang - congratulations on a fantastic start!

Seven new Club records were set on Wednesday evening – arguably the best on the night came in the Men’s Triple Jump. Veteran athlete David Hutchison, returning from injury and only participating in a few events, jumped 10.89m to set a new Club record in the Men’s 40-49yr category. The previous best was set in 1988 by local athletic identity Patrick Greene.

At the lower end of the age spectrum, young Annette Peace threw over 20 metres in the 9yr Girls discus event to make her mark in the record books. Well done!

Harry Scouller, looking relaxed and fit, produced a first class result against the Club’s best on Wednesday to win the Men’s 2000m event. It was a great race to watch - Harry got to the front early, then was pushed and chased by Alex Pitkethly, eventually finishing half a lap ahead!

Club veterans Kevyn Davis(2000m), Maxine Gernyi(2000m) and Rod Gibb (Shot & Discus) set Club records again  - it never gets boring, great effort!

Another highlight of the evening came in the Men’s 800 and 2000m races where Perry Strand and Paul Davidson traded places for 1st and 2nd (40-49Yr).

Some good performances across several events came from athletes Melinda Mustapic, Sarah de Vries, Kristi-Lee Taylor, Lacey Bruce and Lily Fitzpatrick. Well done girls – keep them coming.

Summer Athletics Report
18th November, 2009

It’s absolutely amazing, week in week out athletes from the Nowra Athletics Club continue to break longstanding club records.

One of last Wednesday’s triumphs came from local sprinting sensation Scott Richardson. In blistering form at the moment, Scott smashed the Club’s 100m Open Men’s record in a time of 10.90 seconds. The previous record of 11.40 seconds was set by Allan Ozolins at the peak of his career, way back in 1989.

Young Tim Cooper kept the Club records’ tumbling with a series of outstanding throws in the Junior Men’s 16/17yrs Javelin. His best on the night was an astounding 51.44m, almost four metres further than the old record set 22 years ago!

Club President Kevyn Davis, never one to stand idle for too long, lowered his 3000m Club record with a great run. In the same event, Peter Dooley bettered his 3000m age record (set in the 07/08 season). Earlier in the night, during a warm up race, he lowered his 1000m record as well.

Maxine Gernyi only knows one speed during any race and loves to show it too. On Wednesday she bettered her 50, 150 and 400 age records again - in a dazzling display of sprinting prowess.

Michaela Quinn in her business-like racing manner, made the most of the perfect conditions in the 1000m event. A well heeled field of runners set the pace for her to push past her previous mark, bettering the Club record in the process.

Not everyone was a record breaker at Summer Athletics last week, however several of the club’s athletes put in fantastic performances well worth a mention.

Yolanda Van Arkel ran a brilliant 400m race; finishing the demanding event in style, she had the crowd on their feet – congratulations!

Another great race on Wednesday was in the Veteran Men’s 150m event, where Andrew Havadja just managed to hold out David Webb to cross the line first - by a whisker.

Athletes Perry Strand, Sarah De Vires, Geoff Crook and Tom de Souza all showed skill, determination and plenty of guts in events right across the board – well done!

Talking of the well done (but not overcooked), Rod Gibb couldn’t contain himself on Wednesday and entered the Men’s Discus event. Showing the younger blokes how it’s done - Rod gave them all a throwing lesson with a near perfect display, broke a Club record and probably a hamstring!!!

In other athletic news the NSW Country Championships are coming up in January at Wollongong on the 16th and 17th. Any interested athletes and/or their families should contact Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 as soon as possible so that registration and entry arrangements can be made.

As usual Summer Athletics will be held at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, Nowra (behind Shoalhaven High School) this Wednesday 18th November. Registration and announcements will be from 5.45pm with competition commencing at 6.00pm sharp.

New members are always welcome at the Nowra Athletics Club. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Summer Athletics Report
11th November,2009

Drizzling rain did not stop events last Wednesday for Nowra Athletics club summer pointscore Round 7, it did however reduce numbers significantly.

It also did not stop a record performance with another 20 year old middle distance record going to Alex Pitkethly who bettered Dean Seager’s 1500 metres mark set in 1989. Alex led all the way to shave a second off the record.

More records were set in the wet by masters age group athletes and some records which were missed from round 6 are now noted.

Club President Kevyn Davis now in the 60 plus group has accounted for the 1500, 2k and 3k records. Bill Seary the 70 plus 600 and 800 records.

The ladies too got into the act. Maxine Gernyi recently confessed she has had a birthday and as such is now the 50 to 59 group record holder for 200, 600, 800 and 2k.

Young Samantha Peace threw the discus 26.78 metres for the 11 years record and that throw was a beauty.

The NSW All Schools championships in Sydney last weekend attracted a group of Club athletes either trying to qualify or having a hit out for the Australian championships to be conducted in Hobart in early December.

One gold, two bronze medals and some qualifiers was the result. The gold medal went to Tim Cooper from Ulladulla who put in a 54.54  throw in the 16 years Javelin. This was not quite a qualifier and Tim now has to wait for someone to decide if the State champion should represent his state at the National Championships.

Michaela Quinn has already qualified for the Nationals but had a good hard run in the 14 years 3k to be awarded the Bronze.

Harry Schouler also got the bronze in the 15 years 3k and qualified. He was a close fourth in the 800 as well.

Teila Bruce too managed a fourth in the 16 years 400 hurdles but more pleasing was her time which was a qualifier. Younger sister Lacey has already qualified for the triple jump.

Well done to this squad and their coaches for a high achieving weekend.

Tonight Round 8 of the summer continues with plenty on the track from 50metres to 3k and all the field events. 6pm the starting, time be early.

Nowra Athletics Club Report
1st November, 2009

RECORDS CONTINUE TO TUMBLE

High quality performances were a feature of Round 6 of Nowra Athletics Club summer pointscore last Wednesday and the list of records was most impressive.

Continuing her tremendous recent form Michaela Quinn blew away the under 16yrs  2km record. Her time of 6 min. 42 seconds bettered the record  by  50 seconds or so. This record has stood for 20 years.

Alex Pitkethly lowered his own 2km record as well and while on the 2km event it was noted that the young ladies put in some creditable efforts.

Bridget Kellett was one lass who stood out while Jade Mustapic after a busy day competing in Sydney shrugged of any tiredness and ran a great 2k.

Two more record breakers and setters were Peter Dooley, also in great form of late, who beat his own 800 metres record for the 50 to 59 group and  established a new record in the 2km. Simon Hale as predicted, bettered his Shot put  record. This will not be the last time we see these records get a shake up.

In the short sprints Scott Richardson went so fast over 80 metres his time went off the pointscore scale.

Records will be established for this short sprint and Matt Young and Tom de Sousa will feature in their particular age groups as will Scott.

Club members we know about and we may have missed some, have been active elsewhere in competition.

Sebastion Webb, Angus Clark, Angus Pryde, Jade Mustapic and Madeleine Jeffrey have made it to State level and have represented their school at the Primary Scools State carnival. Well done to these and all who have reached the State level.

A reminder for the sprinters regarding the Bernie Regan Memorial handicap next Sunday at the Bernie Regan Memorial Sports complex  at North Nowra.

Entries have been slow and a little disappointing. It is not too late!!  Contact Jan Gibb 44460226 to enter and receive details of heats, semis and finals. The event is for High school age up, male and female. The Club is organizing this event as part of 25th Anniversary celebrations of the Bernie Regan Memorial Trust. We need the support of Officials as well as sprinters!

Round 7 of the summer pointscore tonight will feature all the throws, high and long jump 60, 100, 600 and 1500 on the track and medley relays. Be early starting time is 6pm.  The results for the last competition are on this website.

Summer Athletics Report
28th October, 2009

Overcast and slightly cool conditions laid the foundations for some sizzling performances by many of the Club’s athletes on Wednesday evening.

Back after several years away in Sydney, club member Scott Richardson stole the show in the Open Men’s sprint events winning both the 50 and 150 metre events in record time.

Scott’s new 50 metre record smashed the old Club record, set way back in 1989 whilst the closest time to his new 150 metre record from Wednesday, was set 17 years ago!

A fantastic performance by any measure, some of the Club’s other sprinting records look set for a big shake up!

Female running sensation Michaela Quinn showed that she was in fine form at Summer Athletics with a brilliant performance in the Women’s 1000m event. Spectator’s trackside on Wednesday evening could tell right from the start that a new Club record was on the cards.

Michaela powered through the race looking fresh and focussed throughout, finishing the event in 3.08.3 to set a new Club record.

The ever competitive Club athlete Peter Dooley, chased after the young blokes on Wednesday keeping them honest whilst managing to shave some time off his 1000m 50/59yrs Club record. Well done!

Alex Pitkethly, never one to be left out, made sure his name got another mention in the Club record books with a hard fought win in the Men’s 3000m event. His new Club record surpassed running mate Jake Ring’s previous best in the Men’s U/20 category.

At tonight’s meet, the Club will be hosting a 90m Hurdle event.  If anyone is interested in competing in a longer hurdle event, please make your request known to Jan Gibb or any other Club Official before the start of events.

In other athletic news, 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Bernie Regan Memorial Sporting Trust. The Nowra Athletics Club in conjunction with the Bernie Reagan Memorial Sporting Trust is organising a100m Handicap Event (open to all comers - high school age up) for the Trust's Fun Day on Sunday 8th November at the Bernie Reagan Sports Oval, West Cambewarra Road, North Nowra.  Any interested runners should contact Club Secretary Jan Gibb (4460 226) to register for one of the heats.

Nowra Athletic Club Report
for 21st October, 2009

Cold and windy conditions greeted Nowra Athletics Club members for ‘summer’ pointscore events last Wednesday but the competition was hot through all grades.

Some good throwing was noted in the younger grades, girls and boys both recording good efforts.

Amy Thompson, Madison Hale and Gabby  Brennan using the heavier weight shot stood out while the lighter weight stars were Olivia Hale , Jade Mustapic and Leonie Foggo.

Liam Dooley and Zachary Havadjia managed some putts over seven metres in the boys grades.

In the discus Liam again and Angus Clark put in some good throws.

The older folks also had some notable throws as well. Simon Hale put in some good putts with the shot to record 10.5 metres. He managed even further later while ‘warming down’ and the senior record may soon be under threat.

Not to be outdone the young ladies did well with the discus, Emily Warden, Lacy Bruce and Emily Reichler being the best on the night.

In case readers wonder if any running took place, it sure did and you all ran very well.
While on the subject of running ---

Nowra athletes great running at the WORLD MASTERS in SYDNEY

A dedicated group of Club members have spent a busy week in Sydney at the World Masters Championships at Olympic Park.

Two ladies were in the group and they both came home with medals. Linda Douglass won gold in the beach sprint and bronze in 100 and 200 metres. Cristine Suffolk had a great run for the silver medal in the cross country plus a bronze in the 5000 metres on the track and a PB in the 10km road race.

Tonight summer pointscore continues with 150, 1000 and 3000 featuring on the track  plus all the throws. Starting time 6pm.

Summer Athletics Report
14th October, 2009

There wasn’t much action at the local level on Wednesday evening at Summer Athletics; luckily Nowra Athletics Club athletes have had plenty of opportunities at other competitions around the State.

One of which is the biggest athletic competition in Australia this year, the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games.

The World Masters Games is the world’s largest multi sport event attracting more than double the number of competitors than at the 2008 Olympics. The World Masters Games are open to everyone, with people needing only to meet their sport’s minimum age to enter.

The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games has over 28,000 entrants of which 11,635 come from NSW. A significant number of the Nowra Athletics Club’s athletes have made the effort and entered the biggest game in town.

One of the Club’s best middle distance athletes, Paul Davidson made the most of a home ground advantage on Saturday, to win a gold medal in the 2km Beach Run. Never one to rest on his morals or should I say World Championship medals, Paul went back the following day and won gold in the 3km Steeplechase!

Club sprinter Linda Douglass showed plenty of class against international competition on Saturday, winning a gold medal in the Beach Sprint. Over the next few days many of the Club’s athletes and officials are taking part in the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games and will no doubt,  be fantastic ambassadors for the Club and the region. We wish them all the best.

There were so many Nowra people there I thought I was delirious – and that was before I ran the 10km fire trail!

Congratulations to Ming Leung for entering one of the toughest marathons in Australia, 43km of up and down hills, heavily rutted dirt roads and bush tracks – great guts mate!

Alex Pitkethly and Jon Schol showed all their trail skills in the 10km race finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Linda Weatherill was the 2nd woman entrant home while Angela Bond, Karan Kenny and Bronwyn Jeffrey worked hard over the 10k’s all finishing well up the field.

Summer Athletics Report
7th October, 2009

Despite the odd mosquito Summer Athletics on Wednesday saw another great turnout of athletes and their families making the most of a beautiful Shoalhaven evening.

Many of the Club’s seasoned athletes were out to enjoy themselves, entering every available event while the newer members - a little shy at the moment, stuck to their favourite races or throws.

The Nowra Athletics Club is proudly known as a family friendly club and encourages everyone to participate no matter what your standard. On many occasions you’ll see parents competing in the throwing events whilst at the same time their sons and daughters are racing around the track. Having said that, the Club supports and encourages all its athletes to compete and achieve.

Currently the Club has numerous members who regularly compete at State and National Championships. Over the years the Nowra Athletics Club has fostered and supported athletes in the region to participate at National and International levels.

Regular training and a positive attitude are two very important factors for any aspiring athletes. Coaching by an accredited athletics coach can also assist athletes (of any ability) to achieve their goals.

To that end several of the Club’s members are fully qualified athletics coaches who will guide and mentor athletes, both young and old, to be their absolute best.

Tonight’s events include 60, 100, 600 and 1500 metre races with high jump and long jump events, shot put and javelin.

Due to the large number of entrants Club Officials are fairly stretched at times and would appreciate assistance from any athletes, club members or parents. Information and advice about scoring and running events is readily available for any trainee officials.

New members are always welcome at the Nowra Athletics Club and our Summer Athletics Competition. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Summer Athletics Report
30th September, 2009

Cold and windy conditions kept a few of the Club’s athletes away from Summer Athletics on Wednesday evening. However, those who braved the elements had plenty of fun and were rewarded in the pointscore competition.

In the field events the Javelin and High Jump had to be cancelled due to the windy conditions and where replaced with Shot Put, Discus and Long Jump.

Most athletes took part in the sprints and 400 metre races while only the diehard runners took part in the 1000 and 3000 metre events. As usual all the Club’s younger athletes took part in the ever popular fun relay – its’ a great talking point and always gets them laughing!

A couple of weekends ago Club athlete Bradley Sawyer took part in the 5km Race at the Sydney Running Festival. And what a race it was, there were around 10,000 other runners and Brad came second – fantastic effort!

Talking of fantastic efforts Michaela Quinn has done it again - this time at the Combined Independent Schools State Track and Field Championships held at the Athletics Centre at Homebush, Sydney.

Setting new Championship records over the day, Michaela won the 3000m and 1500m events and came second in the 800m race in an Australian Championship qualifying time. Well done Michaela!

Club officials are hoping for better weather at Summer Athletics this Wednesday. This week’s events include 80 & 90m hurdles, 200 and 2000m running events, a shuttle relay and numerous field events. Competitors need to arrive at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, Nowra (behind Shoalhaven High School) in plenty of time for the 6.00pm start.

New members are always welcome at the Nowra Athletics Club for further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Summer Athletics Report
23rd September, 2009

The last two weeks at Summer Athletics have seen good numbers of young, old and in-between athletes, all keen and fully charged to enjoy a great evening out in the spring air. There’s been fantastic running, jumping and throwing with plenty of laughs and loads good healthy fun.

Summer Athletics isn’t just about winning; participation and enjoyment are much more important. It’s a great feeling to come first in your race or division; however the real rewards come from knowing that you’ve taken part in a great sport and have done your best.

Wednesday’s meet saw a large field of runners in the junior 600 and 1500 metre events which kept race officials busy and onlookers excited with the action packed racing.

Another couple of events that saw plenty of action and participation were the Men’s and Women’s Javelin, Shot Put and Long Jump. Cheers of encouragement could be heard all over the ground when athletes let fly.

Nowra Athletics Club is delighted to see an increase in people at the Summer Athletics competition for this season and trust that all members and participants are enjoying the number and variety of events.

Due to the large number of entrants Club Officials are fairly stretched at times and would appreciate assistance from any athletes, club members or parents. To make it easier

Summer Athletics Report
16th September, 2009

Nowra Athletics Club’s Summer Athletics competition began in style on Wednesday evening. Despite the cool conditions everyone who participated in the shortened programme had a fantastic time.

Wednesday evening’s track events– 90 metre sprints and a 900 metre middle distance race were designed to satisfy the numerologists in the club who wanted to acknowledge the unusual date (9/09/09). The other two events, the long jump and shot put gave athletes a good introduction to the field.
