Summer Road Runs Report
Friday,20th February, 2009

Athletes from the Nowra Athletics Club saved the best till last in the final round of the Summer Road Runs. The Friday evening competition known for its’ friendly but very competitive nature saw runners from the Club complete the last round as a pairs race at the lovely Nowra Showground course.

A small group of enthusiastic female runners (Sky Martin, Eva Moeller-Duhme, Di Ozolins, Kaitlyn Bryce and Bronwyn Jeffrey) hit the road early with appropriate handicaps and all engines firing - setting a blistering pace as they headed off around the 6km course.

Team Moeller-Duhme – Eric and Eva big winners of the Summer Road Runs pairs race.

Eva Moeller-Duhme’s will to win and racing experience kept her in good stead as the race progressed along Bridge Road and up North Street back towards the Showground. Determined to make the most of her opportunities Eva was at full speed throughout the event.

In hot pursuit, emerging middle distance athlete Kaitlyn Bryce kept within striking distance. At exactly the right moment the Tomerong teenager engaged her overtaking manoeuvrers to pass and take the lead.

From that moment the top three winning positions were set with Kaitlyn Bryce first, Eva Moeller-Duhme second and Di Ozolins third.

The pairs contest wasn’t decided until the other member of Team Moeller-Duhme crossed the line in sixth position securing an overall points victory. Fantastic racing from both Eric and Eva made for an exciting race from start to finish – well done.

Plenty of good cheer and camaraderie was enjoyed by all at the presentation ceremony  afterwards.

Laura Daley knows a canny runner when she sees one (especially if they’ve been coached by Dean Bryce), selecting the top runner in the “Pick the Winner” contest.

A big thank you goes to all officials and helpers who have together made the Summer Road Runs competition run like clock work throughout the entire season. It has been a pleasure to participate in such a well organised and friendly event.

On Friday evening a barbeque and social function has been organised as a precursor to the Summer Road Runs Grand Final. The Grand Final race is a team event and will be held on Saturday afternoon at the Currambene Forest Course - the starting time is 5.30pm .

For further information about the Barbeque on Friday or last minute inquiries concerning the Grand Final on Saturday contact Kevyn Davis 4447 8309, Terry Bailey 4421 6065 or Paul Jennings 4421 8332.

To find the Currambene course on Saturday, turn left on to Forest Road, South Nowra (off the Princes’ Hwy) and travel east for 5kms. Look for the signs and a left hand turn then follow the signs to the car parking area. Please gather for announcements and administration at 5.15pm for a 5.30 start time.

Summer Road Runs – Cabbage Tree Lane
Friday 13th February, 2009

Runners from the Nowra Athletics Club had another fantastic run at the Cabbage Tree Lane course in the Summer Road Runs competition on Friday afternoon.

Race officials surprised everyone announcing the race as a sealed handicap event, which made the “Pick the winner” game more like a guessing competition.

Every runner gave it all they had and left nothing behind. This was clearly evident by the amount of runners who headed straight for the carbohydrates table (generously supplied by health conscious runners) after the finish.

Talking of good finishes the Summer Road Runs Competition will be finishing in two weeks time on Saturday 28th February with a “teams” handicap race at the Currambene State Forest course.

Each team will have 2, 3 or 4 team members and each person will receive a handicap. You can nominate and name your own team or if you don’t have a team race officials will provide you with one.

Please see race officials on Friday to sign up for the Grand Final event. If you can’t make it on Friday you can contact Doug Jeffrey 4446 0692, Kevyn Davis 4447 8309 or Paul Jennings 44218 332 to enter.

This coming Friday’s road run will be held at the Nowra Showground course. To make the event a little more interesting the race will be run as a “Pairs” event. You can nominate your own “Pair” or you can let the officials decide. Handicaps will be the order of the day and chocolates will be the prize!

In other news several Club members are organising a team of people to be a part of the 2009 Cancer Council - Relay For Life. Any interested members should speak to Lisa Carroll or Andy Depree at Summer Road Runs or Summer Athletics.

Summer Road Runs
Friday, 28th January, 2009

NOWRA Athletics Club runners made the most of a warm Friday afternoon with a six kilometre race at the Cabbage Tree Lane course at West Nowra.

Many of the regular runners have been improving week by week as their New Year training schedules kick off in earnest.

Alison Strand is one such athlete who this week bounced back to good form overcoming a challenging handicap to finish third.

Newly arrived British imports Paula and Phil had the benefit of an early break and took full advantage finishing in front at their first Summer Road Run.

After the race Kevyn Davis congratulated the winners and all the athletes who took part and most stayed quite late after the Proceedings and enjoyed the company of friends.

This week’s Summer Road Run will be held on Friday at the Vincentia course, starting from the Plantation Point car park, starting time 6.3Opm.

The Summer Road Run competition will be coming to a close in a few weeks and will be Concluded with a grand final race and other social events.

To make the day a little special organisers are contemplating a pair team race as the final event.

All runners will have a handicap suited to their ability Club officials have asked that all runners organise their pair team as soon as Possible and to let them know in the next week or so in order for the handicaps to be organised in advance.

Summer Road Runs
Friday, 9th January, 2009

Series three of the Nowra Athletics Club’s Summer Road Runs competition was held at the Nowra Town course on Friday evening.

Almost 30 runners took in the breathtaking sights out over the Shoalhaven River as they left the showground and made their way around the beautiful tree lined streets of Nowra Central.

Some runners clearly showed the effects of too much Christmas cheer and beer - falling well short of their usual racing pace. Whilst others made the most of the cooler conditions and took full advantage of extra training over the break.

Bronwyn Jeffrey set out early and once out of sight piled on the pace to open up an unbeatable lead over the field. She finished the race in a career best time which no doubt will attract the attention of the newly appointed race handicappers for next weeks’ outing.

Julie Evans came home strongly for second place while local Friday Night racing specialist Peter Khourey claimed another chocolate.

It was great to see so many of the Club’s runners limbering up for the year ahead and in obviously good form too.

The Nowra Athletics Club has two more series of the Summer Road Runs competition to complete before the Cross Country season begins in late March. Which means there’s plenty of time and stacks of opportunities to improve your fitness and have a lot of fun.

Talking of fun next weeks Summer Road Run will be held at the Tomerong State Forest course Jervis Bay Road, Woolamia. To find the Forest drive approximately 5km down Jervis Bay Road (off the Princes Hwy) watch for the signs and turn right in to the Tomerong State Forest. Please arrive at 6.15pm for announcements followed by 6.30pm start.

 Cabbage Tree Lane

Friday, 12th December, 2008

Nowra Athletics Club runners braved the elements to race in the Summer Road Runs at Cabbage Tree Lane on Friday afternoon . Once again Race officials were forced to use the wet weather course which saw runners take to the streets and walk ways in the semi-rural suburb.

Given the weather conditions any onlooker would have thought that the runners were in serious need of counselling. However, there was not one complaint. In fact under the silver tarpaulin, which doubled as the administration and weather protection area, it sounded like a party was going on!

Once the race started things got a tiny bit more serious mainly because the runners were getting their shoes wet and dirty.

Speed men Steve McCullagh and Patrick Ozolins gave chase to the front markers and managed to reel them all in before the finish to claim first and second place. A few seconds later Lisa Carroll crossed for third while Braedon Gernyi, Peter Khourey and Maxine Gernyi were not far behind.

The Foggo family surprisingly didn’t feature in the winners chocolate list this week but never fear - young Blake still managed to “pick the winners” and come away with a “Family Block”.

Don’t forget the Club Christmas run will be on this Friday 19th December at Greenfield Beach, Vincentia at 6.30pm. Members are asked to bring a plate and share a few laughs with friends.

Summer Road Runs will take a short break over Christmas and will recommence in early January. Keep an eye on the paper and the Club website for further details.

All pointscore information, results and a programme of events are available at the Club’s website.

Summer Road Runs Report - Vincentia
5th December, 2008

The Nowra Athletics Club Summer Road Run Competition was held at the beautiful Vincentia course on Friday afternoon .
A cooling North Easterly breeze made the conditions somewhat easier for all runners involved.

As usual much interest was shown in the handicaps and made the Pick the Winner competition quite interesting. Several of the competition runners could feel the weight of expectation bearing down on them even before the start.

Patrick Ozolins overcame a substantial handicap to finish the race in style by overtaking serial course shortener Dean Bryce in the final 200m for the chocolate prize.

A little further back in a very close finish, Mat Kinsele, Braedon Gernyi, Jyle Smith, Doug Jeffrey, Scott Martin, Julie Evans and Alison Coates all crossed the line within seconds. Other runners who performed extremely well this week and gave all they had included Debbie Sansom, Peter Khourey and Bronwyn Jeffrey.

Race officials deserve a special mention for their tireless work in preparing the course, allocating handicaps and other administrative duties. Thank you!

Next Friday’s Road Run Competition will see runners venture through the Currambene State Forest. Runners will be anticipating a great afternoon especially with all those bush tracks and gentle slopes. (If the weather turns bad the run will be transferred to the Cabbage Tree Lane course)

To find the Currambene course on Friday, turn left on to Forest Road, South Nowra (off the Princes’ Hwy) and travel east for 5kms. Look for the signs and a left hand turn then follow the signs to the car parking area. Please gather for announcements and administration at 6.15pm for a 6.30 start time.

Summer Road Runs – Cabbage Tree Lane
Report for Wed. 3rd December.2008

Nowra Athletics Club runners ventured out to the Cabbage Tree Lane course on Friday afternoon  ( 28-11-08)  to enjoy another round of the Summer Road Runs series.

Race officials were forced to use the wet weather course due to the tremendous downpour that fell from the skies earlier in the afternoon. However, most runners took advantage of the alternate roadside running track and milder conditions to stretch the legs and open the lungs.

Fridays’ Nowra Athletics Club Summer Road Run
 winner Peter Khourey.

It was an all male affair for the top three places on Friday afternoon. Peter Khourey made an excellent start over the first two kilometres and continued on at a pace that ensured a well earned victory. Not far behind Scott Foggo claimed another major placing while Dean Bryce gave plenty to finish in third spot.

Some of the Club’s speedier brigade made the effort over the open ground to claw back the handicaps and finish close to the leaders. Damian Smith had the fastest time again while Patrick Ozolins posted a credible time of 20.49 to finish fourth.

Lisa Carroll, Maxine Gernyi Eva Moeller-Duhme, Leane Davidson and Claire Pitkethly were the best of the girls this week. No doubt the female contingent will bounce back at Vincentia next week and claim all the prizes.

It was good to see Club running families Smith, Carroll, Gernyi and Foggo having the whole team there and taking part once again. A family that runs together - gets together!

In a small change to last week’s Christmas announcement the Club Christmas run will be on Saturday 19th December

at Greenfield Beach, Vincentia. Hopefully most will be able to come along and enjoy a social outing and a run.

Next week’s Summer Road Run will be held at the Vincentia course Plantation Point, Vincentia. All runners should meet at the Plantation Point car park at 6.15pm for announcements and handicaps followed by a 6.30pm start.

All pointscore information, results and a programme of events are available at the Club’s website.

Summer Road Runs – Cambewarra
21st November, 2008

Over forty enthusiastic runners from the Nowra Athletics Club turned up for another run at the Cambewarra course in the Summer Road Runs competition on Friday.

There was a sense of anticipation in the air as handicaps were checked and double checked while the “Pick the Winner” list was filled out. The smart money was on Damian Smith. What else could you do - with his recent success in a Canberra bush run, his 50km jog from Bendeela to Berry and his usual 2 hour training runs.

Of course there were plenty of other favourites in contention for the Big Chocolate – Mat Kinsele, Gareth Barnes, Blake Foggo, Glen and Debbie Sansom, Steve McCullagh, Peter Khourey and Alison Coates to name just a few.

For most of the race Sky Martin was quietly working her way to the finish line well ahead of any competitors. Unfortunately Sky took a sharp right hand turn at the wrong corner adding another 500m to her race which ultimately put her out of contention for first place. However she still managed to come home strongly and finish in third position just behind winner Steve McCullagh and the flying Blake Foggo.

Damian Smith succeeded in posting the fastest time over the 6km scenic course and finished in fourth place.

Local Cambewarra runners Paul Davidson, Cristine Suffolk, Leane Davidson and Tammy Jones all had good outings and will no doubt be looking forward to a handicap break at the next Cambewarra run.

In other news Club runners are reminded of our Christmas social run at Murrays Beach on the 20th December. A good social run with plenty of laughs and a swim at the beach will be just the thing to kick off your Xmas festivities.

Next week’s Summer Road Run will be held at the Cabbage Tree Lane course. The Cabbage Tree Lane course is approximately 1km (on the left) from the corners of Cabbage Tree Lane and Yalwal Road. All runners should meet at 6.15pm for announcements and handicaps followed by a 6.30pm start.

All pointscore information, results and a programme of events are available at the Club’s website.

Summer Road Runs
19th November, 2008

Nowra Athletic Club runners braved the elements on Friday afternoon ( 14 - 11 - 08) to complete another round of the Summer Road Runs competition. The scheduled run was to be held at the Forest course but due to the very wet conditions it was transferred to the Vincentia track at the last minute.

As everyone knows runners are all mad. Running in a tropical downpour well, that’s just normal. So when the race got under way and the rain came down, everyone ran that little bit harder to keep dry and finish quicker – you know it makes sense?

At the end of the 6km race, less than 30 seconds separated the first five places. Race winner Scott Foggo came home with a strong finish to be just ahead of “Mr Consistency” Peter Khourey and “Canberra” Chris Davies.

It was great to see Sky Martin back in the racing colours on Friday, well done. Talking of returns, seasoned travellers Maxine, Les and Braedon Gernyi made a family affair of the Friday run and showed no signs of fatigue for the thousands of kilometres they’ve clocked up.

In other news the Bendeela to Berry String Relay was a raging success. Everyone who was there had a fantastic time, plenty of hills with plenty of laughs. Big thanks to organisers Paul, Terry, Kevyn and Andrew. Well done chaps!

Next week’s Summer Road Run will be held at the Cambewarra course. All runners should gather on Friday 20th November at the Cambewarra School of Arts Hall at the corner of Main Road and Goorama Drive, Cambewarra at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start.

All pointscore information, results and a programme of events are available at the Club’s website.

Summer Road Runs – Friday Night Special
31st October, 2008

Series two of the Nowra Athletics Club’s Summer Road Runs competition was held at the Nowra town course on Friday evening.

Almost 40 runners took in the breathtaking sights out over the Shoalhaven River as they left the showground and made their way around the beautiful tree lined streets of Nowra Central.

Local runner Tammy Jones was off to a flying start at Summer Road Runs in Nowra Central on Friday evening.

Thankfully the temperature dropped somewhat before the race which enabled runners to put in maximum effort over the whole course. Competition was fierce and the lure of “Happy Hour” played hard on some runners’ minds (Steve and Scott) as they made their way past the Bridge Road establishment.

After climbing the North Street hill runners made their way through the Showground and past the post for the first time. The adoring crowds kept competitors spirits high with encouraging words and useful racing tips.

Doug Jeffrey, Simone Foggo and Claire Pitkethly shared the chocolate spoils at the end which made all those hills worthwhile. Dean Bryce missed his shortcut opportunity but still managed a win in the “Pick the Winner” – well done!

Next weeks run is the Bendella to Berry String Relay starting on Sunday morning at around 9.30am. If you haven’t organised a team or would like to be in one just turn up on Sunday with your running gear, cut lunch and compass. AJ, Paul and Terry will make sure you’re well looked after.

Runners should arrive at the Kangaroo Valley Showground at 9.30am for a 10.am start at Jacks Corner Road.

The following week the Friday evening competition will resume as normal. Check the website and or keep an eye on the paper for further details.

All pointscore information, results and programs of events are available at the Club’s website.

Summer Road Runs – Currambene Course
Saturday, 25th October, 2008

The Nowra Athletics Club Summer Road Run Competition took to the bush again on the weekend with an exhilarating 6km run through the scenic Currambene Forest.

Runners made the most of the bush trails and gravel roads to improve racing fitness and sharpen up their hill climbing skills.

Talking of skills and fitness the Club's newest runner Michael Hutchesson opened his winners account on Saturday narrowly defeating Laura Daley in the final 200 metres. A short time later Eva Moeller-Duhme, fresh from the Melbourne Marathon, completed the race in style to claim third place.

Saturdays outing was the last weekend run in Series 1 of the competition, at this stage the top three point scorers are Blake Foggo(223), Simone Foggo(215) and Scott Martin(212).

Next week's run (which is the beginning of Series 2) sees the competition move to a Friday evening with a start time of 6.30pm. This is a slight change to the previously published program so please take note.

Fridays run will commence from the Nowra Showground at 6.30pm. Runners should gather for handicaps and announcements at approximately 6.15pm.

All pointscore information, results and programs of events are available at the Club's website.

Summer Road Runs – Vincentia
Saturday, 18th October, 2008

The Nowra Athletics Club Summer Road Run Competition was held at the beautiful seaside village of Vincentia on Saturday, 18th October, 2008. The Vincentia course is a demanding run that takes in a number of the residential streets, trailing up and down hills with the back third of the course running adjacent to bush and beach reserves.

Long serving Club member and devoted runner Kevyn Davis made a big job look easy coming away with a well earned win in the handicap event.

Simone Foggo continued on with her climb up the rankings table by finishing second just ahead of Claire Pitkethly in a tight race to the line. Rose Dooley and Peter Khourey both deserve a mention for a well run race finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

Meanwhile backmarkers Perry Strand, Bill Broughton, Peter Dooley and Jon Schol showed their good form on Saturday all finishing with very credible times.

Young Alex Pitkethly posted the fastest time at Vincentia and is well on target for big things in his Steeplechase event at the upcoming Pacific School Games.

Next Saturday's Road Run Competition will see runners venture through the Currambene State Forest for the first time in a few years. No doubt runners will be anticipating a great afternoon especially with all those bush tracks and gentle slopes.

To find the Currambene course, turn left on to Forest Road, South Nowra (off the Princes' Hwy) and travel east for 5kms. Look for the signs and a left hand turn then follow the signs to the car parking area. Please gather for announcements and administration at 4.15pm for a 4.30 start time.

For further results or information log on to the Nowra Athletics Club website.

Summer Road Runs – Cabbage Tree Lane
Report 15th October, 2008

The Nowra Athletics Club Summer Road Run Competition headed out to the Cabbage Tree Lane course on Saturday. The term “road run” fairly loosely describes the race as runners were treated to a thickly wooded BMX bi-cycle track as part of the 5.5km course.

There were no complaints – runners just run. They don’t care where or when so long as they’re out enjoying life!

Laura Daley was the first home in the handicap event finishing well clear in a time surely to awaken the handicap gods! Claire Pitkethley and Bronwyn Jeffrey came in next picking up the minor places to complete the female “clean sweep” of the chocolates.

Perry Strand reminded us all of the legendary course shortening skills of Dean Bryce when he managed to hit the front early with a sharp left turn at one of the many winding sections of the bush running track. To his credit, Perry “The Pirate” hoisted the white flag well before the finish and allowed many others to pass.

For all runners keeping an eye on the running program there has been a change.

and Michelle Cumming (background) enjoying the
5.5km Cabbage Tree Lane course

The scheduled String Relay is now set down for Sunday 9th November and will be run from Bendeela to Berry. The Bendeela to Berry String Relay has some of the most beautiful scenery you’ll ever see. It starts at the end of Jack’s Corner Road in the morning and finishes at the Rotary Park in Berry. Be part of the team and you’ll be richer for the experience.

For further details speak to Paul, Terry or Kevyn

Another change to the program is that the first Friday evening run (Round 1, Series 2) will be on Friday 31st October 6.30pm at the Nowra Showground. So please adjust your calendars/diaries so as not to miss out.

Next week’s Summer Road Run will be held at the Vincentia course, starting from Plantation Point car park, Vincentia on Saturday at 4.30pm.

In order to participate in Summer Road Runs, all members must have their membership forms submitted for processing. Please see Club officials prior to the start of Summer Road Runs to finalise all administration matters.

Road Run -Cambewarra
Sat. 27th September, 2008

The Nowra Athletics Club Summer Road Run competition was held in Cambewarra on Saturday. Runners gathered at the School of Arts Hall for pre-race announcements and last minute instructions before heading out through the tree lined residential streets and on to the gravel roads of the beautiful rural course.

Front markers with a combination of local experience, mental toughness and an eye on the Rock Lea Road prizes got away early and made sure they were home first to claim the honours. Congratulations Simone Foggo, Simone Wright and Bronwyn Jeffrey.

The course was prepared to perfection with course markers, attendees and several drink stations. All of which was only made possible with the help and assistance of Alison Coates, Bill Seary, Mat Kinsele and Faye & Henry Suffolk. Thank you!

The newest member of the Club Miss Katie Martin was in attendance and showed the signs of being a contented distance runner with a cute smile and a happy disposition. Congratulations Skye & Scott and big sister Erin.
There's still a few of our regular runners on the sick and injured list at the moment. We all hope to see you back on track soon and look forward to the day.

Next week's Summer Road Run event is a social run and will be at the North Nowra course. Runners should gather at the Bernie Regan Sporting Complex, West Cambewarra Road, North Nowra at approximately 4.15pm for the 4.30pm start.
