Great Success for Nowra Athletics Club 2012-2013

27th April, 2013

The Nowra Athletics Club 53rd Annual Report and Presentation night was held on Saturday to a packed house of athletes and their families. Affable club patron Rod Gibb kicked off the evening with the presentation of reports, election of office bearers and committee persons. Congratulations to all incoming executive and committee persons, with a big warm welcome extended to newest committee member, Trish Bird. As always the club is measurably indebted and grateful to all committee members and volunteers, without your help the 2012/2013 year wouldn’t have been the huge success that it was. Thank you to all of you.

Jasmine Greenwood, recipient of the John Morris encouragement award standing with Peter Dooley (L) club president and Rod Gibb (R) Club Patron.

Club President Peter Dooley chaired the evening with club captains Andrew Havadjia and Melinda Mustapic being the official presenters of awards. Some great footage of athletes in action was also shown throughout the evening courtesy of Darlene and Cameron Musgrove.

Athletes with consistent and notable performances were recognised in all Categories and Divisions in the 2012/2013 Summer Athletics, 2012 Cross Country and Summer Road Runs competitions.

The John Morris Encouragement Award, which was selected from the 2km and 3km cross country participants, was awarded to Jasmine Greenwood. The Nowra Toyota Encouragement Award, which was selected from the medium and long course cross country participants, went to Scott Dobson.  Jasmine and Scott have consistently improved over the cross country season achieving some great times and pb’s. Congratulations to both of you and we are looking forward to what you come up with this year!

The Neville Markham Distance Runner of the Year Award went to hard working athlete Peter Khourey. To qualify for this award runners have to run a minimum of 10km’s.   Peter was a relatively late starter to the running game, starting as a veteran. Over the years Peter has run many a marathon and half marathon all the while achieving great times and pb’s. Congratulations Peter, well deserved.

The high achievement award for 2012-2013 was hotly contested; however there can only be one winner and this year’s winner is 14 year old Samantha Peace. Discus thrower and shot put thrower Samantha has had a very impressive 2012/2013 thus far.   Her most recent achievement was winning gold in the U17 Discus and silver in the U16 Discus at the Australian Track and Field Championships in Perth in March. Her other achievements include: Gold- 14yrs discus – Little Athletics Championships Wagga Wagga February 2013. Gold – 16yrs discuss and under 16 record holder, NSW Country Championships January 2013. Silver U17 Discus Australian Youth and Junior championships December 2012. Gold U15 Discus NSW All Schools Championships Sydney October 2012. Gold 14yrs Discus Regional Athletics Canberra July 2012. Congratulations Samantha, you have certainly earned this award!

The Club’s most prestigious award, the Frank McCaffrey Top Performance Award went to The Open Women’s Cross Country Relay Team of Michaela Quinn, Heather Sinclair, Tori Jones and Elisha Bell. The girls made club history in 2012 when they won the hotly contested women’s open 4km event at the State Relay Championships held at Miranda.  The girls competed against 11 very experienced Sydney teams who had a large pool of talent amongst them as well as two competitive country teams. Each girl ran their absolute heart out to take the gold and it still brings a tear to the eye of club patron Rodd Gibb to regal the story. Great achievement girls, you all are top performers. Hold the Frank McCaffrey award with pride, it is all yours!

Congratulations to all award recipients of the 2012/2013 season and to all athletes who completed in events throughout the year.

Club officials would like to thank all athletes, officials, families and friends who took part in the 2012/2013 competitions for their participation and assistance throughout the season.

Winners of the Frank McCaffrey Top Performance Award, (L to R)  Club Patron Rod Gibb, Tori Jones, Heather Sinclair, Michaela Quinn and club president Peter Dooley. Missing Elisa Bell.

Club President Peter Dooley officially closed the evening inviting everyone to enjoy the yummy supper and catch up with fellow athletes.

Club Patron Rod Gibb was the host with the most as he got the evening underway with the presentation of reports, the election of office bearers and committee persons. A huge thank you goes out to the executive/committee members, workers and volunteers who all helped in making the three competitions conducted by the Club in 2011/2012 so successful.

After many years serving as club President, Kevyn Davis has decided to call it a day, as such, and retired from the position. Kevyn has worked tirelessly during his reign as President, passionately supporting the club in all its endeavours. His love of running is evident when in conversation with him; the enthusiasm just oozes out of him, infecting everyone who crosses his path with the running bug! Thank you so much for all the hard work and dedication Kevyn, it is truly admirable.  On that note, a big warm welcome goes out to newly elected Club President, Peter Dooley. Congratulations Peter.

Another valued committee member, Treasurer Claire Pikethly has also resigned after many years’ service due to relocating. Claire has done a fantastic job as Treasurer, making her job look effortless. In fact, it was suggested to Claire that she could still be Treasurer from her new abode, however she firmly refused, something about all the travelling being a bit of a problem. We will sorely miss Claire and wish her well in her new endeavours. With an outgoing Treasurer comes a new one, and a big warm welcome is extended to new club treasurer Alison Havadjia. Congratulations Alison.

Congratulations must also go to all incoming executive and committee persons.

Athletes with consistent and notable performances were recognised in all Categories and Divisions in the 2011/2012 Summer Athletics, 2011 Cross Country and Summer Road Runs competitions.

Club members who received awards for consistent effort and achievement throughout the competitions included Jeremy Head (John Morris Junior Encouragement Award), Sandra Coyte (Nowra Toyota Senior Encouragement Award), and Sonja Rodda (T and F “Quiet Achiever” Award). Fantastic!

Rising stars and the Club’s high achievers were officially recognised with numerous awards and record certificates. This year’s high achiever recipients were Alex Pikethly, Harry Scouller, Christine Suffolk, Aaron Spiessberger, Samantha Peace and Michaela Quinn. Congratulations everyone, well done.

Running mum of four, Melinda Mustapic deservedly received the Club Person of the Year award. Melinda works tirelessly behind the scenes for the club, from organising teams for state relay events, report writing to club photographer, you name it she has done it, and all with a smile on her face! Congratulations Mel.

The Neville Markham Distance Runner of the Year award went to that affable duo of running Eric and Eva Moeller-Duhme. Evergreen Eric and Eva are truly inspirational, running a myriad of long distance events between them. Eric is the master of the marathon while Eva has knocked over many a half marathon, although they both have conquered too many long distance races for this writer to remember.  They are always encouraging others to give running a go, training them up and helping them achieve their first “big one”, be it the city to surf to a full marathon. Congratulations Eric and Eva.

The clubs most prestigious athletic award, “The Frank McCaffrey Top Performance Award” went to two hard working athletes, Jed Frank and Lynda Douglass. Jed captured everyone’s attention with his grand effort at last year’s  State Road Relay Championships where he not only ran one leg in one team, but one leg in three different age teams for Nowra Athletics Club! What true testament to the word sportsmanship! Lynda Douglass has made a name for herself with her recent outstanding efforts at the Australian Masters in Melbourne. Lynda received gold for the 60m, 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m relays for the 50 to 54years age group.  Congratulations both to Jed and Lynda on such outstanding achievements.

Congratulations to all who made the effort to compete and all those lucky enough to receive awards.

Two remarkable club athletes were duly inducted as Life Members. They were none other than Bernie Condon and Bill Broughton. Congratulations Bernie and Bill, well deserved indeed.

A special mention must go out to Darlene and Cameron Musgrove who provided the entertaining video for viewing, highlighting the various running styles of club athletes throughout the year, some quite comical indeed, the writer's included! Thanks guys!

Club officials would like to thank all athletes, officials, families and friends who took part in the 2011/2012 competitions for their participation and assistance throughout the season.

The evening came to a close with Club Patron Rod Gibb thanking everyone and inviting all present to stay for supper, refreshments and a friendly chat.
