2011 Shoalhaven King of the Mountain Report A weekend of glorious weather set the conditions for cross country running of the gruelling 32km endurance race, the King of the Mountain on Sunday. There were multitudes of volunteers who got the “king”, as it affectionately known, on the road and it could not possibly have run as smoothly as it did without the awesome effort everyone put in. From administration assistants, traffic marshals, drink station attendants, computer experts, you name it, they did it! Thankyou everyone, you are all winners! Damien Smith proved once again that this is his race, being the first local male home in a time of 2.18.49 and Sabina Hamaty secured the title of first local female home, her time being 2.47.21. Mind you, for these long distance runners who like to embark on 100km runs, this was most likely just a teaser! Great results, guys! You made Nowra proud! Bill Stalhut ran a great race to take the accolades for being first in the male 50-59 category in a time of 2.25.44 and Peter Junk did just as well, deciding to take the male 60-69 section. Peter’s time was 2.41.12. Not to be left out of the loop, Kathy Johnson put the big ones in and was the first female home in the 60-69 age group! Kathy’s time was 4.08.02. A grand effort from our more “experienced” runners! A few local runners took on the challenge of the mountain for the first time this year and finished the course in an upright position, so they’re all quite happy about that. Congratulations go to Michelle Cumming, Sky Martin, Maxine Gernyi and Paula Copley for completing such an arduous race! Will they be back next year? I’d advise asking that question in about a week’s time! Personal bests were achieved all over the place for many Nowra runners; it certainly was a day of great achievements! Lisa Carroll ran like a gazelle to slash about 20 minutes off her previous best time and was the second local female home! Annie Scholfield followed suit and improved on last years’ time by almost 25 minutes! Angela Bond was another improver, her time being 14 minutes faster than her last KOM effort. I’ll have what they’re having! Kangaroo Valley girl Karan Kenny did her local community proud by running a superb race, always a consistent runner. Kevyn Davis impressed the male contingent by taking 9 minutes off last year’s time, as did Steve McCullagh and Scott Martin, both shaving off 8 minutes! Nowra runners are on fire! As per tradition, Navy versed Nowra in a men’s team event, with Nowra being the overall winners. Jeff Rayner, Raimund Winkler and Joshua Newton were the very fit Navy side and Damien Smith, Darrin Smith and Bill Stalhut shone for Nowra. Congratulations must go to all who entered this challenging race, it is an achievement to be proud of. Many thanks from the race organisers go to the sponsors and organisations that supported this year’s King of the Mountain. They include Nowra Toyota, Peter Rose Eyecare Plus Optometrists, Kennedy’s Buses, Shoalhaven Spring Water, Shoalhaven Community Transport, Cambewarra Public School, Kangaroo Valley Public School P&C and local members of the SES and NSW Ambulance Service.

2011 Shoalhaven King of the Mountain Report It’s on again, less than two weeks until the 32km challenge over the mountain, the annual Shoalhaven king of the Mountain. “The King”, as it is affectionately known, is a gruelling 32km run beginning at Cambewarra Public School, winding its way over Mt Scanzi and ending at the picturesque Kangaroo Valley Showground. Many local runners and out of towners alike have already registered to take part in this year’s drawcard event for long distance running on the Shoalhaven calendar. This year “The King” will start at 9.00am sharp on Sunday the 3rd of July from Cambewarra, seen by many experienced in the running fraternity as equal to any marathon. As far as distance goes it is three quarters the distance of a full marathon, however the energy required to complete the event is equal to what would be required to run a marathon. To ensure all competitors maintain hydration through the race, there will be drink and refreshment stations located every few kilometres. This year will be the 37th running of this event, with many famous sports people having taken on the mountain and Shoalhaven runners alike. The Men’s race record of 1hr 51min 12 sec was set in 1980 by local resident and current running Coach Rob McDonald. The Women’s record of 2hr 20min 38sec is held by Commonwealth Marathon Gold Medallist Kerryn McCann set in 1992. Both these records have stood the test of time and are once again on the table, if breaking records is your motivation. Nowra Athletic Club will be well represented by its members, with many putting the hard yards in over the past few months. The first local Male and Female runners to cross the line will receive a fabulous pair of “Addidas” running sunglasses kindly donated by Peter Rose Eyecare Plus Optometrists, which should see some fierce competition amongst the hometown contenders! As in previous years, The King is well supported by local businesses and organisations including main sponsor Nowra Toyota, Shoalhaven Spring Water, Shoalhaven Community Transport, Kennedy’s Bus and Coaches, Peter Rose Eyecare Plus Optometrists and Cambewarra Public School, which organisers would sincerely like to thank. On completion of the race, yummy refreshments for competitors and spectators will be available to enjoy from the Country Canteen, whilst awaiting the presentation ceremony which will begin at about 1.20pm. For your convenience a Kennedy’s bus will depart from the Kangaroo Valley Showground after the completion of the event, and will bring athletes and supporters back to the start at Cambewarra Public School so vehicles can be collected. Entries are being taken online at www.kingofthemountainnowra.org.au , alternatively participants can register on the day Sunday 3rd July, in the administration area at Cambewarra School prior to the 9.00am start. It is a great racing opportunity for local runners or for that matter anyone who would like to experience some of the beautiful postcard-like scenery of the Shoalhaven. Starting at 9am at Cambewarra public school, the “King” is a 32km endurance race which eventually finishes at the Kangaroo Valley Showground. The competitors will begin their run through the streets of Cambewarra Village, along to Hockeys Lane, pumping their legs up Illaroo and Budgong Roads, climb the arduous Mount Scanzi, and finally, with whatever they have left, complete their descent into Kangaroo Valley.
