Nowra Athletics Club Report

6th July, 2009

The Nowra Athletic Club’s annual endurance race “The Shoalhaven King of the Mountain” was held on Sunday morning. Conditions were a little cool and runners were faced with a fairly stiff westerly headwind while making their way along Illaroo Road. As the morning progressed the wind dropped and made for almost perfect racing conditions.

Club runners featured prominently in the field of nearly 150 competitors and were well represented at the presentation afterwards. The first Nowra Athletic Club runners home were Sabina Hamaty and Damian Smith. Both received trophies and a prize generously donated by local sponsors Eyecare Plus Peter Rose Optometrists and Adidas.

Perry Strand and Scott Martin had fabulous runs and chased the leader pack throughout the event - both finished in the top 20. Local women Alison Stand, Karan Kenny and Angela Bond showed plenty of courage climbing up Mt Scanzi again all finishing yet another King of the Mountain.

Other runners with noteable performances included Greame Pepper, Bill Boughton, Steve McCullagh, Bill Stahlhut, Gerald Buckley and Rob Pickard.

All the individual successes of the day were only made possible by the combined efforts of a committed team of workers, helpers and friends of the Nowra Athletics Club. Thank you for your support and assistance in the lead up to the day and the day itself – another big win folks!

Big supporters of The Shoalhaven King of the Mountain included local businesses Nowra Toyota, Shoalhaven Spring Water, Kennedy’s Bus & Coaches and Eyecare Plus Peter Rose Optometrists. Invaluable assistance came from Cambewarra Public School, Kangaroo Valley Public School P&C, Shoalhaven Community Transport and St John’s Ambulance Service.

2009 Shoalhaven King of the Mountain Report
1st July, 2009

This Sunday the Shoalhaven King of the Mountain 32km endurance running race is on for the 35th consecutive year.

Entries have been pouring in from local sports people, outdoor enthusiasts and of course endurance runners who make a habit of entering half marathons, marathons and other endurance running events.

This annual long distance running event is organised by the Nowra Athletics Club and is set down for this Sunday 5th July with a 9.00am start time.

The Shoalhaven King of the Mountain is a 32km endurance event which starts at the Cambewarra Public School and eventually finishes at the Kangaroo Valley Showground. The runners will head out through the streets of Cambewarra, down Hockey’s Lane, along Illaroo and Budgong Roads up over Mt Scanzi and then down through Kangaroo Valley.

The event is well supported by local businesses and organisations including Nowra Toyota, Shoalhaven Spring Water, Shoalhaven Community Transport, Kennedy’s Bus and Coaches, Peter Rose Eyecare Plus Optometrists, Cambewarra Public School and St John’s Ambulance Service.

Along the course itself runners will have access to ample drink and refreshment stations that provide water, sports drink, fruit and other energy foods. Traffic marshals and support vehicles will provide runners with the necessary instructions along the route to comply with local traffic regulations.

At the end of the race entrants can relax and enjoy a nice cup of tea at the Country Canteen and stay for the presentation ceremony which starts at around 1.20pm.

2009 Shoalhaven King of the Mountain Report
22nd June, 2009

The Shoalhaven King of the Mountain is less than two week’s away and local runners are geared up and as fit as they can be for another years challenge.

The “King” as its known locally is a 32km endurance event which runs from the Cambewarra Public School to Kangaroo Valley Showground via Mt Scanzi. Not for the faint hearted the King is a great event for runners and sports people generally to experience an endurance running race.

Alison Strand (1st Local Female 2008) at a recent training run is in good shape for this years Shoalhaven King of the Mountain

The Shoalhaven King of the Mountain (Sunday 5th July at 9.00am) is seen by many experienced distance runners as equal to a Marathon. In terms of distance it falls a little short but in relation to energy required the race is at least as difficult as most of the popular marathons in Australia today.

The local event is usually conducted around this time of the year (July) and has been doing so for the last thirty five years. In that time the King has seen many famous sports people compete against local Shoalhaven runners.

The Men’s race record of 1.51.12 set in 1980 is held by local resident and Athletics Coach Rob McDonald. The Women’s record 2.20.38 was set by Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Kerryn McCann back in 1992.

Both records have stood the test of time and if results over the last few years are any indication may well be the ones to beat for many years ahead.

Local Nowra Athletics Club runners will be well represented in the event - personal records and achievements will be the main focus for the majority of the Clubs runners. However, the first local male and female runners home will receive fabulous Addidas racing sunglasses( donated by Peter Rose Eyecare Plus Optometrists) as part of their prize and will no doubt see some great contests.

The event is well supported by local businesses and organisations including main sponsor Nowra Toyota, Shoalhaven Spring Water, Shoalhaven Community Transport, Kennedy’s Bus and Coaches, Peter Rose Eyecare Plus Optometrists, Cambewarra Public School and St John’s Ambulance Service.

Along the course itself drink and refreshment stations are provided every few kilometres to ensure runners are well hydrated.

At the end of the race entrants can relax and enjoy a nice cup of tea at the Country Canteen and stay for the presentation ceremony which starts at around 1.20pm.

For your convenience a Kennedy’s bus will depart from the Kangaroo Valley Showground after the completion of the event, and will bring athletes and supporters back to the start at Cambewarra Public School so vehicles can be collected.
