Nowra Club at the Country T & F Championships |
| Country Championships 160+yrs Relay - 10 Second Challenge A highlight each year at the Country Championships for the Nowra Club is the men’s 40-49yrs relay . This year it was called the Relay 30+.To enable small clubs to enter a team, the team ages can be under 40, provided the total age is 160+. This year Melinda Mustapic did an excellent job of rounding up club members to compete and came up with two teams. Last year the ‘A’ team, the “Havadjia’s Jets” were Andrew Havadjia 44yrs, Paul Musgrove 41, David Webb 42yrs and Andrew Rodda 42 years for a total of 169years. The ‘B’ team, the “Master Blasters”, were Doug McNally 60yrs, Geoff Crook 51yrs, Glen Mustapic 40yrs and Bernie Condon 75yrs for a total of 226 years. Andrew Havadjia was excited by the prospects of his team and as the adrenalin kicked in stated that his A team would beat the Master Blasters B team by 10 Seconds. Doug McNally was quick to take up the challenge and bet beers that this would not happen. The Challenge was on! The Master Blasters were only 9.4 seconds behind. They collected their Beers at a dinner that night. Unfortunately this year Paul Musgrove sustained an injury and the Jets lost their fourth runner. Peter Dooley ably took his place and the Jets burnt up the track to win a Gold Medal. However they were only only 7.7 sec ahead of the Master Blasters and bought the Beers again this year. The results as on the Athletics NSW website is as follows: Event 260 Men 4x100 metre Relay 30+ 1 Nowra Athletics Club 'A' 51.92 ( Havadjia's Jets) 2 Min(Mingara) 'B' 53.43 3 Illawarra Blue Stars Athletic 'A' 53.44 4 Nowra Athletics Club 'B' 59.62 (Master Blasters) The Master Blasters were only 7.7 seconds behind. They collected their Beers once again at a dinner that night. I have been told that the Jets are already training hard and are counting the days until the next Country Championships. Bernie Condon |
