Nowra Athletics McCaffrey Challenge Return Leg at Dapto 70 NAC competing members and a large contingent of supporters made the trip to try and retrieve that Cup. Unfortunately we were not successful in the overall challenge, going down in the 1k, 2k, 3k and 8k to the superior numbered KJ group. The 4k run belonged to us with a good margin. General comments about the track were positive. Although the lack of hills is a little disconcerting as there is no reprieve, it provides a different mental challenge as well as a physical one. It was good for runners to experience the different surface as it was quite spongy in places. Ruts provided a small challenge as did the hiccup of a hill at the end of the run. |

The Nowra Athletics Team who gave the Kembla Joggers a great contest in the McCaffrey Challenge |
In the 1k event, Shenay Edwards finished with the winning time of 3.33.6. Hot on her heals was Jade Mustapic finishing with 3.33.7, and Bree O’Donnell not too far behind on 3.59.1. Good performances were also seen by Annabelle Secombe, Harriet Urquhart, Ethan Foster-Perry and Emily Buringaga. The 2k event produced some excellent times from Lou Reali – 8.09, Max Bricker 8.10 and Alastair Clarke - 8.17. India Secombe also had a good run finishing close to the middle of the pack. James Godwin did well to keep ahead of the very focused Peter Dooley. James ran 4th in the 3k with a time of 10.58. Peter was hot on his heels finishing 6th with a time of 11.11. Jeremy Head had added incentive as no sooner had he crossed the line than he had to hand his shoes over to his forgetful mum who arrived at the track in bare feet. The 4k had the biggest turnout of NAC runners which gave us the benefit and chance to win one of the distances. Aaron Spiessberger took line honours with an impressive time of 13.11 and Jason Huntsman ran 4th in a time of 13.47, Jye Edwards was 7th with a time of 14.40, Michaela Quinn was the first NAC woman home in 9th Place with a time of 15.05. |
|
The biggest group was the hard core long distance runners with over 60 competitors. First over the line for us was Scott Secombe in 4th place (30.36), Perry Strand was 6th (31.01) – The question has to be asked, is it the Hokka’s giving you that edge???? Scott Martin was in 7th place (31.03), Brad Sawyers 10th (32.05). Cathy Head made good ground in her borrowed shoes and Eva and Eric Moller- Dhume backed up good runs from the week before at the M7 marathon. Local Club runner Ming Leung also competed in the M7 marathon in Sydney last weekend after only a 3 week lull from the Perth Marathon. In both races Ming recorded a time of 3.59.30. An amazing effort. Well done. Next week will see the end of our Winter Competition. There will be no formal races at Willandra next Saturday but the presentation of certificates will begin after a fun mixed relay. The afternoon will commence at 2.30 as usual. Please bring a plate to share. The canteen will be open for tea and coffee and anyone who wants to run the big back hill should do so as rumor has it, that it won’t be part of the course in the near future. A quick reminder for anyone interested in running the Capital to Coast multi stage event scheduled for 17 – 19th August 2012. Entries are still available for individuals and teams of 3. Anyone interested in volunteering or running can obtain information from the link on this website's Home Page. |

Cross Country – Longreach A conglomerate of beehives swarming with buzzing bees didn’t deter the large number of athletes who took on the Longreach course on Saturday. In fact, it seemed to put a spring in the step of a lot runners who ran some very fast times, especially in the long course. Being almost the end of the cross country season, it is great to see so many athletes young and not so young competing. All results and placing’s can be found on this very informative Nowra Athletics website. This Saturday there is no running in Nowra as the McCaffrey Challenge return match with the Kembla joggers is being held at West Dapto. This is a great day out with all distances catered for, there is something for everyone. A map and further information regarding this fantastic event can be found on the homepage of the club website. Please be sure to arrive before 2pm as the first events start at 2.15pm. Looking forward to seeing you there! In other news, four inspirational Nowra Athletic Club runners competed in the Sydney M7 marathon on Sunday. Scott Johnson ran the marathon of his life, finishing in a personal best time of 3 hours 4 minutes, and Peter Khourey, who is running like a demon this season, also ran a PB in an outstanding time of 3 hours 26 minutes. Evergreen Eric Moeller-Duhme came first in the male over 60 years age group, achieving a PB in a time of 3 hour 37 minutes and his partner in crime, Eva, ran a time of 5 hours 6 minutes and came second in the female over 60 years age group. Incidentally all four athletes ran the M7 marathon after running equally fantastic times in the recent gruelling King of the Mountain. Congratulations to all of you, you are all an inspiration! As the cross country season starts to wind down, don’t be in too much of a rush to pack those shoes away. The Sydney city to surf 14km race is on Sunday August 12 and the Inaugural Capital to Coast 100km event is held over the weekend of August 17 to 19. If you’re interested in being part of a team in the Capital to Coast, please call Kevyn Davis on 44478309 as soon as possible as he may have a spot for you. So keep those shoes warm, as there is plenty to keep you tapping your feet and before you know it, track and field season will be under way! New members are always welcome at the Nowra Athletics Club. For further enquiries don’t hesitate to contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226. Cross Country – Willandra With only two rounds left in the Nowra Athletics Club Nowra Toyota Point Score, Saturday saw Willandra awash with sure footed athletics ready to give their best. |
|
|
|
Conditions were cold cold cold, perfect for a day of fast cross
country running. And fast running it was. A lot of PB’s were
achieved on the day and looking back over past results, all athletes
have made massive improvements. Congratulations everyone, you all
should feel very proud! All results and placing’s can be accessed
on this Nowra Athletics Club Website. Jarvis Strand blew the other competitors out of the water in Division One of the medium course winning in a time of 16.05, a whole 2 seconds ahead of second placegetter Andrew Waters, who also ran superbly. David Tuckerman was just over a second behind Andrew, just a couple of long strides away; you’ll get him next time David! Great effort guys. Good to see Kevyn Davis and Michelle Cumming running hard in the long course, both achieving great times, all in preparation for the upcoming Capital to Coast. Michelle just edged you out this time Kevyn, are you going to let her do it at the Coast run? The gauntlet has been dropped! Once again, it was lovely to see so many littlies take part in the 1km and 2km events. Who knows, we may have some budding Olympians in our midst! |

Nowra Athletes Shine at the State Short Course Cross
Country The State Short Course Cross Country Championships were held on Saturday at Rydalmere with 15 Nowra Athletic Club runners in attendance. And a day of incredible achievements it was! Arron Spiessberger pulled out all the stops to win gold in the under 18 male 5km event, this being his 2nd state championship win this year. Arron is running a fantastic season this year and is well deserved of his success. Jade Mustapic is another athlete running exceptionally well this season and she secured bronze in the under 12 girl’s 1.5km race. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Also going home with a bronze medal in his bag was Milton Cox who represented the male 60-64 age category running 7.5km. Chrissie Suffolk ran superbly in the 5km masters event, however, a bit of bad luck ensued when a lot of the runners took a wrong turn, including Chrissie, which meant they unfortunately didn’t place. Running well to place fourth in a combined south team for the under 16 boys were Hugh Dobson, Jye Edwards and Kristin Kalemusic. The under 14 girls’ team of Shenay Edwards, Clare Dobson, Breanna O’Donnell and Jade Mustapic also placed fourth in their event, being only 2 points behind third! Representing the under 12 girls’ combined south coast team were Jessica O’Donnell and Tara and Jade Mustapic, also placing fourth. Jesse Buckham ran well in the under 12 boys 1.5km event and Jason Huntsman put in a fine effort in the Under 18 male 5km race. Maureen Cox showed she still has what it takes, running in the masters 5km event. Congratulations must go to all these outstanding athletes on such tremendous achievements. Well done everyone. Congratulations also to Leah and Bethany Dobson who set a blistering pace in the Fun Run’s with Lea winning the Bronze Medal for 3rd female in the 2.5km run and Bethany won Gold in the 1.5km Fun Fun, well done girls. Running on a cold windy afternoon may sound crazy to some, but it didn’t put off the large number of athletes who turned up for round 15 of the Nowra Toyota Point Score at Longreach on Saturday. |
|
Great to see so many mighty midgets running hard in the 1km race, setting a cracking pace and making their parents proud. Twenty five pairs of little legs took part in the out and back course with six young athletes completing the race in under 6 minutes. Leading the pack was Stirling Norwood followed closely by James Phillips, Angus Lowbridge, Zac Maher, Malachi Drury and chasing them all in was the only female, Annabella Secombe. Congratulations everyone, what a mighty effort! James Godwin ran with lightning speed to win division one of the 3km event, as did Ethan Havadjia winning division two. Interestingly, both James and Ethan have won their divisions two weeks in a row, racking up the points along the way! Come on girls, you’ll have to give them a run for their money this week! Time certainly gets away and having said that, it is only two and a half weeks until the McCaffrey Challenge return match with the Kembla Joggers at West Dapto. If you haven’t participated in this before, you should give it a go. It is an easy venue to get to and a day of friendly rivalry with the Kembla crew is guaranteed as you test out their stomping ground. It is highly recommended for a great day out. Also, don’t forget the Capital to Coast is looming closer with the weekend of August 17 to 19 being here before you know it. If you want to be part of this fantastic event, register online NOW on the Capital to Coast website or contact Kevyn Davis 447 8309 ASAP. If you want to be part of a team in the Capital to Coast be sure to let Kevyn know so he can set you up in one. To Capital to Coast News This Saturday’s run will be held at the beautiful Willandra course. The first events of 1km and 2km start at 2.30pm, so be sure to arrive at around 2pm. Cross country is family friendly and we welcome everyone of all ages and abilities. If you haven’t run cross country before, come along and give it a go, you’ll be surprised at how much fun you’ll have and you will get fit along the way. For further enquiries, contact club secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or come along on Saturday, it will be great to see you there! Comprehensive information regarding competitions, results and upcoming events are available on the informative Nowra Athletics Club website.

Cross Country – Timber Hills It was cold, it was wet and it was slippery but that didn’t deter the large number of brave athletes who decided to battle the elements and the hills of Timber hills on Saturday. And a battle of epic proportions it was! If you didn’t emerge from your race looking like the mud monster from the deep, well, you mustn’t been running hard enough! |
|
|
|
Visiting from his current locale of Texas, USA, Matt Johnson showed he still has what it takes and won the long course! Well done Matt, good to see that the dreaded jetlag didn’t stop you in your tracks! It is great to see the competitive spirit alive and well in cross country running and this was acutely demonstrated by Scott Martin on Saturday. Scott didn’t give his wife Sky the time of day as he flew past her in the long course, in anticipation of achieving a personal best! Fantastic effort Scott, and so refreshing to see that you have your priorities right! Paul Jennings put in his best effort in the medium course but alas, that didn’t stop the Strand Express aka Perry, Hayden and Jarvis passing him with locomotive speed. Look out boys, Paul will be putting in extra training this week! Well done everyone. Bronwyn Jeffries gave Timber hills everything she’s got in her race. Literally! Apparently her shoes are now the property of the Timber hills swamp. Now that is true cross country running! This Saturday’s run, which will be round 15 of the Nowra Toyota Point score will be held at the mixed terrain course of Longreach. The first events of 1km and 2km kick off at 2.30pm so be sure to arrive around 2pm. We are family friendly and cater to everyone of all ages and abilities. Looking forward to seeing you there! |
|
Hard to believe, but it is only six and a half weeks until the inaugural capital to coast! If you haven’t already registered for this fantastic event do so NOW! This is such a unique race to take part in, as you can run the whole 100kms individually or run it as part of a team, the maximum in each team being three. For all of you out there who want to be in a team but haven’t got one yet, contact Kevyn Davis on 4447 8309 ASAP and he will set you up in one. If you run the race as a team of three, each leg equates to 15km a day over two days, which is very achievable for a lot of social runners. So come along and give it a go and be one of the first to run the Capital to Coast. For further information about this extraordinary event please consult the informative capital to coast website or give Kevyn Davis a call. See you there! For any enquiries regarding the fabulous sport of cross-country please do not hesitate to contact Club Secretary Jan Gibb on 44460226. For further information regarding results and any upcoming events please visit this informative Nowra Athletics Club website.

The King of the Mountain The 38th annual Shoalhaven King of the Mountain race got off to a cold blustery start on Sunday morning with competitors bracing themselves for the 32km gruelling event. Over 140 runners took on the “King” this year and it is great to see so many athletes, young and old, challenge the mountain and beat it! Well done everyone, it is a grand effort you’ve all put in and you should all be very proud of yourselves, you are all champions. |
|

|
|
| Taking the accolades for first place this year was Lewis Ingram of Mona Vale. He ran the race in an outstanding time of 2:08:53, a whole 5 minutes ahead of the second placegetter. An amazing effort considering this is the first time he has run 32km, let alone the King of the Mountain! Michael Miles of Marot ran brilliantly to secure 2nd place in a time of 2:13:42 and local running legend Damien Smith secured his spot in the top three with a smashing time of 2:14:49, shaving 4 minutes off his 2011 time! | |
|
|
The first lady across the line was Sarah Richardson of Lyons (ACT). Sarah was second last year and despite the conditions her time of 2.29.30 was 8 seconds faster than last year and 2 seconds faster than the winners time for last year. Catherine Thrum of Turramurra backed up from last year and improved her last years result from 3rd to 2nd this year. New entrant, Corrine Fulford of Mount Hunter came in third, an incentive to enter next year. Damien Smith was the first local male home, again, a spot he knows all too well and joining him in the limelight as the first local female home in a time of 2:52:06 was young Tori Jones of Berry. This was the first time Tori had run the King, and unbelievably, her longest training run was 12km! This will be one athlete to keep your eyes on! |
|
Backing up after running or should I say climbing and winning his age division of the Glow Worm Marathon a few weeks ago, Glenn Sansom duplicated his winning style and took out the male 50-59 years in a time of 2:28:02. Glenn is running like a demon this year! Evergreen Eva Moeller-Duhme’s hard work and training paid off as she placed first in the female 60-69years category in a time of 3:48:06. A grand effort Eva. Personal bests were achieved all over the place for many Nowra runners, what a great day of achievements! Darrin Smith knocked 4 minutes off last year’s time and placed in the top 10 finishers, well done Darrin, must be all those radishes you’re growing! Scott Johnson ran outstandingly to slash 11 minutes off last year’s effort, fantastic result Scott! Peter Khourey ran his socks off to take an amazing 13 minutes off his 2011 effort, while Geoff Crook was amongst the PB crew improving by 6 minutes on his previous time. Perry Strand last ran the king in 2009 and just like that knocked 6 minutes off that time! Scott Martin decided to follow suit and slash 2 minutes off last year’s time and Eric Moeller-Duhme shaved 6 minutes off his 2011 best! Our Nowra men are running on fire! Local girls Lauren Carroll, Zahra Wells and Karen Jones ran the race for the first time this year and what a great run they had. Well done, girls, are you coming back next year? Congratulations must go to all who entered this demanding race; it is a real achievement and one to tick off the bucket list! A big thankyou goes out to all the volunteers who got the king up and running, it could not possibly have run as smoothly as it did without the awesome effort everyone put in. From administration assistants, traffic marshals, drink station attendants, computer experts, you name it, they did it! Thankyou everyone, you are all winners! Many thanks from the race organisers go to the sponsors and organisations that supported this year’s King of the Mountain. They include Nowra Toyota, Peter Rose Eyecare Plus Optometrists, Kennedy’s Buses, Shoalhaven Spring Water, Shoalhaven Community Transport, Cambewarra Public School, Kangaroo Valley Public School P&C and local members of the SES and NSW Ambulance Service.

To Cross Country Championship Photos
State Championship Cross Country medals stay home in Nowra !!! Nowra Athletics Club has once again hosted an outstanding cross country meet with the NSW Athletics State Cross Country Championships and Fun Runs held at Willandra last Saturday. There was something for everyone with State Events and Fun Runs catering for all levels of ability. It was great to see so many local runners supporting the events including the Fun Runs with the State events attracting record entries for our club with 108 keen runners. Club Patron, Rod Gibb acknowledges the efforts of so many people involved in the event from the tireless volunteers and all our athletes who competed on the day in the State races and Fun Runs making it an enjoyable and successful day. “The performances in races from the Under 12’s to the over 65’s was amazing, congratulations to those who won medals but just as important are the athletes who competed no matter what the result.” “Many would not have run at this standard before and may have run a personal best or tested themselves against the States best, no matter what their age to witness some of or champion senior runners in action was very exciting.” The Open Men’s 12km Championship event was won by Jeffrey Hunt in 38.42 who is heading to London shortly to compete in the Olympic Marathon. Jeffrey’s wife was keen for him to win this race again so he could be presented with another “Willandra” porcelain plate kindly handmade and donated by Faye Suffolk. The clubs more senior runners achieved fantastic results with plenty of smiles after their races and some great times recorded. Some of our runners also achieved State medals with the results as follows; Women: Males: Congratulations to all our athletes who participated on Saturday and thank you for your continued support of our club. This Saturdays cross country event is at Longreach. Good luck to the local athletes taking up the challenge of competing in this Sunday’s King of the Mountain. Athletics NSW State Cross Country Championships –
Willandra Hundreds of keen young athletes from Nowra Athletics Club braved the wind and cold air at the beautiful Willandra course at Cambewarra last Saturday for the NSW Athletics State Cross Country Championships. Athletes from across NSW came to be tested on the challenging Willandra course. The following junior athletes from Nowra Athletics club put in some outstanding performances on the day competing against high quality fields and proudly won an individual State Medal. This was Jesse’s first experience at a state championship level and is enjoying the challenges of racing with Nowra Athletics club. Jade was tested against the some high level competition with the winner of her race claiming a Silver medal at the National Cross Country Championships last year. This was particularly impressive as Jye was competing against athletes one year older than himself and after a string of impressive recent performances Jye is an athlete to watch in the future. Michaela Quinn continues to shine on the State stage winning a Bronze Medal in her Under 18 Championship event. Michaela has had some setbacks with recent illness so this was a particularly tough race for Michaela given the conditions on the day and an impressive effort. Arron has continued his recent great form and is looking forward to his upcoming races. Cross Country – Willandra Rain and cold weather did not deter Nowra Athletics Club members from Round 11 of the Nowra Toyota winter pointscore at Willandra last Saturday it did however reduce numbers somewhat. It is hoped that the weather will be kind next Saturday at Willandra for the Country Classic Gala Day which incorporates the Athletics NSW Cross Country Championships. Many Club members have entered the Championship events for their various age groups from under12 to over 65 years. They are reminded that they must be in Club uniform which is the Club top and black shorts or tights and have their registration numbers fixed to back and front. If they do not have complete uniform or numbers they must contact the Secretary immediately(44460226). They are further reminded that events start at 12.15 pm. They must arrive early so they can collect their timing chip which has to be fixed to the ankle. Those Club members who have not entered the Championships will not miss out on Round 12 of the winter pointscore because FUN RUNS over 1, 2 AND 4K will be conducted. THIS IS NOT A DAY TO HAVE A BREAK FROM RUNNING. The fun runs are also open to anyone interested. No age limit or age categories and lots of lucky draw prizes. The first three girls and boys 9 years and under to finish the 2k fun run will receive medals sponsored by Willandra. Fun run entry fee is $5. This annual Gala Day is the only major fund raising effort for the Club and you will be supporting the Club by entering the Fun Runs. You may also give support by assisting with some of the many jobs required that hosting a major Championship creates. Contact the Secretary again if you can assist. Full details of the program of events and start times are in the June Newsletter on this Club website.

Cross Country – Longreach Road A big crowd of enthusiastic runners turned up on Saturday afternoon to give it their best in the 10th round of the Nowra Athletics Club Nowra Toyota Point Score. And what a day of adventure it was. Fresh cool conditions are always conducive to some exciting running and that certainly was proved on the day. |

|
Lots of action in the medium course with Andrew Johnstone giving it
his all; so much so that he had a major spill during his efforts.
Not to be deterred, Andrew picked himself up, dusted himself off and
with steely determination finished the race. Good on you, AJ,
welcome back to cross country! All eyes were on James Coyte as put in a grand effort in the long course, sprinting past Dave Edwards to make it an exciting neck and neck finish. Alison Strand decided to come back to her old stomping ground of the long course and ended up doing a PB in the process. Well done, Ally, I’m wondering, did you have your roller attachments on your shoes? |
|
In other news, Nowra athletics club runners, Glenn Sansom, Zahra Wells and Laura Prince put in a superb effort to complete the inaugural Glow Worm Tunnel Marathon held at Newnes in the Blue Mountains recently. Described as a predominately bush and trail run, Zahra, Laura and Glenn were in for a surprise when they encountered the second half of the race. And it was not a surprise of the good kind. There was no running at all to be had; it was virtually extreme rock climbing for 21kms! It is very impressive that all three finished this race, I’m sure there were times they wanted to throw the towel in, but they soldiered on admirably. Zahra and Laura finished in a time of 7 hours and Glenn completed it in 51/2 hours.
Glenn also was first in the 50-59 year age category. Congratulations
Glenn, Zahra and Laura, you should be truly proud of your
achievements, as we are of you. |

It is a fantastic day of competition to be part of and also to witness some of the best runners in the state. And there is also the country canteen, famous for its pumpkin soup and sweet delights. The first event kicks off at 12 midday and all ages are catered for. Be sure to consult the Club Secretary’s newsletter on the club website for further information on this fantastic event. This Saturdays run is being held at Willandra, which is good for a pre-empt of the course before the Gala Day. Nowra Athletics Club is family friendly and welcomes everyone of all ages and abilities to come along and give cross country go. Racing kicks off at 230pm with the 1km and 2km events. Looking forward to seeing you there! "A runner must run with dreams in his heart." - Emil Zatopek

Club history was made last Saturday, 2nd June, when Nowra Athletics Club’s Open Women’s Relay team claimed the NSW State Title over 4km at the Athletics NSW State Relay Championships in Miranda. The Nowra team was up against 14 of the best teams in NSW, with only 3 of those teams from country areas and the remaining 11 teams coming from Sydney & Metropolitan areas. These Sydney clubs have a large and talented pool of athletes in which to select their representative teams. This year the club welcomed the return of our Open runners with Heather Sinclair, who also recently won the NSW State Novice Cross Country Championships Title and Elisha Bell who has been posting impressive times this season in our Saturday races. Due to availability of athletes to compete at Miranda, the decision was made to combine their talents with home grown youth and speed, with Michaela Quinn and Tori Jones stepping up from the Under 18’s division to complete this State Champion team. Club Patron Rod Gibb, and our tireless Secretary Jan Gibb swelled with pride, not just with this historic win, but when they learnt that they all had come to the event on the day to race for their club and team displaying what epitomises our club spirit. |
|
|
Left to right; Heather Sinclair, Elisha Bell, Michaela Quinn & Tori Jones |
|
|
Michaela was recovering from
recent illness, Heather nursing an injury, Tori was backing up from
a race at Willandra the day prior and Elisha made the long trip from
Ulladulla, Elisha also combined this with the balancing act of being
a mum and keeping her infant son happy and dry while she ran in the
rain. Stories like these are common amongst ALL our Nowra Athletics
Club athletes and the club is proud of each and every one of you.
Congratulations girls on your well deserved State Title and Gold
Medal win.
NSW
Cross Country Relays – Miranda - Report Nowra Athletics Club had another outstanding meet at the NSW Cross Country State Relay Championships at Miranda last Saturday. 18 enthusiastic teams competed for the club which is an achievement in itself for a country club racing against the state’s best athletes and teams in the state with the majority from the Sydney Metropolitan area. Four of the club’s teams were justly rewarded with a State medal. Nowra had a balance of experienced athletes and some competing at State level for the first time. We thank you all for the dedication to our club in competing in our representative teams and also the support crews of family and friends. A special mention also, to those athletes who travelled to support the club as reserve runners. The first race saw the Under 12 and Under 14 Boys and girls race over 2km. This race got off to a shaky start with our female runners unaware the race had started so they started their race with a 2 minute 35 second handicap, these speedy youngsters are so used to running off handicaps I think they were just trying to give their opposition a chance ! All the girls fought and raced valiantly with most of them having raced the day prior. The Under 12 girls team of Hannah Stone, Tara Mustapic, Ruby Frank, Leah Dobson all racing hard on tired young legs. Sophie Fletcher also ran this event supporting this team with a gutsy run. Also starting 2 minutes 35 seconds behind the field, the Under 14 girl’s teams of Shenay Edwards, Clare Dobson, Layne Jones and Jade Mustapic. These girls put in an amazing effort that showcased the talent of their team. Two of the team members were in the bottom age division and one athlete ran up an age division to complete the team, with all four girls having raced the day prior. Not only did they start behind the field but they made up an incredible 8 places, in the end placing 6th out of 14 teams. The effort was bittersweet for the girls when they learnt that on corrected time they were a definite Bronze medal and were well placed for Silver. The girls are already keen to take up the challenge again next year! The Under 12 Boys also put in some great efforts in their race again with some runners feeling the effects of a tough race at Willandra the day prior. Jesse Buckham, Kye Jones, Jeremy Head and Alistair Clark competed in one of the most tightly contested races of the day with a 6th place with just 38 seconds overall separating them from a bronze medal position. Alec Dobson also ran a fast first leg as reserve. The Under 14 boys faced some hot competition this year and all put in some great times, congratulations to Luke Kellett, Hugh Dobson, Cooper Thomson and Hayden Strand. The Under 16 Girls team adapted to a team change in the days leading up to this event and all the girls put in a great effort to help their team. Bridget Kellett, Kaitlyn Hush, Brielle Musgrove and Ebonie Lynch congratulations on your outstanding effort. |

The rain soaked under 16 Boys 4 x 3km Silver Medallists. Left to Right; Oscar Edwards, Jed Frank, Jye Edwards and Gus Frank. |
The Under 16 Boys A team were
well deserved winners of a Silver Medal. The team members were Jye
Edwards, Oscar Edwards and brothers Gus & Jed Frank. This medal was
particularly impressive as 3 members had not only raced the day
prior but also 3 of the team were in the bottom age category for
this division. These athletes are ones to watch in the future. It’s
great to see the depth of talent in our club with the boys racing in
this age division and our B Team of Liam Dooley, Cameron Musgrove,
Jarvis Strand and Mitchell Stahlhut all put in a huge effort in
their race. Well done to all our Under 16 Boys. The Under 18 Boys continued the medal tally for our club with some outstanding racing by the boys. The team of Aaron Spiessberger, Jason Huntsman, Tim O’Shea and Jye Edwards were worthy winners of the Bronze Medal. This team was led out by Aaron Spiessberger who set the boys in a good position with a brilliant first leg and Jason Huntsman and Tim O’Shea posted impressive times to set Jye on his way. Jye was a late inclusion in the team after having just won a silver medal for the Under 16 boys, Jye ran with gutsy determination for this team with his previous 3km race starting to look a little like a warm up with Jye coming home to secure the Bronze medal for the boys The Under 20 Boys races are always hotly contested races with most teams having the inclusion of runners competing at a State and National level. The majority of Nowra boys have proudly represented their club for many years and it was great to see this race. The team of Harry Scouller, Jyle Smith, Bradley Sawyers and Luke Harden all put in some outstanding performances finishing in 4th place just shy of the Bronze, congratulations to you all. As previously reported, the Open women’s team of Michaela Quinn, Heather Sinclair, Tori Jones and Elisha Bell wrote club history in the NSW Cross Country Relays with a Gold Medal win and State Championship Title for the girls, congratulations on your efforts ladies, very well deserved. |

It was time for the more mature men and women of our club to start racing and some were very excited as the rain had well and truly set in and the track was turning to mud. True Cross Country running conditions with a metropolitan flavour. These athletes were all supportive and encouraging of each other and a wet, muddy but enjoyable afternoon was had. The 35+ men’s and women’s divisions athletes have all been racing so well this year, that combined with plenty of enthusiasm, we were able to field 2 teams in each race. The Women’s A team of Cristine Suffolk, Kim Dobson, Kim Waters and Karen Jones all raced superbly for 4th place just shy of the bronze but a fantastic effort. The friendly banter in the B Team started well before the gun with Cathy Head leading out this team, and ably supported by Darlene Musgrove, Alison Strand and Angela Urquhart. The 35+ Men’s division A team of Damian Smith, Scott Johnson, Scott Martin and Darrin Smith were mixing it up amongst the states best with 13 teams in total competing and their 5th place saw them as the highest placed country team. The B team of Glen Mustapic, Scott Dobson, Gavin Urquhart and Geoff Crook all put in great performances with first timers Scott and Gavin enjoying their races. The 45+ women team of Annette Sampson, Donna Johnson, Sandra Coyte and Deb Clark all put in a terrific effort for their 6th place finish, well done ladies. In the largest field of the day with 20 teams competing the 45+ men’s team of Bill Stahlhut, Peter Dooley, Perry Strand and Peter Khourey were just so close to a bronze medal working so hard but just 28 seconds shy in the end but a very credible 4th place in such a large field. The 55+ mens team also lined up against a large field of 13 teams with Milton Cox, Graham Smith, and Eric Moeller-Duhme racing through the field to secure their 7th place. The women’s 55+ team of Maureen Cox, Jill Smith, Helen Redenbach and Eva Moeller-Duhme rounded out the day with another Bronze medal for the club with a well deserved 3rd place finish and another State medal for these ladies to add to their collections. Thank you to all the athletes, parents and friends for supporting this Cross Country State Relay Championships. Keep up your training and we look forward to cheering you on at the NSW State Cross Country Championships and Fun Runs at Willandra on Saturday 23rd June. For further information please go to this club website or phone club secretary Jan Gibb on 44 460226. We look forward to seeing you there.

Cross Country – Longreach Road The Bill McKinnon Memorial run (Round 8) is being held next week at Timberhills. All runners need to be there, firstly for the announcement of which distance and division is in contention for the trophy and secondly because it is one of the most picturesque cross country runs (never mind the hills) you can undertake. We are fortunate to have such majestic venues at which to run. This leads me to the following week out at Willandra (Round 9) and the Frank McCaffrey Challenge where we go up against the might of the Kembla Joggers. In order for us to win back our trophy we need as many club members to participate as possible. Members of the Illawarra Blue Stars and Wollongong Athletics will also be in attendance and we will be providing a sausage sizzle at the end of the afternoon. (If you’re free to help cook, please make yourself known to a committee member). Other upcoming events include the State Cross Country Relays at Miranda. You may have seen Peter Dooley and Mel Mustapic wandering around with clip boards. They are looking to finalise our relay teams. If you’re interested in running for your club, then track them down and give them your name. By all accounts it’s a great day (sometimes it’s sunny, sometimes it muddy) but mostly it’s just a good run. Now for a run down on week 7 - It was another glorious autumn afternoon out at Longreach. Large numbers of competitors gathered for the Nowra Toyota Point Score competition which could not be run efficiently if not for the continuous support of the volunteers each week. First of the mark was the 1 and 2 km race (a slight hiccup for the 1 kers meant some missed the start), but they still ran strong and they didn’t have the fear of being run down by the enthusiastic 2k runners as they headed out. 1st over the line this week in Div 1 saw strong running by Angus Lowbridge, Cameron Harrison and Charlotte Greenwood. Division 2 winners were Hannah Phillips, Zac Maher and Lucy Brennan. In Division 3, Bernadette Sharpe, Kiara Leslie and Boyd Schreiber were the first across the line. Other runners to watch in the coming weeks are Toby Hudson, Harriet Urquhart and Annabelle Seccombe who are sneaking up through the ranks. Most runners don’t take the time to admire the view, their focus solely on the run but it was nice to see Piper Schreiber take moment to admire the flowers. In the 2k competition, the challenge to cross the line first is fierce. This week Lou Reali, (who always runs as if he’s being chased by mischievous sprites) crossed first. Close on his heels was Leah Dobson and Campbell Thornton. The gap is constantly tightening and it may not be long before the young guns catch up. In Division 2, 1st place went to Elijah Foster-Percy, Thomas Pratt was 2nd and Alex Arnold ran a good 3rd. The 3k competition was hotly contested by 50 runners. Good handicapping meant that Thomas Robbins, Jesse Buckham and William Pratt were not too far apart as they crossed the finish line. John Bowern, Stuart Leslie and Richard Murphy took out the honours for Division 2 and Kaitlyn Hush, Chris Johnson and Nicole Morris are narrowing the gap between the divisions with wins and placings in Division 3. Others runners in this group to keep an eye on include Ethan Havadjia, Hayden Strand and It’s good to see Zac Jones out and about (although it might be a good idea to bring shoes next time Zac). The medium course at Longreach is always a fierce struggle for supremacy. Crissy Suffolk stepped up and took line honours in Div 1. Following on her heels was Jye Edwards and David Tuckerman. Angus Clark and Lucy Maron also had solid runs. The long hill at the end sorts you out but Dean Bryce, Brielle Musgrove and Christina O’Shea (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) managed to hang on and cross the line just in front of Angela Urquhart who is a very consistent runner. The Musgrove’s are looking to take out the family line honours with Cameron and Darlene crossing 1st and 2nd in Division 3. Hot on their heels was Tracey Bauert in 3rd. Helen Lucas made a return back from injury and many runners including Claire Pitkethly and Colleen Stahlhut are happy to finish and have that final grinding hill behind them. Long course runners are passionate about their sport. If you watch them finish some are even smiling. There’s no doubt about it, they are an extraordinary bunch. Scott Seccombe easily took out line honours. Mitchell Hudson (2nd) was closing the gap as was Perry Strand who has made a nice comeback after missing most of last year. Rob Pickard, Matt Brennan, James Coyte and Scott Martin were all hotly contesting Division 1. Division 2 winner this week was Pete Khourey. Brad Sawyer was hot on his heels and Kim Waters helped complete a middle order takeover (sorry guys but your handicap’s going to get hammered). To round it off, Bron Jeffrey has line honours for Division 3; Kevyn Davis couldn’t catch her and has to be happy with 2nd, followed by Kylie Stewart who ran a good 3rd. Any enquiries regarding cross country, please do not hesitate to contact club secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226. Double Gold for Nowra Athletes Two hardworking and dedicated Nowra Athletics Club middle distance runners shone on the weekend at the State Road Championships held in Homebush. Michaela Quinn ran like a demon to win the Female Under 18 years 5km State Road Championship and likewise, Aaron Spiessberger gave it his best to win the Male Under 18 years 5km Road Championship. What a spectacular effort from these young inspiring athletes. They train hard at the sport they love and the proof is in the pudding with results like these. Congratulations on a great achievement Michaela and Aaron. |

Laura Prince running the medium course on Saturday at Timberhills |
An
abundance of enthusiastic athletics took on the challenging course
running off on a “sealed handicap”, something a little different to
the regular format. A sealed handicap involves all competitors
running off “go” in their particular race category and their true
placing is calculated at the end once their sealed handicap is
revealed, thus resulting in an interesting day of running indeed.
Also adding to the interest of the day was the fact that the course
was once again run “backward” for the second time this season.
There is some conjecture amongst some of the regular competitors
that it is definitely harder this way and the hills are a lot
tougher! However, as the season is moving on, there are definite
notable improvements amongst athletes across all race categories, so
even though those hills are tough, they are being conquered. Well
done everyone. Don’t forget, all placing’s and times can be accessed
on the club website and also the Sports Scoreboard of the South
Coast Register. A date to put on everyone’s calendar is the State Cross Country Relays which are being held on Saturday June 2nd at Miranda Park Miranda. If you are interested in competing please let Club President Peter Dooley or any of the other club officials know as soon as possible so teams can be made up. If you haven’t run Miranda before, you really should give it a go. Apart from the exhilaration and camaraderie that comes with competing at a state event, you are sure to come away “mudded” up from head to toe as this course is renowned for its mud pits! Great fun indeed! |

This Saturday’s run will be held at the Longreach course, which offers a mixed variety of running terrain, including bush tracks, road running and you’ve guessed it, hills! Racing kicks off with the first events starting at 2.30pm, and any outstanding administration can be completed from 1.30pm. Newcomers are always welcome at the family friendly Nowra Athletics Club, so come along on Saturday and give it a go. You’ll make new friends and get fit along the way. Looking forward to seeing you there! For any enquiries regarding the fabulous sport of cross-country please do not hesitate to contact Club Secretary Jan Gibb on 44460226. For further information regarding results and any upcoming events please visit this informative Nowra Athletics Club website.

Club Patron Rod Gibb was the host with the most as he got the evening underway with the presentation of reports, the election of office bearers and committee persons. A huge thank you goes out to the executive/committee members, workers and volunteers who all helped in making the three competitions conducted by the Club in 2011/2012 so successful. After many years serving as club President, Kevyn Davis has decided to call it a day, as such, and retired from the position. Kevyn has worked tirelessly during his reign as President, passionately supporting the club in all its endeavours. His love of running is evident when in conversation with him; the enthusiasm just oozes out of him, infecting everyone who crosses his path with the running bug! Thank you so much for all the hard work and dedication Kevyn, it is truly admirable. On that note, a big warm welcome goes out to newly elected Club President, Peter Dooley. Congratulations Peter. Another valued committee member, Treasurer Claire Pikethly has also resigned after many years’ service due to relocating. Claire has done a fantastic job as Treasurer, making her job look effortless. In fact, it was suggested to Claire that she could still be Treasurer from her new abode, however she firmly refused, something about all the travelling being a bit of a problem. We will sorely miss Claire and wish her well in her new endeavours. With an outgoing Treasurer comes a new one, and a big warm welcome is extended to new club treasurer Alison Havadjia. Congratulations Alison. Congratulations must also go to all incoming executive and committee persons. Athletes with consistent and notable performances were recognised in all Categories and Divisions in the 2011/2012 Summer Athletics, 2011 Cross Country and Summer Road Runs competitions. Club members who received awards for consistent effort and achievement throughout the competitions included Jeremy Head (John Morris Junior Encouragement Award), Sandra Coyte (Nowra Toyota Senior Encouragement Award), and Sonja Rodda (T and F “Quiet Achiever” Award). Fantastic! Rising stars and the Club’s high achievers were officially recognised with numerous awards and record certificates. This year’s high achiever recipients were Alex Pikethly, Harry Scouller, Christine Suffolk, Aaron Spiessberger, Samantha Peace and Michaela Quinn. Congratulations everyone, well done. Running mum of four, Melinda Mustapic deservedly received the Club Person of the Year award. Melinda works tirelessly behind the scenes for the club, from organising teams for state relay events, report writing to club photographer, you name it she has done it, and all with a smile on her face! Congratulations Mel. The Neville Markham Distance Runner of the Year award went to that affable duo of running Eric and Eva Moeller-Duhme. Evergreen Eric and Eva are truly inspirational, running a myriad of long distance events between them. Eric is the master of the marathon while Eva has knocked over many a half marathon, although they both have conquered too many long distance races for this writer to remember. They are always encouraging others to give running a go, training them up and helping them achieve their first “big one”, be it the city to surf to a full marathon. Congratulations Eric and Eva. The clubs most prestigious athletic award, “The Frank McCaffrey Top Performance Award” went to two hard working athletes, Jed Frank and Lynda Douglass. Jed captured everyone’s attention with his grand effort at last year’s State Road Relay Championships where he not only ran one leg in one team, but one leg in three different age teams for Nowra Athletics Club! What true testament to the word sportsmanship! Lynda Douglass has made a name for herself with her recent outstanding efforts at the Australian Masters in Melbourne. Lynda received gold for the 60m, 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m relays for the 50 to 54years age group. Congratulations both to Jed and Lynda on such outstanding achievements. Congratulations to all who made the effort to compete and all those lucky enough to receive awards. Two remarkable club athletes were duly inducted as Life Members. They were none other than Bernie Condon and Bill Broughton. Congratulations Bernie and Bill, well deserved indeed. A special mention must go out to Darlene and Cameron Musgrove who provided the entertaining video for viewing, highlighting the various running styles of club athletes throughout the year, some quite comical indeed, the writer's included! Thanks guys! Club officials would like to thank all athletes, officials, families and friends who took part in the 2011/2012 competitions for their participation and assistance throughout the season. The evening came to a close with Club Patron Rod Gibb thanking everyone and inviting all present to stay for supper, refreshments and a friendly chat. With the Cross Country Season well under way many of the Club’s runners are in full training mode for the competition. With the Willandra Country Classic (23rd June), Shoalhaven King of the Mountain (1st July) and the inaugural Capital to Coast (17th -19th August) coming up soon the Club’s long distance runners are keen to be in top shape. I’m sure the streets of the Shoalhaven will be a sight of running feet over the next few months as athletes up their training schedule. Be sure to encourage them and maybe even join them, making this year your year to achieve” the big one”. Until the then, tighten up those laces and “carry on”. |

News Report A big number of runners attended Round 4 of the Nowra Athletics Club Nowra Toyota Winter Pointscore events at the Longreach course last Saturday. Over 220 runners took part over the various courses on a great afternoon weatherwise. The cool overcast conditions seemed to bring out the best in many with some good times recorded. All of the Club’s running venues have now been used and by now Club Officials are hopeful that the runners and their supporters are becoming familiar with the system and procedures for conducting a competition at various venues for such a large number of competitors. Divisions have been created for the 2k, 3k, Medium Distance and Long Distance courses and handicaps are calculated for those divisions based on performance and the number in each division. As people improve some changes in Divisions may be made. By now runners hopefully have decided which distance they will compete in so it is important to let Officials know if they wish to change. Check this website Notice Board on Saturday morning for any important messages. It is also very important to check the notice board at the running venue as it has all the information needed. Next Saturday April 28th we return to the Willandra course for Round 5. Administration from 1.30 pm with the running to start at 2.30pm. Following the afternoon of running the Club will conduct its’ Fifty Second Annual General Meeting and Presentation Night at Illaroo Road Public School 7.30 pm. The annual report will be presented, Office Bearers for the ensuing year will be elected and awards covering 2011/12 winter and summer competitions will be presented. All are welcome of course particularly new Club members. Supper follows the presentation and club members are requested to bring a plate of supper to share
