Cross Country Presentation & Fun Run
Saturday 30th August, 2008

Runners and their families from the Nowra Athletics Club had a wonderful afternoon for the final Cross Country outing for 2008 at Willandra on Saturday.

Club members had the opportunity to take part in 2km and 4km team fun run events. There were no handicaps but everyone who ran was part of one of three teams - red, blue or green. This year's fun run had team members complete the course with a mad pea count and a spirited egg and spoon finish.

The top three runners in the Nowra Toyota Pointscore 2km event, Division (1a) for 2008  - Liam Rayner, Hayden Strand and Wade Garin at the Fun Run and Presentation on Saturday at Willandra.

An entertaining presentation followed where all cross country runners received certificates for their involvement and participation. Congratulations go to all divisional winners in the Nowra Toyota Pointscore Competition and to the fastest male and female runners in each division. A full rundown of points and placings is available on the Club website and the results section of the paper.

Of course every person who spent some time at cross country this year was a winner. And as everyone knows, getting a win quite often requires a lot of hard work from the individual as well as a lot of other people. In that vein, a big thank you goes to all officials and volunteers who assisted the club throughout the 2008 Cross Country season.

Once again Rod & Jan Gibb deserve special mention for their tireless efforts for the Club and for making their family property such a wonderful place to experience cross country running.

Cross Country at Jervis Bay
Saturday 23rd August, 2008

The white sandy beaches and beautiful scenery of Jervis Bay were just two of the many outstanding features of the Nowra Athletics Club's Cross Country “Mystery Run” held at Moona Moona Creek on Saturday afternoon.

Race officials prepared the courses to perfection making full use of the local walking tracks and sandy beaches. Runners were also guaranteed the opportunity of chocolate prizes on completion of their events. With an offer like that no wonder so many families and runners made the effort - despite the freezing cold conditions.

The young and young at heart had a go in the 2.5km fun run while the slightly more seasoned medium and long course runners took part in the 6km event. Both runs were friendly affairs with all runners taking in the sights and enjoying the social aspects.

Next week will be the Club's final cross country event for the year and will be held at Willandra, Browns Mountain Road, Cambewarra. Club officials are planning two “Pairs” social fun runs (2.30pm start) followed by a presentation ceremony for members who took part in the 2008 Nowra Toyota Winter Pointscore Competition.

The pairs fun run will no doubt provide a few laughs and the social gathering afterwards will give everyone the opportunity to catch up after another successful year of cross country running.

Cross Country Report

16th August, 2008

The final afternoon of competition in the Nowra Toyota Winter Pointscore took place at the Forest course, Woolamia on Saturday. It was a fantastic afternoon with plenty of runners and their families in attendance – all making the most of the cooler weather and the beautiful bush courses.

Before competition got under way Club Secretary Jan Gibb and Club President Kevyn Davis made some announcements about our latest NSW Representatives, Michaela Quinn and Jake Ring. Both runners will be taking part in the upcoming Australian All Schools Cross Country Championships.

The Nowra Athletics Club is keen to support its members who achieve State and National selection. The Club presented both athletes with cheques on Saturday to help towards some of their expenses. Everyone at the Club knows they will return better for the experience and wish them the best of luck.

Jan Gibb presents Michaela Quinn with a cheque.

In the first event Division 1a 2km runners Liam Rayner, Gus Stretton and Hayden Strand finished off a good season with another win – well done boys. In a very close finish in the Division 1b race Mathew Schofield came in just ahead of Courtney Harrison and Ava Jeffrey. The Division 2 race saw cross country newcomer James Batson lead the field home while Simone Foggo and Samantha Jeffrey both had great races. Following her form on Saturday Division 3 runner Kate Crutch was singled out by race observers as one to watch for next season – great effort!

In the 3km event State Cross Country Representative Michaela Quinn had the biggest handicap and was therefore the last to start.

However, her determination and competitive spirit came to the fore eventually seeing her win the race by the slimmest of margins. Placegetters Bradley Sawers and Jordan Janos gave it all they had and will certainly be athletes of some note in the very near future.

Medium Course runners left nothing to chance in their 5.6km race. In Division 1 Rose Dooley was the best in the season closer finishing just ahead of Perry Strand and Crissie Suffolk. Andrew Johnstone dusted off a few cobwebs to finish first in Division 2 while husband and wife combination Graham and Jill Smith came in next for second and third. In Division 3 Colleen Stahlhut showed the benefits of her recent training program coming home in first place while Di Ozolins and Darline Musgrove also finished ahead of the pack for the points.

In the Long Course race back marker Jake Ring came within a few seconds of eclipsing the whole field in an extremely close finish in Division 1. Bill Stahlhut and Linda Weatherill just managed to hang on over the last few hundred metres to hold him back to third place. In Division 2, Kevyn Davis, Gary Bowen and Paul Jennings proved far too strong over the distance, coming home well clear for the racing honours.

The Pointscore competition has now come to a close, however the Club has organised two more weeks of social cross country running to finish off the season.

Next week a couple of fun runs have been organised at Moona Moona Creek Huskisson. Runners and their families are asked to meet at the parking area at Moona Moona Creek on Saturday 23rd August for a fun run start time of 2.30pm.

The following week will be the last cross country event for the year and will be held at Willandra. A picnic style race afternoon is planned with a fun run and presentation of Cross Country certificates.

For all those interested in the great family sport of athletics the Nowra Athletics Club conducts an “evening” athletics competition from September through to late February. It’s open to all comers – regardless of age and or ability.

The Summer Athletics Competition starts on Wednesday 10th September at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex (behind Shoalhaven High School). Additional enquiries can be made by contacting Club Secretary Jan Gibb on 44460226 or visiting the club website (www.nowraathleticsclub.org.au).

Running teams from Nowra Athletics Club were in a class of their own at the State Road Relay Championship held in Wollongong on the weekend winning four silver medals and two bronze.

The Club entered ten teams spanning age groups from the U/12's through to the 55+ categories. Six of the teams won medals and the other four were placed in the top ten in their respective races making this State Road Relay Championships one of the best for the Club in many years.

In the U/12 Boys race the “A” team, consisting of Blake Foggo, Wade Garin, Jordan Janos and Gus Stretton combined superbly finishing in second place. Wednesday, July 16, 2008

A FANTASTIC weekend of athletic endeavour for Nowra Athletics Club members with Cross Country running at the Timberhills course on Saturday and the 34th Shoalhaven King of the Mountain on Sunday.

The Shoaihaven King of the Mountain was a resounding success for all involved.

Many of the club's athletes performed extremely well in the arduous 32km endurance event.

Local Jon Schol pulled another rabbit out of the hat in a brilliant display of strategic racing to be the first Nowra Athletics Club runner to cross the finish line at the Kangaroo Valley Show ground.

Damian Smith and Mat Kinsele came in a few minutes later to complete a trio of local men who all finished in the ten.

Congratulations to Alison Strand who was the first local female home and also to Tammy Jones who had an excellent time in her age category running against many fine Sydney based runners.

Kevyn "The King"  Davis finished his 33rd Shoalhaven King of the Mountain on Sunday morning in a time that many athletes 30 years his junior would be proud of.

Organisers of the event thanked Nowra Toyota, Shoalhaven Spring Water, Nowra Sportspower and Peter Rose Optometrist for their generous support.

Special mention also goes out to all the volunteers, friends and helpers of the Nowra Athletics Club who donated their time and helped make the event such a friendly affair.

Cross-country runners had a field day at the Timberhills course at Tomerong on Saturday.

A cooling afternoon breeze made for light relief in almost perfect conditions for both fast racing and enjoyable family time.

It was a family day indeed, certainly in the top three positions. The Brindle, Jeffrey, Munro, Smith, Stahlhut and Witenden clans featured prominently in several events.

It was good to see Laura Daley back in town for the weekend, she was obviously in good form too - picking up first place in Division 2 of the medium course.

In the 3km event Sharna Boughton and Julie Harrison had fantastic races, both girls finished well ahead in their divisions.

The long course event saw Alex Pitkethly take up the challenge in Division 1 reeling in all front markers to finish ahead of Bill Stahlhut and Linda Weatherill.

Cross Country Report
Wednesday, 9th July, 2008

RUNNERS and their families were treated to another fantastic afternoon of beautiful Shoalhaven weather at the forest on Saturday.

There was a large turnout of club runners and quite a number of visiting families who enjoyed the great out doors and the picturesque bush style running tracks.

Many of the regulars were in top form and all appreciated the changes made to the courses from previous seasons.

Long course participants relished the opportunity to go around the 5.6km track twice in their race.

In division one Huskisson runner Steve McCullagh warmed up quickly in the first lap and came home like a bullet to cross the line well ahead of place getters Bill Stahlhut and Fabian Witenden.

In division two Tracey Pratt took advantage of an early break and continued on through to the finish claiming first place.

Further back Jack Robertson and Gary Bowen both experienced long course veterans, threaded their way through the field for second and third.

The club's 2km runners were full of enthusiasm once again and all showed plenty of determination throughout the race. As usual many of the placings were decided in the final few metres before the finish line.

This weeks division one contest saw girls Bridget Kellett and Annika Janos win A and B events just ahead of Hayden Strand, Brendan Kellett, Lauren Stahlhut, Leonie Foggo and Ava Jeffrey.

In division two all the mums were out in force with Ruth Pearson, Simone Foggo and Gillian Quinn showing the younger crew how it's done. Great effort girls.

In the 3km event Michaela Quinn edged ahead to win the division one race while Shama Boughton and Bradley Sawyers both ran strongly for second and third. Mitchell Stahlhut, Les Gernyi and Holly Bond showed plenty of class to out manoeuvre the field winning the division two contest.

Medium course runners knew it wasn't going to be easy on Saturday with all those hills and extra ground to cover. But as we've come to expect from this bunch they all loved it — especially the long long long hill up to the finish line.

In division one Nathan Weatherill applied the pressure early and kept up a solid pace to win ahead of Elise Russell and Rose Dooley.

In the division two race Jeff Dinning, Galen Davitt and Alex Witenden showed the benefits of a few extra training sessions by taking the first three places.

Cross Country Fun Run Report
Saturday, 28th June, 2008

Runners and their families had a fantastic afternoon of Cross Country fun at the Timberhills Course on Saturday for it was time again for the Club “Pot Luck Pairs” day.

The name of the event may sound as though the leprechauns are out and about but the truth was everyone who was there had a great time.

All runners were paired up via a lucky draw and each raced as a team with their partner. Handicaps still applied which meant at some point the two runners would meet and then have to cross the finish line together.

There were plenty of laughs and some absolutely remarkable efforts from many runners. It's quite amazing what people can do when there's a reason for doing it well.

In the 2km event this year's big winners in Division 1 were Yolanda Van Arkel and Mathew Schofield while in Division 2 Katrina Ward and Anthony Chater were first to cross the line.

The 4.5km event saw Scott Foggo and John Tallon sprint home for first place in Division 1. In Division 2 Carmel Quinten and Lisa Carroll gave a gritty performance crossing the line just ahead of a large group of teams. Well done girls!

Regarding the Club's outstanding results and organisation of the Willandra Country Classic State Championships held recently.

Tarlou Smith, Myke Cunningham and Spot sprinting to the finish line in the "Pot Luck" pairs.

The Management Committee of the Nowra Athletics Club would like to thank all members, relatives and friends for their help and assistance in making the Willandra Country Classic such a resounding success.

An important date for your diaries is Sunday 27th July. There will be a social gathering and run to celebrate Kevyn Davis's 60th birthday. Stay tuned for further details and venue location.

Another upcoming event (Sunday 13th July) run by the Nowra Athletics Club is the world renowned Shoalhaven King of the Mountain. The “King” as it’s known locally, travels from the quiet rural village of Cambewarra via a series of bitumen and gravel roads to Kangaroo Valley Showground. A distance of some 32 kilometres (32km) that takes in the best sights and native sounds of the local area.

For entry forms and further inquiries go to www.kingofthemountainnowra.org.au or contact Doug Jeffrey

Best wishes to all Club runners entering the State Championships and bets of luck to all runners in the Fun Runs.

Back at the local scene the regular Nowra Toyota Winter Pointscore Competition on Saturday was transferred to the Longreach Course because of very wet conditions at Timberhills. Fortunately most runners and their families checked the website (www.nowraathletics.org.au) and were aware of the change in venue.

In the 2km and 3km events the Clubs younger runners totally outclassed the seniors with a clean sweep of all major placings in every division. The 2km winners were Kyla Davidson, Angus Lowbridge, Kate Crutch, Gabriel Garin, Samantha Jeffrey, Ruth Pearson, Briony Munro, Hamish Heald, Rhianna Tuckerman, Liam Rayner, Wade Garin and Gus Stretton.

Timberhills Cross Country Running Report

24th May, 2008

Cross country runners were treated to another fantastic afternoon of cross country running at the Timberhills course, Tomerong on Saturday.

Before the racing started club members and their families were introduced to long distance running legend Neville Markham. A man who was for most of his running career one of Australia’s best and in the latter years his performances were certainly world class.

Neville was on hand on Saturday to present the Neville Markham Award for Outstanding Long Distance Performance to runner Damian Smith for his monumental achievements in 2007. Congratulations and well done!

Talking of achievements athletes from the Nowra Athletics Club were out in force recently in the Nations capital, competing in the Canberra Half Marathon. As usual the Club was well represented with over 30 entrants out there facing the elements in what turned out to be a very cold Canberra day.

All athletes who ran the 21km course around Lake Burley Griffin competed with distinction several runners including Lucia Vernon, Kevyn Davis and Lou Reali had a sensational “half”! First locals home were Mat Kinsele and Linda Weatherill both recording very respectable times given the conditions on race day.

The short course racing at Tomerong on Saturday was in a class of its' own and the younger members of the Club were in complete control.  In the Division 1 race (2km) the lead changed hands several times as the quicker and more determined runners chased down the front markers. The race was only settled in the last 200 meters where Hayden Strand and Alistair Clark just managed to edge ahead from Liam Dooley and Ava Jeffrey. Excellent work gang!

Another exciting moment was in the finish of the 3km event. Division 1 runners Mia Davidson, Yolanda Van Arkel and Yasmin Smith were at full stretch in the straight with crowd cheering and a finish line fast approaching. All girls gave it their all and completed the event in style – brilliant!

In the Medium course event Division 2 runner Cathy Rodden took the lead early and showed a lot of determination up the back hills which eventually paid off giving her a clear run to the finish line. Further back Grant Williams applied plenty of pressure to the legs through the wooded sections of the course to come home for second place while Galen Davitt had another fine performance finishing in third place.

Long course regulars Damian Smith, Paul Davidson and Jon Schol made it all look easy once again in their event. However younger runners Hamish Gorman, Alex Pitkethly and Patrick Ozolins kept them honest with a great chase over the two laps. Scott Martin, Ed Egan, Danny Dawes and Lisa Carroll were in good form on Saturday finishing well up the results sheet. All in all another great weekend of cross country running.

In other athletic news runners from the Nowra Athletics Club will be competing in the State Cross Country Relays at Miranda on the weekend. The Club is fielding a large number of teams and is confident of victories in several categories. Go Nowra go, go, go!

Another point of interest for most is the Nowra Athletics Club website (www.nowraathleticsclub.org.au). Cross Country Report
21st May,2008

Athletes who attended ross country running at Willandra last Saturday (17-05-08), had the worst of the Autumn weather so far this year - it was bitterly cold with blustery winds and driving rain. Despite the conditions or because of the conditions, Club members who were there had the best afternoon’s run in a long, long time.

The 3km race saw the return to form of many the Club's short distance specialists with Amanda Robbins winning Division1 and Dane Bowen taking first place in Division 2. Jill Tuckerman, Erin Poulton, Anna Schipp and Olivia Coles relished the cooler conditions featuring prominently throughout the race.

In the 2km event Hayden Strand, Daniel Quinten and Gillian Quinn won their respective Divisions with strong running and good hill climbing skills. Other runners who performed well included Troy Brindle, Bridget Kellett, Katelyn Hush, Aiden Chater, Zoe Chater and Ruth Pearson.

It's that time of the year again - the NSW Cross Country Championships are coming to the Shoalhaven! On Saturday June 21st the Nowra

The "Country Classic" as it’s known, is a fabulous event for the Club and gives our members and anyone else in the area the opportunity to see some great running. The Club also organises a number of fun runs on the day for everyone to enjoy.

To make the day a success we need the help of Club members. We are asking for as much assistance as we can get - many hands make light work. None of the jobs are difficult or demanding and there are plenty of experienced hands within the Club's Management Committee to make it easy for any helpers.

So, if you would like to contribute and have an hour or two spare on Saturday 21st June please come forward and speak to any Committee person, send an e-mail or contact Club Secretary Jan Gibb 4446 0226. We would love to hear from you.

Timberhills Cross Country Running
7th May, 2008

Round 6 of the Nowra Toyota Winter Poinstscore on Saturday, 3rd May, saw over two hundred cross country runners of all ages, accompanied by their families, taking part in a fantastic afternoon of cross country running at the Timberhills Course in Tomerong.

In the first event of the day a racing clock malfunction caused a false start in the 2km race. Luckily the GO runners were only 50 metres or so down the track when the error was discovered which made it much easier for race officials to restart the race without any delays.

A short time after the start of the 2km race, young runners Wade Garin, Zac Stahlhut and Liam Rayner were at full stretch down the straight finishing first in Division 1.  In Division 2 Peter Heald set a blistering pace in the early stages and took line honours - no doubt alerting the handicapper of his return to form. Further back Annika James and Ruth Pearson were next in, while racing newcomer Rhys Burinaga had a great run also. Division 3 runners Ella Pratt, Oliver Lockey and Ryan Lowbridge were deserved winners in their race.

A determined Braedon Gernyi led all 3km runners through the shoot to claim victory in Division 1, while Zac Jones and Michael Thompson ran well for second and third. In Division 2 Les Gernyi produced another solid performance with a top three position sharing the podium with Katie Schipp and Colleen Stahlhut.

Medium course Division 1 runners Brendon Wood, Jyle Smith and Ben Shepherd posted very quick times picking up first, second and third respectively. Close competition in the Division 2 contest saw Galen Davitt narrowly beat seasoned performers Graham Smith and Tammy Jones. In Division 3 Alex Witenden came in just ahead of Carmel Quinton and Bronwyn Jeffrey to complete the Medium Course round up.

In the Long Course event on Saturday Graham Anderson got away early to set up a hard fought victory in Division 1 while Mat Kinsele and Alex Pitkethly both ran well for the placings. In Division 2 Doug Jeffrey was first just ahead of birthday girl Michelle Smith and newcomer Scott Lockley.

All in all another great weekend of cross country running.

Sky Martin, proud winner of the 2008
Ian Henry Encouragement Award

Further to last weekend's AGM and Presentation evening two girls who deserve another round of applause for receiving the Club's Junior and Senior encouragement awards are Indiana Van Arkel and Sky Martin. Cross Country running at Longreach on the weekend saw a number of the Club's emerging athletes come to the fore in several events.

Medium Course runner Deb Clark got out early in the Medium course race and lead the field up the home stretch to finish in front while back markers Pat Davitt and Julie Evans made up good ground for second and third.

In Division 2 Rose Dooley made the most of the flat section of the course, eventually reeling in the competition over the final 2kms to take line honours. Further back Lucia Vernon and John Price showed off their racing skills picking up the minor placings.

In Division 1 new Club runners Mick McDonell and Brendon Wood had a very close race finishing in the top two while Perry Strand showed good form to come home in third place.

Mushy and trying conditions in the 3km event were no barrier for youngsters Braedon Gernyi, Zac Jones and Jarvis Strand who finished in top three positions. Great running saw Kate Knight, Kirsty McDonell and Colleen Stahlhut come in well ahead of the pack in the Division 2 race.

Saturday's 2km event was well attended and saw a good cross section of runners of all ages and abilities. Weekend Cross Country  Report
Saturday, 12th April, 2008

ROUND three of the Nowra Toyota pointscore had Nowra Athletics Club members at the Timberhills course at Tomerong last Saturday and some fine running took place.

Fine handicapping was also a feature of the events with all courses recording close finishes.

In division one of the long course for example the back markers got through the field to take the major positions, but they only made up the handicap in the last half kilometer in the 9.2km race.

Mat Kinsele off 6.30 was first home followed by the back bunch who was on 10.10 to 11.50 behind.

Jake Ring second, Hamish Gorman third, Paul Davidson fourth, Jon Schol fifth and Damian Smith sixth.

These lads finished within 35 seconds. Fine running, fine handicapping an old bloke was heard to say!

Division 2 of the long course went to Alison Strand ahead of Ed Egan and Danny Dowers.

The medium course of 4.6km also featured two divisions and division 1 went to Perry Strand from Jyle Smith, who was one of the back markers, and Tom Marshall.

Division 2 went to Deano Bryce from Galen Davitt and Lauren Carroll who were closely followed by some of the back markers Rose Dooley, Cathy Head and Graham Smith who were only seconds apart.

Division 3 went to Jasmine Jones from Ozzie Bailey and Sky Martin.

Only nine seconds separated the top three in Division 1 of the 3km event won by Yolanda van Arkel from Jarvis Strand and Jordan Janos, while Moruya Henderson, one of the back markers, was only three seconds away in fourth place.

Division 2 went to Tanya Heald ahead of Jack Tuckerman and Kate knight.

A good cross section of mums, dads and kids keenly contest the 3km races.

The 2km featured three divisions and again across section of runners raced with great keenness. Division 1 went to the front runners this time with go marker Zoe Wittenden finishing clear of Tye Martin and Murray Schofield.

In Division 2 Cameron Musgrove was first home from Lauren Stahlhut and Aiden Chater who made up a lot of ground from the back mark.

Division 3 saw some adults get among the young folks with Julia Brindle being the winner from Peter Heald whose crook foot seems to be recovering, and Ryan Lowbridge.

As that old bloke said a fine day’s running .

Important Administration - Some important matters for runners to note.

Weekend Cross Country  Report
Saturday, 5th April, 2008

To - Photo of the Week

Cross country runners were at it again on the weekend, out there in the glorious sunshine enjoying life and having fun.

As is usual at this time of year there was no shortage of runners in any of the events. Club officials were at full stretch in the 3km, 4km and 8km races and were appreciative of the refreshments available from the Country Canteen.

The Nowra Toyota Winter pointscore on Saturday saw many of the more astute competitors taking full advantage of the somewhat light early season handicaps.

No doubt handicap and Divisional changes will be the "norm" over the coming weeks to enable runners of differing ability to catch up and make results in each event more interesting.

A man who's always interested in exercise and having a go is seventy six year old Bill Rogan. On Saturday Bill said he wanted to ease his way into running this year and decided to start out in the 2km race and eventually work up to his regular 4km event. Well start he did, but taking it easy wasn't part of the agenda. Bill got away early and despite their best efforts none of the more fancied Div 3 runners had a hope of catching him.

Other 2km runners making a great start on Saturday were Liam Dooley, Briony Munro and Jack Stokes in Div 1 while Joel Brindle, Luke Kellett and Hamish Heald were first to cross the line in Div 2.

New runners to the Club, Bradley Sawers, Sharna Boughton and Jordan Janos made a great statement with top three placings in Div 1. In Div 2 Erin Poulton came in just ahead of fellow youngsters Jack Tuckerman and Mitchell Stahlhut.

It must have been the day for new club members to win on Saturday. Recently signed runner, Tom Marshall held out late challenges from speedsters Jyle Smith and Peter Dooley to win the Div 1 contest in the 4km Medium course event. Congratulations on a fantastic result!

Famed course shortening specialist Dean Bryce got away with a win in the Div 2, 4km race narrowly beating Lucia Vernon and Cathy Johnson to the finish line. In Div 3 Rebekah Brindle opened her pointscore account with a win while Graham Thompson and Terry Bailey came home in a flurry for second and third place respectively.

The 8km Long Course event bought out the best in many of the Clubs' distance runners on the weekend. Jake Ring took up the challenge and reeled in the field coming home strongly in the last kilometre for a clear victory in Div 1. Eric Moeller-Duhme and Milton Cox both maintained a strong pace throughout the two laps to finish second and third. Jo Warren normally a Medium Course runner showed her versatility by winning the Div 2 event while Paul Jennings and Chris Davies chased hard for the placings.
