Summer Athletics Report
Wednesday, 11th March, 2009

A great time was had by all at the conclusion of the Summer Athletics competition for 2008/09 on Wednesday.

All the races and field events were well attended including the 800 metre handicap final. There were also plenty of laughs through out the evening and the season finished on a high note with social a Barbeque afterwards.

Close finish – Jarvis Strand, Brielle Musgrove and Claire Pitkethly using every muscle in a 100 metre handicap event on Wednesday at Summer Athletics.

I’ve said it countless times over the past few years and I still think the same - Athletics is a fantastic sport! It’s great for the mind and just the best thing for your body.

In the local competition you don’t have to be a world beater or even slightly talented you just need to turn up and have a go. At the Nowra Athletics Club there’s a stack of friendly people ready to put a hand out to help you along. So if you’re like me (not very talented) and you enjoy being outside, in the company of good friends then come and join the Nowra Athletics Club.

The next athletic event on our yearly calendar is our Cross Country Competition which starts on the 21st March at the Willandra course, Brown’s Mountain Road, Cambewarra.

Administration and registrations will be from around 2.30pm with the first event starting at around 3.30pm. Make the effort and you’ll enjoy an afternoon with family and friends.

For all runners wishing to continue with their weekly run or for those who want to start their training campaign before the Cross Country season begins - a social run has been organised for Saturday afternoon at Vincentia.

The run, organised by Kevyn and Crew, will be a 6km (a new course) handicap event starting from the Plantation Point car park, Vincentia. All participants should gather at 4.15pm for announcements and handicaps with the race starting at 4.30pm sharp.

In other Club news the Cancer Council fundraiser evening at Tammy’s on Saturday night went over with a bang. Rumour has it that half of Nowra was blacked out when Patrick Ozolins and Alison Strand went for the high notes in a Singstar rendition of “You don’t bring me flowers - anymore”. Well done to Tammy Jones, Andy Dupree, Lisa Carroll, Alison Strand and the many others who helped make the night a resounding success.

While we’re on the subject of fundraisers Scott and Sky Martin have organised a Social Cricket Match to support the Caner Council’s Relay for Life. It’s on Sunday 15th March at the Nowra Showground starting at 10am. Bring along family and friends, neighbours, work mates and anyone else for that matter. For further details contact Scott or Sky on 0400 888 498.

Summer Athletics Report
for Wed. 25th Feb. 09, Newspaper

After a week of heavy rain the Ron Brown Sporting Complex was deemed unfit for competition at the Summer Athletics Competition last Wednesday evening.

Naturally most of the Club’s officials and athletes were very disappointed with the situation. Especially considering that it was to be the second last evening of athletics for the current season.

None the less life goes on and there’s plenty more activities to look forward to in the athletic sphere. Tonight’s competition will be the final night for Summer Athletics 2008/2009.

The featured events are designed to put some fun into the evening and will see several surprise races for the young and young at heart.

To celebrate some great achievements and to have a few laughs with friends the Club has organised a Barbeque after tonight’s events. Everyone’s invited so make sure you come along!

For those runners who enjoy the great outdoors, Nowra Athletics Club’s Cross Country Season commences on Saturday 22nd March at “Wilandra”, Browns Mountain Road, Cambewarra. Further announcements with details will be made over the coming weeks!

Another annual event organised by the Nowra Athletics Club is the “Shoalhaven King of the Mountain” - a 32km (20 mile) endurance event that sees participants run from Cambewarra over Mt Scanzi finishing at the Kangaroo Valley Showground. This year the race will be on Sunday 5th July – for further details check out the website at www.kingofthemountainnowra.org.au.

Summer Athletics Report
18th February, 2009

It was a fantastic evening for athletes and their families at Summer Athletics on Wednesday, the cooler conditions were perfect and the Club Handicap races were on.

The first event for the night was the 60 metre sprints which gave everyone the opportunity to limber up before the start of the 100 metre handicap heats. After the heats were completed athletes were directed to the field events while officials tallied results and set the fields for the A and B finals.

Both finals were decided by the narrowest of margins and saw two of the Club’s young stars Sarah de Vries and Sarah Godwin winners of this year’s titles. Angus Clarke and Scott Martin picked up second places while Lisa Carroll and Lauren Carroll showed plenty of speed in their finals for third.

For all runners who didn’t make the finals last week consolation finals are on tonight at Summer Athletics.

The 1500 metre handicap event bought out the best in everyone with many of the Club’s runners providing season best times in a hard fought race. After starting from the back Patrick Ozolins thread his way through the field and finished in style with a sprint up the straight for first place. Sarah Godwin and Jarvis Strand excelled way beyond expectations finishing in second and third positions – well done!

There are only two more weeks of competition for the 2008/2009 Summer Athletics season. To celebrate some great achievements and to have a few laughs with friends the Club has organised a Barbeque after tonight’s events. Everyone’s invited so make sure you come along!

The competition tonight will feature several hurdle events and a number of fun and interesting races. Don’t forget the “consolation” 100 metre Handicap final will be on just before the Barbeque.

This Wednesday (18 February) Summer Athletics will be held at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, Nowra East (behind Shoalhaven High School) with administration and announcements from 5.45pm. Events start at 6.00pm. sharp.

For more information on results, upcoming events, tack conditions and or cancellations visit the Club website (www.nowraathletics.org.au or just Google Nowra Athletics Club).

Athletics Report
11th February, 2009

THE second week of the Nowra Athletics Club’s Summer Team Challenge produced more good quality performances.

A good leap of 7.93 metres by Lynda Douglass inthe triple jump gave her a new record.

The 1km handicap again produced fine running by many competitors. It seems that handicaps bring out the best.  Peter Dooley took out the event from Tammy Jones and Scott Martin.

Peter and Scott were off the back mark and managed to get through the field only in the last 100 metres. In a good feat of handicapping all 21 competitors finished within 54 seconds.

The team pointscore after two weeks has the South Easterners ahead after scoring 2066 and 112 to the North Westerners 1906 and 1834 in the senior division, while in the juniors North West is well ahead 926 and 457 to South East 102 and 225.

The seniors look to be in for a tight struggle, however more competitors are needed in the juniors by the South East.

If you have not returned to the track after the Christmas break, now is the time to do it. Tonight the handicaps will continue with a 1500 metres to start the program. A variety of field events and the club 100 metres handicap heats and finals for Division 1 and 2.

These are the annual handicaps, which receive trophies on presentation night. The annual 800 metres handicap will be next week.

Events start at 6pm at the Ron Brown Athletics Complex.

Summer Athletics Report
28th January, 2009

The Nowra Athletics Club had fantastic results at the NSW Country Championships held in Campbelltown over the Australia Day weekend.

The Club was well represented in both male and female categories across a broad range of events. The Club’s athletes gave each race, throw and jump every ounce of energy they could muster.

Linda Weatherill on her way to a win in the 1500m final at the State Country Championships.

It was great to see so many of the Club’s newer families (Webb, Musgrove and Nolan/Fuller families) enjoying the Championships and making the most of the varied competition.

On the results side local sprint sensation Kristi-Lee Taylor ran brilliantly claiming silver medals in the 100 and 200 metre events.  Later in the meet she showed her versatility by winning a silver medal in the 90 metre hurdles.

Josh Byron had an absolute field day winning gold in the U12 boys 100m sprint and Shot Put events and silver medals in the 200m, Long Jump and Discus contests.

Fifteen year old Harvey Campbell was in a class of his own on the weekend winning eight medals in total (1 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze).

Peter Dooley had another outstanding race in the 50-59 yr men’s 800m event successfully defending his title as State Country Champion.

Talented athlete Sarah de Vries showed plenty of courage and determination in her races winning silver in the 200m, bronze in the 100m and finishing in the top five in the 400 and 800m events. Well done!

Our 30-39 yr men’s team kept the gold flowing with wins from Paul Musgrove (Long Jump), Scott Martin (5000m) and Mat Young(100m). David Webb combined well with Mat and Paul to achieve the old 1,2,3 in the 100m final.

Christy Webb threw for gold in the Javelin while Crissie Suffolk (30-39) and Linda Weatherill (40-49) claimed the 1500m titles.

Alex Pitkethly ran a very good time in the 18/19yrs Men’s Steeple adding another gold medal to his collection. Seasoned campaigner Bernie Condon was simply too good for anyone else to catch him in the 60+ Men’s 100m event winning gold for the umpteenth year in a row!

Club officials would like to thank all athletes and their families for their efforts and support at the 2009 State Country Championship. It was a successful meet by any measure - we hope to see you there again next year.

The local Summer Athletics competition is in full swing for 2009. To make the evenings a little more interesting officials have added a number of new and varied events for everyone to enjoy - come along and have some fun.

This Wednesday (28th January) Summer Athletics will be held at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, Nowra East (behind Shoalhaven High School) with administration and announcements from 5.45pm. Events start at 6.00pm. sharp.

New members are always welcome. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Summer Athletics Report
21st January, 2009

With a slight easing in the temperature on Wednesday evening athletes at Summer Athletics were able to run at full pace in the opening 600 metre handicap event.

Officials were surprised by the outstanding efforts in the first race of the night which saw personal best times broken by many of the competitors. Patrick Ozolins started from the back and overcame the whole field of runners to claim a well earned victory. A few moments later veteran athlete Geoff Crook showed great form to cross the line for second.

600m Race winners Geoff Crook and Patrick
Ozolins enjoy a few laughs after the race.

Later in the evening the much anticipated “1 mile” race saw competitors line up at the adjusted starting line in high spirits and good cheer. Once the Starters gun went off the serious side of the competition came to the fore.

As expected many of the Club’s younger athletes (15 to 21 year olds) relished in the opportunity to give the old Imperial standard a good shake. Jake Ring got away early and set a blistering pace for others to follow which not only set up a win but a new Club record.

Senior athletes Scott Martin, Geoff Crook, Linda Weatherill and Cristine Suffolk enjoyed the fast pace of the event and will no doubt feel the benefits of such a good race in their preparations for the upcoming State Country Championships.

n fact all athletes from the Nowra Athletics Club who will be attending the State Country Championships in Cambelltown on the weekend are in great shape at the moment.
If recent form is any indication sprinters Kristi-Lee Taylor and Mat Young are set to do extremely well in their first representative outing for the Club.

If recent form is any indication sprinters Kristi-Lee Taylor and Mat Young are set to do extremely well in their first representative outing for the Club.

Other first time representatives for the Club include mother and son team Judee Nolan and Bradley Fuller, The Webb Family (David, Christy and Sebastian), the Musgrove Family (Paul, Darlene and Cameron), Katie and Tori Sayer, Sarah de Vries and Blake Foggo.

Best of luck to everyone on the team. We all know you’ll do your best so make sure you have a fantastic time too!

Summer Athletics Report
14th January, 2009

Summer Athletics resumed after the Christmas break on Wednesday with a committed group of athletes and families in attendance all ready for a new year of family fun and athletic endeavour.

The competition for 2009 got off to a flying start with Club “Handicap” races as the main events. The first race was the 600m Handicap (B Division) which saw this seasons’ big improver Bronwyn Jeffrey storm home to finish well ahead of the pack. Claire Pitkethly and Zac Jones came in next for second and third.

In the A Division event Perry Strand got an early break and managed to stay in front for this years honours, while Patrick Ozolins and Blake Foggo were both hot on his heals for the placings.

Later in the night Patrick Ozolins went one better to be first across the line in the 1200m race. Cristine Suffolk and Scott Foggo came in next closely followed by Perry Strand. Lisa Carroll showed that consistency is the best policy finishing the 1200m event in almost exactly double her 600m time!

With Country Championships not far away athletes should make the most of the next couple of weeks of competition to sharpen up their racing skills and to perfect their techniques.

To that end a new format of events has been designed to put some fun back into the remainder of the season as well as giving athletes competing in the upcoming championships an opportunity to have some extra practice.

Wednesday evening will feature the much anticipated “1 Mile” race which sees athletes race around the 400m track just over four times to complete the distance. Additionally, sprint races and most of the field events will be on offer at Summer Athletics.

At this time of year warmer weather is to be expected so make sure you take plenty of fluids prior to and during competition. Also a stretching and warm up routine is a very good idea to prevent strains and other injuries.

The Nowra Athletics Club is a family club that actively encourages families and individuals to join and participate in a great sport. All you need is a desire to have a go – you’ll meet new friends, learn new things and have a great time!

As usual this Wednesday (14th January) Summer Athletics will be held at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, Nowra East (behind Shoalhaven High School) with administration and announcements from 5.45pm. Events start at 6.00pm. sharp.

New members are always welcome. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Summer Athletics Report
6th January, 2009

Welcome back to another year of Athletics in the Shoalhaven. And what a year it will be with plenty of activities planned to keep you all fit and active for the whole twelve months.

It all starts tonight with the continuation of the Summer Athletics competition for 2008 – 2009 at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex (behind Shoalhaven High School, Park Road, East Nowra) commencing at 6.00pm.

Blake Foggo out in front early, in a recent 1000m race at Summer Athletics.

This evening’s activities will be a little different from the usual kick off at Summer Athletics. Due to poor weather conditions on last years final night before Christmas, the Club’s Social Barbeque and presentation of Record Certificates has been rescheduled for tonight at the completion of the evening’s events.

All members and friends are invited to stay for our Social Barbeque and to congratulate our new Club Record holders.

Don’t forget Club Members that the 2009 NSW Country Championships at Campbelltown Athletic Centre will be on the 24th and 25th of January.

The schedule of events for the Summer Athletics competition throughout January has been specifically designed to give athletes who are attending the Country Championships as much competition practice as possible. So make sure you come along on every Wednesday evening to give yourself the best chance of success at the Championships!

In other Athletic news one of the Club’s most popular running competitions, the Summer Road Runs, commences in earnest this Friday at 6.30pm at the Nowra Showground.

Series three gets going with a scenic 6km run around the streets of Central Nowra. Word has it that many of the Club’s runners have undertaken secret training programmes to enhance their performances. No doubt the new “Handicappers” will be on their toes and eager to even things up.

For more information on results, upcoming events, track conditions and or cancellations visit the Club website (www.nowraathletics.org.au or just Google Nowra Athletics Club).

As usual Summer Athletics will be held at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, Nowra East (behind Shoalhaven High School) this Wednesday 6th January. Registration and announcements will be from 5.45pm with competition commencing at 6.00pm sharp.

Summer Athletics – XMAS BBQ etc
Wed. 17th December, 2008

The Nowra Athletics Club Christmas Barbeque and Fun Events night is on this evening at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, East Nowra commencing at 6.00pm.

All Club members are invited to enjoy an abbreviated programme of events which include the ever popular relay races, a fun handicap event, sprints and the “Imperial” 1 Mile race.

Patrick Ozolins and Peter Dooley at a recent Summer Athletics meet should both have a good race at tonight’s
1 mile race .

The old fashioned “1 Mile” sees athletes race around the 400m track just over four times to complete the 1,609 metres required to equal the 1 mile distance. Christmas 2006 was the last time athletes from the Club had the opportunity to race the mile, on that occasion Peter Dooley crossed the line in first place in a time of 5.10.6.

It will be interesting to see some of the Club’s younger athletes like Alex Pitkethly, Jake Ring and Patrick Ozolins up against the more experienced crew of Paul Davidson, Peter Dooley and the like. A new Club record may well be on the cards!

At the completion of the fun athletic events all members and friends are invited to stay for our Christmas barbeque. To complete the evening and to recognise outstanding achievements throughout the season a presentation of Certificates will be made to all new Club Record holders.

In case you weren’t aware, Summer Athletics will be

taking a short break over the festive season and will return next year on January 7, 2009. In the New Year, there will be a new format of events all designed to keep you fit, healthy and interested in athletics.

Last Wednesday evening’s Summer Athletics was the final night of the pointscore competition before the Christmas break.

As expected there were some great performances and not just from the Club’s more talented athletes either. Indeed the real stars at Summer Athletics this season have been the Club members who’ve entered as many events as possible week after week.

Mat Young stepped up a gear on Wednesday and completed the Trifecta in Men’s sprint events by setting a new record in the 30-39yrs 200m event. Also family members Alex Pitkethly and Claire Pitkethly both set new records in the 2000m event – well done!

With local athletes performing so well Club officials are anticipating fabulous results for the Club at the upcoming NSW Country Athletics Carnival held in Campbelltown on January 24 and 25.

Any athletes wishing to participate in the Country Carnival are reminded that entry forms must be returned now. An information brochure and entry forms for the Country Carnival are available at the information stand near the canteen at Summer Athletics on Wednesday evenings.

Athletes attending the Country Carnival will be given entry, travel and accommodation support by the club. For further details please speak to Club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or any Club official at Summer Athletics.

The Club management committee would like to thank all members, part time officials, helpers and parents for their assistance and participation throughout the season and wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
For more information on results, upcoming events, track conditions and or cancellations visit the Club website .

New members are always welcome, for further enquiries contact Club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along on Wednesday. Summer Athletics - you’ll discover how good it is when you’re there!

In the 3000m 18/19 Yrs Men’s Steeplechase event Alex Pitkethly toughed out a great race against Australia’s best emerging steeplechase exponents. During the race Alex kept within striking distance of the leaders and managed to hold off several challenges, securing the bronze medal.

Thirteen year old Michaela Quinn showed an enormous amount of courage overcoming a previously unknown medical complaint to finish mid-field in the girls 14yrs 3000m event. By all accounts an extremely gutsy performance, given the fact that the particular complaint severely hampered her ability to run freely.

Campbell Harvey showed plenty of class in the 400m and 800m races out performing his previous best marks in both events. The 800m heat result secured a place in the final which saw him finish just outside of medal contention in fourth position.

Well done gang, we hope to see you back at the local scene soon.

The Summer Athletics Competition on Wednesday evening once again provided plenty of entertainment for onlookers and loads enjoyment for participants. Many of the Club’s sprinters were in fine form relishing the mild conditions and the opportunity to sharpen their racing skills for the upcoming State Country Championships held at Campbelltown in January.

Summer Athletics Report
3rd December, 2008

There was plenty of action in the field events at Summer Athletics at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex on Wednesday evening (26-11-08). Men’s Shot Put record holder Simon Hale made a welcomed return to the athletics track and hoisted several shots way out in the field setting the “cat amongst the pigeons” in the Veteran Men’s division.

In the Junior boys divisions, Angus Clarke went very close to the Club’s best distance for Boys U10’s Shot Put. With a little more practice a new Club record is definitely within his reach.

Noah Liddicoat, Mathew Whittaker and Josh Neri also showed plenty of skill in their Shot event, all perfecting their individual techniques at every turn. Brothers Kyle and Sean Marsh have plenty to give in the strength department and will no doubt be ones to watch over the rest of the season.

In the Girls Shot Put event Madeleine Jeffrey chalked up some good distances while friends Madison Hale, Mia Davidson and Jessica Baxter showed that they’re not too far away.

Athletic sisters Abby Patrick and Ruby Patrick gave an accomplished performance at the field events and continued on with some solid results in their track events too. Well done girls!

Club Members are reminded that the 2009 NSW Country Championships at Campbelltown Athletic Centre will be on the 24th and 25th of January. Nowra Athletics Club sees this event as the highlight of the athletic calendar.

Summer Athletics Report
19th November, 2008

The Summer Athletics competition is now in full swing and all the Club’s athletes are in great form too. So much so that records are being broken on a regular basis, keeping Club officials on their toes scrambling for the record books and certificates.

Over the past couple of weeks a number of the Club’s sprinting records have been left behind setting an even higher benchmark for the rest of the season and beyond.

Kristi-Lee Taylor is the fastest girl in the Club with new records in the 50 and 150 metre events (Girls 12/13yrs). Also in the Women’s 40-49yrs category Lynda Douglass surpassed the previous best time in the 50 and 150 metre events. Claire Pitkethly in keeping up the family name at the track, broke records in the Women’s 50-59yrs 200m, Javelin and Long Jump events.

New Club member Mat Taylor exceeded all expectations in his first season at the Club breaking records in the Men’s 30-39yrs 50, 100 and 150 metre events. Who knows with a little extra work the 200m record mightn’t be too far away?

It was good to see so many part time officials and helpers assisting on Wednesday evening especially in the throwing and jumping events. Thanks for your efforts gang!

Make sure you come along to Summer Athletics on Wednesday 10th December as it’s the last night of the regular competition for 2008 - the competition will resume again in early January 2009.  You should definitely be at Summer Athletics on Wednesday 17th of December for the Club’s Xmas BBQ. There will be lots of fun events including handicap races, team events and the old “one mile”.

For more information on results, upcoming events, track conditions and or cancellations visit the Club website.

Summer Athletics Report

12th November, 2008

Summer Athletics on Wednesday, 5th November, saw another good turnout of athletes and their families enjoying a beautiful Shoalhaven evening.

There was a high level of participation in most events so much so that several races were required in the same event to accommodate all the entrants.

The 1500 metre event continues to be a very popular race with Junior and Senior runners. With only three and three quarter laps to run, athletes have no time to settle into a rhythm and usually feel the competitive urge to stay in front. Both of these factors contribute to make this event one of the most interesting for spectators and one of the best for runners who enjoy friendly competition.

Once again the favourite event for the evening was the Fun shuttle relay. With Club prestige on the line, keen handicapping and plenty of attention from runners the race was a resounding success.

This season a number of the Club’s athletes known for their sprinting prowess, have been returning some solid performances week after week. Paul Musgrove, Bernie Condon and Doug McNally just keep improving despite rain interrupted racing and training programmes.

In the younger ranks Jyle Smith is steadily climbing up the points table with consistent high quality running in the middle distance events. Girls Gabby Brennan, Mia Davidson, Kyla Davidson, Brielle Musgrove, Leonie Foggo, Ava Jeffrey, Emily Warden and Narelle O’Neill have all performed extremely well over the season so far – keep up the good work!

This week, events include 50, 150 & 400m sprints and 1000 & 3000m middle distance races. The field events include High Jump, Shot Put, Javelin, Discus and Long Jump.

Due to the large number of entrants Club Officials are fairly stretched at times and would appreciate assistance from any athletes, club members or parents. To make it easier for any would be helpers or trainee officials’ ample information and advice about scoring and running individual events is readily available – so please assist where you can.

For more information on results, upcoming events, tack conditions and or cancellations visit the Club website.

As usual Summer Athletics will be held at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, Nowra East (behind Shoalhaven High School) this Wednesday 12th November. Registration and announcements will be from 5.45pm with competition commencing at 6.00pm sharp.

Summer Athletics Report
5th November, 2008

Athletics on a Wednesday evening at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex finally saw the light of day last week and without any rain - amazing!

Athletes and their families made the most of the conditions and the diverse range of events to run, throw and jump to their hearts content.

Athletics Photo(Athletics0048); Leane Davidson, Michelle Smith and Debbie Clark at full stretch in the Women’s 100m event at Summer Athletics on Wednesday

There were some great performances from both junior and senior athletes alike. Dynamic running mums Michelle Smith, Leane Davidson and Debbie Clark had a fantastic race burning down the straight in the Senior Women’s 100m event.

Later in the evening some long standing Club records were dispatched in a number of events. Tori Sayer was on song with a mighty throw in the 18/19yrs discus of 28.85, which followed on from her Javelin record of 34.82m set on the 8th of October.

Patrick Suitor also set a new Club record in the 18/19 Yrs Men’s Discus event with 38.26m. In the final event for the evening Alex Pitkethly, edged on by some determined chasers, set a new Club record of 6.20 in the 18/19yrs Men’s 2000m event.

Of course records aside, the most popular race of the evening was the Handicap Circular Relay.

Family members, friends and unfamiliar runners to the sprinting events were carried away with the excitement and all had a go. Good clean healthy fun and plenty of laughs was the result.

This week the good times continue with events that include 60, 100, 600, and 1500 metre races. The field events tonight include High Jump, Shot Put, Javelin and Long Jump.

For your convenience the world renowned “Club Canteen” will be open for business offering a variety of hot & cold food and drinks at very reasonable prices.

For more information on results, upcoming events, tack conditions and or cancellations visit the Club website.

Summer Athletics Report
29th October, 2008

Summer Athletics on Wednesday saw a committed group of athletes and their families turn out for another evening of competition and good healthy fun. Unfortunately the weather was against us again but none the less, we still managed to get a few events underway.

The Juniors Long Jump, Seniors Javelin, 50 metre sprints and the 1000 metre middle distance event had athletes on their toes early and all were in very good form too. Part time officials and helpers made the shortened evening all the better – thanks for your efforts!

When the rain came organisers were forced to abandon the rest of the meet except for the 3000 metre event, which went ahead regardless. Some of the Club's juniors, who are representing NSW at the Pacific School Games, appreciated the opportunity for a final hit out before their big moment. Thank you to all officials who stayed, Paul Davidson and Zahra Wells who pushed all the younger ones along and Trish Gibb who kept the canteen fires burning.

With any luck weatherwise this Wednesday evenings competition will be a success - so make the most of it! Tonight's Summer Athletics track events include 80, 200, 800 and 2000 metre races and a fun circular relay. The Discus, Shot Put, Long Jump and Triple Jump will be the field events.

Summer Athletics Report
22ndOctober, 2008

Like everything else around the district last week, Summer Athletics on Wednesday evening was washed out. Although a grass running track provides good cushioning and a natural feel it isn't weatherproof.

Our apologies to anyone who turned up for a run on Wednesday - please check the Nowra Athletics Club website if things look a little doubtful or if we've had a lot of rain in the preceding days before competition. Hopefully this evening Summer Athletics will get a start and all the clubs' athletes the opportunity to resume their Club Championship efforts.

It's only up to Round 6 in the competition at present which leaves plenty of time for new members and athletes to improve before the end of the season. Of course in order for events to run smoothly at Summer Athletics part time officials are needed each week. If you can spare a little time as an official you'll learn new things in a stress free environment and we guarantee that you'll enjoy it by meeting good people and sharing a few laughs.

Don't forget tonight's Summer Athletics track events include 50, 100, 400, 1000, and 3000 metre foot races and a fun shuttle relay. The Discus, Shot Put, Long Jump and Javelin will feature as the field events.

For more information on results, upcoming events, tack conditions and or cancellations visit the Club website

Summer Athletics Report
15th October, 2008

The Nowra Athletics Club's Summer Athletics competition on Wednesday evening saw many of the Club's regulars out on track making the most of the Day Light saving time. With school holidays in full swing and many families away for the break competition closed a little earlier than expected.

The competition tonight will no doubt produce some good competitive races and plenty of enjoyment for many of the families who will be there. The extra hour of daylight at this time of year traditionally brings a second wave of new members and families wishing to do something together and still have their weekends free!

If you are interested in joining the Nowra Athletics Club just come along to Summer Athletics on Wednesday evening.

With the warmer weather approaching athletes should take particular care concerning their intake of water and fluids so as not to suffer from the effects of heat stress and dehydration. Athletes who enter sprints and field events are also reminded that a warm up lap or two and stretches should be part of your regular routine before competing.

Summer Athletics will be held this Wednesday 15th October at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, Nowra East (behind Shoalhaven High School)

Track & Field Report
8th  October, 2008

ROUND three of the Nowra Athletics Club summer pointscore was successfully completed last Wednesday at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex. Great performances were recorded across the board, but maybe the best was kept to last in the two kilometre event.

Alex Pitkethly broke the 18/19 years record on his way too strong win. Alex will be representing NSW at the Pacific Schools Games to be held in Canberra in December.

Round four of the pointscore will be conducted tonight, weather permitting. Events will be series one with 60, 100,

600 and 1500 metres on the track and field events including high and long jumps, shot put and javelin.

Because the arrangement of some field events has been changed to cater for the big numbers competing, more assistance is required so that several  throwing events can be conducted atthe same time.

Many thanks to those who have been answering the call, more helpers are required.

Track & Field Report

The younger members of the Club had plenty of fun as well, taking part in the running races, long jump and shot put events. The evening finished on a high note, with most youngsters and a few oldsters competing in the handicapped shuttle relay.

Summer Athletics isn't just about winning, participation and the enjoyment that follows is much more important. It's a great feeling to come first in your race or division; however the real rewards come from knowing that you’ve taken part in a great sport with family and friends.

In other athletic news local athlete Alex Pitkethly has been selected to represent NSW in the Pacific School Games in Canberra in December. Alex's selection came after he took second place in the 19yrs 2km Steeplechase event at the NSW All Schools Championship held in Sydney last week.

Athletics Report
Wed. 24-09-08

It was all action at Summer Athletics at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex on Wednesday evening. The weather was perfect (although a little cool), the track was at its best and all the athletes were rearing to go.

Before the evenings activities got off to a start Club Patron, Rod Gibb welcomed all athletes to the Nowra Athletics Club and gave a brief talk about the Summer Athletics competition. Reminding everyone that officials, volunteers and helpers are required for the competition to run smoothly.

If you would like to know more about how you can assist as an official or volunteer please talk to one of the Club's Committee members. Additionally, information brochures with the rules and regulations are available in the administration area.

The first event for the evening was the 600m race where a large contingent of runners in ages from 4 to 74 got involved. A short time later the 60m sprints and field events commenced.

Younger athletes took advantage of the near perfect conditions, entering almost every event in large numbers. The javelin, shot put, and 1500m race were more popular with parents and the experienced (veteran) athletes.

Round 2 of the 2008/09 Summer Athletics Competition will be held this Wednesday 24th September at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, East Nowra (behind Shoalhaven High School).  Start time is 6.00pm with administration and announcements from 5.30pm.

Tonight's competition features 50m sprints, 400m, 3000/5000m, Long Jump, High Jump, Discus, Javelin and Shot Put events.

For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along to Summer Athletics tonight. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Summer Road Runs on the weekend saw the welcome return of friend and follow runner Kevyn Davis. Great to see you back Kev!

Club Vice President Terry Bailey was also back on deck organising and working at the Forest Course on Saturday. A big thank you goes to Gail Egan for her organisational and administrative achievements. Full marks to Skye and Erin Martin who kept the drink station well stocked which was much appreciated as Saturday's event was the hottest September Road Run this century.

Talking of hot running - Lisa Carroll made the most of the high temperatures and finished strongly for first place. A short time later Bill Broughton and Mat Kinsele came in for the minor places.

Next week's Summer Road Runs will be held at the new Cambewarra course. All runners should meet at the Cambewarra School of Arts Hall (cnrs Main Road and Goorama Drive, Cambewarra) at approximately 4.15pm on Saturday for race instructions and handicaps.

Summer Report
17th September, 2008

Nowra Athletics Club's Summer Athletics competition got underway in style on Wednesday evening. Despite the heavy track conditions and a shortened program of events, everyone who was there had a fantastic time.

There were 60 metre sprints, long jump and shot put events - all designed to ease the diverse range of athletes into the new 2008/09 season. Club officials were very pleased with the numbers of families and new members who attended and hope to see many more over the coming weeks.

The 2008/09 season is a three series competition where events change each Wednesday evening over a three week period. This means all athletes have the opportunity to try each and every track and field event.

The Summer Athletics competition is open to athletes of all ages (5yrs to 105yrs). The Club offers generous membership discounts to families and welcomes all new members. Once you join the Nowra Athletics Club you are entitled to enjoy our Summer Athletics Competition and our Summer Road Runs Competition.

The Summer Road Runs are conducted at numerous course locations around the Shoalhaven on Saturday afternoons from 4.30pm (later changing to Friday at 6.00pm when daylight saving commences).

On Saturday runners from the Club took to the streets around Nowra Central competing in round one of the Summer Road Runs competition.

It was hot and hard work on Saturday with temperatures in the late twenties and not a breeze to speak of. The long hills up to the Nowra Showground certainly thinned out the leading pack of runners as the speedier back markers overcame their handicaps.

The youthful Blake Foggo was just too good on the day and finished well ahead in the opening race of the season. Other new Club members Jamie Mathews and Peter Khourey came home with a strong finish for second and third.

Next week's Summer Road Runs will be held at the Tomerong State Forest at 4.30pm. To find the Forest drive approximately 5km down Jervis Bay Road (off the Princes Hwy) watch for the signs and turn right in to the Tomerong State Forest.

Summer Athletics will be held this Wednesday 17th September at the Ron Brown Sporting Complex, Park Road, East Nowra (behind Shoalhaven High School).

In order to participate in Summer Athletics (or Summer Road Runs), all members must have their application and membership forms submitted for processing. Please see Club officials prior to the start of Summer Athletics or Summer Road Runs to finalise all administration matters.

For further results or information log on to the Nowra Athletics Club website.

New members are always welcome at Nowra Athletics Club. For further enquiries contact club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 or simply come along to Summer Athletics on Wednesday. Looking forward to seeing you there!
