Nowra Athletes shine at NSW Junior Championships ! Nowra Athletics Clubs Junior athletes are to be congratulated for their outstanding performances at the recent NSW Junior Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park. The meet was a great opportunity for our talented junior athletes to compete against the state’s best and test themselves with National Qualifying times on offer for the upcoming Australian Junior Championships next month. Most of our athletes were competing against athletes a year or more older than their current age which makes their results even more impressive. |
|||
|
|
16 year old Arron Speissberger-Parker was one such athlete,
competing in the Under 18 year age division Arron led the Nowra
medal count with a two Bronze medals. Arron’s 800m race tested not
only his running ability but also his nerves when after being set on
the start line of his race, the race was then called off due to a
severe thunderstorm approaching. After a half an hour break and set
to run on a flooded track, Arron stormed home for a Bronze medal. To
add further satisfaction to his outstanding 800m, Arron ran a 4
second personal best in the 1500m to claim a second Bronze medal
lowering his time to 4.06.4. Michaela Quinn was all class in a large and hotly contested 1500m race with a 4th place and a qualifying time for Nationals. Harry Scouller competing in the Under 20’s continued his stellar form with a new personal best in his 800m with a heat time of 1.53.81, and backed up in the 800m final to bring home a bronze medal. Shenay Edwards at 11 years of age competed in the under 14 years division and fought out an impressive 800m with an overall 8th place. Jye Edwards has recently returned to the track after illness and took on a large field in his 800m for an overall 17th place (7th for age). |
||
|
Samantha Peace also competing against older athletes had all her talents on show in the Discus event saving her best throw til last with a 35.38 which also gave Sam a well earned spot at Nationals. Club newcomer Lucy Marron continues to shine at state level, placed 4th overall in the womens under 16 high jump and second placed for her age. Congratulations to all of these junior representatives, your club is proud of your achievements and we wish those competing at Nationals the best of luck. On the home front the Wednesday night handicap races are being enjoyed by all club members with the younger and more mature athletes all keen to win their races and secure their berth in the upcoming finals. Congratulations to the following athletes who raced brilliantly to win their heats of the 100m handicap, Macauley Dallas, Sonja Rodda, Jack Rodda, Peter Dooley, Cameron Musgrove and Liam Dooley. There is sure to be some great family rivalry in upcoming 100m races ! There were two handicap 800m races with Andrew Rodda flying home ahead of Skye Martin and Geoff Crook, securing the top three places in the first race. The girls put on a fantastic show in the second race with April Rodda determined not to let her father have all the glory with a great win in her race. Annabelle Dallas had a great run for 2nd with Gabby Brennan home in 3rd. In the field events athletes continued to show improvement for the season with Doug McNally breaking his own Discus Record with a new mark of 30.87. Congratulations Doug. Tonight’s track competition see’s the continuation of the handicap races which always add some excitement and great racing to the nights programme.

Summer Road Run – Cambewarra - 17th February Round 6, the final round of series three of the Nowra Athletics Club Summer Road Runs, saw over 30 odd competitors hit the streets of Cambewarra on Friday night. The predicted storm kindly held back until the run was over, allowing the runners to give it their best shot in conducive conditions. However, that said, the Cambewarra course is possibly the toughest in the series with dreaded hills at every turn! A big warm welcome goes out to Melanie Kriss who ran well on her first night of road running and also to popular runner Tammy Jones who put in her best effort after a bit of a break. Good to see you back, Tammy. Running off a tough handicap, veteran runner Eric Moeller-Duhme showed everyone he has still got what it takes, gliding past fellow competitors in an effortless stride to scoop the pool for first place. Strong runner Angela Bond climbed the hills easily to take second place and running her best season ever, Lisa Carroll was hot on the heels of Angela for third position. Congratulations everyone, you make running look easy to the untrained eye! Everyone knows runners just do it for the chocolate and almost everyone won a chocolate on Friday night due to beating Corner-Cutter Dean Bryce, who didn’t cut any corners and was handicapped to the hilt!. Thanks Dean, we enjoyed the winnings and thanks to Zahra Wells for supplying the chocolate! And also thanks to Mr Handicapper, for your favourable handicapping, well done! This Friday night a scavenger hunt will be held, starting from the Nowra Showground meeting at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. Be sure to bring your running feet and thinking caps for a night of fun and adventure. Just a reminder the Cross Country season is just around the corner, starting Saturday March 24 at the Willandra course. Cross Country is family friendly and has runs for all ages and abilities, so why not come along and give it a go. Newcomers are always welcome. For enquiries regarding Track and Field and Cross Country, Contact Club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 and for the road runs contact Kevyn Davis on 44478309 or simply come along on Friday evening. Looking forward to seeing you there! For comprehensive information about the Nowra Athletics Club’s competitions, results and upcoming events visit this informative Nowra Athletics Club Website. Summer Road Run – Vincentia - 10th February Although the rain finally stopped after a perilously wet week, the aftermath was steamy humid conditions for the keen runners who ventured out on Friday night. Twenty odd runners embarked on the tough 6km course, which had to have the start line moved back due to unsuitable track conditions, thus creating some grumblings amongst the competitors. All that aside, some great running was had with an all-female line-up for the top three positions. Ava Jeffrey is running on fire at the moment and secured the accolades for first position. Well done, Ava. And running with gusto were second and third placegetters, Trish Bailey and Sky Martin. Fantastic effort girls! This Friday nights run, which is round 6 of series three, will be held at the Cambewarra course, meeting at the village hall at 6.15pm. This is the last round of the series, with the annual scavenger hunt being held next week. So come along and give it all you’ve got and have one last go at winning that elusive chocolate! Looking forward to seeing you all there for some exciting competition. For any enquiries regarding summer road runs, Kevyn Davis is your point of contact on 4447 8309. This year’s event saw some of the athletes competing on Friday night and Cristine Suffolk led the charge for the women with a silver medal in the Open Women’s 5000m. Cristine is currently competing in the World Masters Events in New Zealand and we look forward to hearing her results on her return. Not to be outdone Hayden Rodda commenced our Men’s medal tally with a Bronze Medal in the 16 Years Hammer Throw. Rhys Burinaga, competing in his first Country Championships in the 10 years division claimed double Gold in both the discus and shotput while Ethan Havadjia 10 yrs won a silver medal in the 1500m. The 14 years boys division was a sea of Yellow with 6 boys competing from the club with outstanding success Zac Havadjia 100m Hurdles 1st, 200m hurdles 1st, 100m 3rd, 200m, 3rd 400m 3rd, Jye Edwards 1500m 3rd, 800m 1st, Oscar Edwards 2km Steeplechase 3rd, Angus Pryde 800m 2nd Long Jump 3rd, Liam Dooley High Jump 2nd, Hayden Rodda 16 yrs Hammer 3rd, 200m 3rd, Harry Scouller Open 800m 3rd, Peter Dooley 50-59 800m 1st 1500m 1st, Geoff Crook 50-59 Javelin 2nd, Doug McNally 60+ Long Jump 1st, Shotput 2nd, Javelin 2nd. Whilst there were plenty of medals won by individual club members this year’s relay teams set the track alight with athletes keen to run for their club and all members showing plenty of speed after a long day of competition. The 30+ Women’s team saw our long distance runners turn their hand at a 100m sprint doing a brilliant job and were just shy of a medal coming home in 4th place, Congratulations Lynda Douglass, Darlene Musgrove, Cristine Suffolk and Alison Havadjia. The 13 Boys relay team had some handy inclusions this year with some of our speedy girls which saw the A Team of Sebastian Webb, Jade Mustapic, Shenay Edwards and April Rodda storm home for a silver medal and our B Team of Rhys Burinaga, Ethan Havadjia, Tara Mustapic and Sonja Rodda claiming a well deserved Bronze. The 15 Years Boys teams put on a terrific show with our A team of Angus Pryde, Zac Havadjia, Cameron Musgrove and Jye Edwards winning the Gold Medal and our B Team of Sebastian Webb, Liam Dooley, Jade Mustapic and Shenay Edwards claiming the Bronze. But after a year of friendly banter and secret training sessions it was time for the 30+ Men’s teams to hit the track not only running for medals but the more important 10 second challenge (A Team age total of 169 years to beat the “older” B Team age total 226 years, by more than 10 seconds) the A Team of Andrew Havadjia, Andrew Rodda, David Webb and Peter Dooley also known as the “Havadjia Jets” were trying to claim some last minute time adjustments due to “speedy” Paul Musgrove out due to injury, however, Peter Dooley was more than up to the challenge with his inclusion and their team claimed the Gold Medal. However, the B Team “The Master Blasters” of Bernard Condon, Glen Mustapic, Geoff Crook and Doug McNally were feeling thirsty and determined and their 4th place finish with just a 7.7 second margin saw the “blasters” claim the beverages for the 2nd year running. Apologies to any athletes who may have been overlooked in the medal results due to the large numbers, full results can be found on the web at NSW Athletics. Good luck to all our athletes who are heading to Sydney this weekend to compete in the NSW Youth Championships to be held at Sydney Olympic Park. On the local front Wednesdays track competition see’s the return of the 100m and 1km handicap events which always add some excitement and great racing to the nights programme. Wednesday nights Field Events commence at 6pm SHARP, could all athletes please proceed to their field event as indicated on the noticeboard, registration for new members is from 5.30pm. Summer Road Run
– Culburra
-
27th January The humid sticky air of Friday evening didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the runners who took on the pairs run at the testing Culburra course. And a great night of running it was! Newcomer Patricia Bailey crossed the line first, a whole minute and a half ahead of second placegetter Damien Smith, and Bradley Sawyers nipped at Damian’s heels for third place! Great running everyone, congratulations! The pairs run saw some exciting competition, with Damien Smith and Patricia Bailey featuring once again as the outright winners! Well done guys, I’m sure you’re both now enjoying the fruits of your labour, or should I say, chocolate! Running on fire for second place were Peter Khourey and Paul Jennings, coming in only 15 seconds apart. And racing in for a bite of the chocolate were third placegetters Darren Smith and Zahra Wells, who, incidentally were only 7 seconds apart. Fantastic effort everyone, it’s amazing how the lure of chocolate can get those feet moving. Did someone mention chocolate? This Friday’s run, which is round 4 of Series 3, will be held at the Tomerong course, meeting at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. Afterwards, Peter Khourey has kindly invited everyone back to his home for a sausage sizzle. Yum! Looking forward to seeing you all there. Finally, just a reminder that next Friday’s run, round 5, will be held at Vincentia, not Nowra as was previously scheduled, due to the Nowra Show being on.

Summer Road Run – Cambewarra - 6th January Round one of Series three of the Summer Road Runs was held at the testing 6km Cambewarra course on Friday evening with thirty odd competitors taking on the challenge after the revelries of the Christmas/new year break. Those inevitable news year’s resolutions brought back some old faces as well as new ones to the joy of running and on that note a big warm welcome goes out to Paul Duncan, our newest member of the road running clan! Those hotfooted backmarkers showed what they were made of by taking the accolades for the first three spots this week. Running on fire in anticipation of winning chocolate were Paul Jennings taking first place, followed closely by Bill Broughton for second and coming in for third with her trusty dog who ran the whole way with her was Chrissie Suffolk. Great effort everyone, well done. A special mention must go out to Fay and Henry Suffolk who provide the much needed drink station on the Cambewarra course. Thankyou both, it is very much appreciated. A runner’s dream meal is chocolate and cake and handicapper Kevyn Davis was presented with just that on Friday night. Laura Prince and Zahra Wells showed their culinary style with their version of chocolate cake - a cake made in the style of a Cadbury chocolate, purple wrapper and all! Well done girls, however, I don’t know if your efforts will score a better handicap for you both this week! Erowal Bay is the venue of choice for this Friday’s road run. Everyone was in the Christmas spirit, taking on the Christmas run scavenger hunt with enthusiasm and if that wasn’t enough, they then tested their brainpower with the trivia questions. Well done girls, a big turnaround from last year’s effort where you came in last with the trivia component and first with the run! This just goes to prove, contrary to popular belief, runners do have intelligence! With series two now finished, results have been tallied and the top three placegetters announced. Taking the accolades for first place is Dean “Corner cutter” Bryce, second placegetter is Mathew Davis and coming in for third is Ed Egan. Congratulations guys, great effort! December, 2011 A few rain spots did not deter the few Nowra Athletics Club members from completing Round 7 of the Summer pointscore last Wednesday . The Club will conduct the last Track and Field events, Pointscore Round 8 this Wednesday 14th December. Club members have suffered an interrupted season due to wet weather and we hope that on Wednesday night we can get some events conducted. With a break of three weeks over the Christmas New Year period, Club members are reminded that the Country Championships are the next big event .These championships will be conducted at Newcastle on January 27,28 and 29. You need to know that Entry forms for the Country Championships will be available this Wednesday evening. Entry fees are subsidized by the Club for the first event you enter. The club also assists with accommodation expenses. If you for some reason cannot be present tonight or we suffer a washout you should contact the club Secretary, Jan Gibb (44406226) without delay. We hope that the weather will be kind next year. 2012 events will commence on January 4th. I don't believe in pessimism. If something doesn't come up the way you want, forge ahead. Summer Road Run – Cambewarra
- 9th December The rain that dogged the Shoalhaven all week finally held off for Friday evening and allowed for some comfortable running at the picturesque albeit tough 6km Cambewarra course. Approximately 20 or so competitors turned up for a bite of the cherry or should I say chocolate, the enticing carrot dangling in the distance! |

This week saw some great running, with the first three positions won amongst some fierce rivalry. First position was taken out by Bronwyn Jeffrey, who, running like a demon, led the race all the way! Well done, Bronwyn! Taking the accolades for second spot was none other than Bronwyn’s husband, Doug! Great running Doug, good to see you chasing after your wife! Running off a handicap of 18 minutes was backmarker Scott Martin, who absolutely flew through the course with smooth precision to claim third place. Fantastic effort, Scott, however, I think the handicapper will have his eye on you this Friday! Interesting to note the running styles of Zahra Wells and Sarah Martin this week. Taking a leaf out of the book of the master of corner cutting, Dean Bryce, they thought they’d cut short the run by about 1km on the last stretch; once again the handicapper was completely unaware of such goings on and I’m sure the girls are wondering if it was all worth it; like the master himself, they didn’t come close to winning a chocolate, in fact they came last! Hmmm, is there a lesson to be learnt here? Perhaps they all should just buy their own chocolate!. This Friday nights running will be held at Erowal Bay. Please meet at the Fire Station Park at around 6.15pm ready for a 6.30pm start. All courses are approximately 6kms and newcomers are most welcome, so come along and give it a go. Looking forward to seeing you there, and you might win a chocolate. |

team which competed at this year’s NSW Country Championships. |
On the track and the sprints were close races across all the grades but the 1km event proved to be more of a test for some. Jack Rodda won the A Grade 1km and in the Vets Peter Dooley took the win just ahead of Paul Davidson. Jade Mustapic put in a dominant run for her win in C Grade 1km and keeping it in the family Tara Mustapic also won her 1km event in D Grade Division 1. Annabelle Dallas put in a great effort to win D Grade Division 2. In the Ladies Veteran Division consistent club performer Helen O’Donnell secured a comfortable win. A reminder to all our athletes that the highlight of our Track and Field Calendar, the NSW Country Championships is fast approaching, this year’s event is to be held at Glendale Sports Centre in Newcastle on the weekend of the 28th and 29th of January. Summer Road Run –
Tomerong
- 25th November
The Tomerong 6km course was the chosen venue for the 20 odd enthusiastic runners who turned up on Friday night ready to do what they had to, to win that elusive chocolate! And talk about the somewhat "creative ways" the track was run this week! A few changes were made to the course, including a new sign with the encouraging words, "Dean Bryce Shortcut"; this prompted one of the runners, who is not known at this stage, to pull the sign out! When the fore mentioned Dean spotted this devious act, he promptly resurrected the sign to its original glory! This event unfolded a whole new league of running for "Corner Cutter" Dean Bryce. With determination and chocolate on his mind, Dean then proceeded to jump a 2 metre fence, which resulted in a 1km shortcut through a farm; however, the icing on the cake was the extra help he got from his daughter who gave him a lift for 30 metres or so up a hill! All this was planned so the normally astute handicapper didn’t see a thing! Alas, this creative albeit not quite legal style of running didn’t result in a win or a chocolate for Deano. He was outdone by the strong female contingent! It was an all-female cast who took out the first 6 positions this week. Di Court and Trish Bird ran neck and neck all the way, with Di pipping Trish at post, followed closely behind by Claire Pikethly who took the accolades for third. Fantastic running girls. Claire was tussling all the way with Alison Havadjia, who was breathing down her neck for 4th place while Eva Moeller-Duhme and Sky Martin ran extremely well to take positions 5th and 6th consecutively. Let’s see if the guys can outdo the girls this week, the challenge has been set! Friday night was also "pairs" night which saw Claire double up to take first place with Darren Morris, Trish Bird and Mitch Barry coming in for second and Eric and Eva Moeller-Duhme were the well paired 3rd placegetters. Friday night also saw the presentation of the inaugural "Legend" award which consists of a gold medal made out of…… you’ve guessed it, chocolate! The proud winner of such a prestigious award was none other than Kevyn Davis. Congratulations Kevyn, I bet you are down to the gold wrapper of that chocolate medal already! This week’s running will be held at the scenic Nowra course. Be sure to arrive at the Nowra Showground at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. Newcomers are always welcome, so come along and give it a go. All courses are approximately 6kms. Looking forward to seeing you there! Due to inclement weather, track and field was once again unable to be held on Wednesday night or even Saturday afternoon as per the backup plan. We can only hope the rain holds off next Wednesdays scheduled events. Please check the this website for up to date information regarding any cancellations, results and upcoming events. For enquiries regarding Track and Field contact Club Secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226 and for the road runs contact Kevyn Davis on 44478309 or simply come along on Friday evening. Summer Road Run – Culburra -18th November Warm, sticky conditions didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the large group of runners who contested round 3 of series 2 of the summer road runs at Culburra on Friday. Although the course is considered less challenging than some of the others in the current series, it is a two lap track, which can be just as testing. However, all this only added to the spectacular night of running that unfolded! It was an absolute blanket finish for the first three positions, with only 6 seconds between first, second and third! Braedon Gernyi ran like a graceful gazelle, using those long legs in what appeared to be an effortless stride to pip backmarker Peter Khourey at the post. Peter put a fantastic effort in, being only 3 seconds behind Braedon and 3 seconds ahead of third placegetter Paul Jennings who is running like a demon at the moment! What a dynamic finish; congratulations guys, great effort! However I reckon the handicapper has his eye on all three of you now, lookout! A full listing of results can be found on the Nowra Athletics club website. This Friday’s road run will be a “pair’s event”, which will be held at the Tomerong course. Running kicks off at 6.30pm, so arrive around 6.15pm for administration purposes. Looking forward to seeing there! Newcomers are always welcome. Due to continuous rain, Wednesday night Track and Field has had 4 weeks of cancelled events. A suggestion has been made IF we cannot compete on a Wednesday evening; we have a CONTINGENCY PLAN to compete on the next SATURDAY AFTERNOON OR EVENING at a time to be decided. Please contact club secretary Jan Gibb as soon as possible if you support this plan. For enquiries regarding summer road runs, Kevyn Davis is your point of contact on 4447 8309 and for Track and Field, contact club secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226. Club News Summer Road Run – 11th November, 2011 Round two of series two of the Summer Road Runs was held at the picture perfect coastal village of Vincentia on Friday evening. The challenging 6km course had some slight changes added, which tested some runners both mentally and physically, with some going in different directions altogether! In fact, I think Darrin Smith ran in an entirely different suburb! However, all runners returned safely to the lure of the winning chocolate in the distance. This week’s winner was Trish Bird who ran tremendously well, maintaining first position all the way. Trish has improved dramatically this season, and the proof is in the pudding with her result this week, well done Trish. Flying behind Trish within a 5 second margin, was well deserving second placegetter Mathew Davis and that consistent young runner Blake Foggo took the accolades for third, 45 seconds behind Mathew. It must have been a case of déjà vu for Blake, who was third last week as well, let’s see if he can up the ante this Friday. Backmarkers Bill Broughton, Andy Depree and Scott Martin had a blanket finish for positions 4th through to 6th, there was nothing in it; perhaps they were glued together by Andy’s colossal mo he is growing for Movember! Fantastic running guys! And once again, mention must be made of the great handicapping also. This Friday’s run will be held at the Culburra course, meeting at Lake Wollumboola Reserve, corner of East Crescent and Eastbourne Avenue. Running kicks off at 6.30pm, so it is wise to arrive at 6.15pm for administration purposes. Newcomers are always welcome, looking forward to seeing you there! For enquiries regarding summer road runs, Kevyn Davis is your point of contact on 4447 8309 and for Track and Field, contact club secretary Jan Gibb on 4446 0226. Track and Field - 2nd November, 2011 Despite the rain there were some superb results recorded at last Wednesday’s track and field meet for members of Nowra Athletics Club. The athletes appreciate our hard working volunteers and officials even more on these nights, as they worked in the rain so as many events as possible were conducted, so to all our volunteers a HUGE Thank You. On the track the C Grade boys enjoyed plenty of competition. Harry Parrish continues to improve putting in some great performances in the 80 & 200m where he was placed 2nd and enjoyed solid win in the 800m. It was a blanket finish for the majority of boys in the 80 & 200m with Brodie Nelson, Harry and Sebastian Webb at the front of the field for the older C grade boys. April & Sonja Rodda & Kyla Davidson all put in an outstanding effort in C Grade Girls, with April & Sonja also putting in a great run in the 800m, well done girls. The D Grade Division 2 girls were all putting in a superb effort with Annabelle Dallas, Bailey Hayburn and Emily Burinaga all racing well. In D Grade Division 1 Ella Davidson put in a great effort with 2nd place in both the 80 & 200m races. Lauren Johnson was all class in the A Grade women’s events winning both the 80 & 200m, and Samantha Chittenden won the double in B Grade. In the Vets Division Darlene Musgrove worked hard on the night doing the sprints and backing up for a superb run in the 2km. The A Grade Men’s sprints were exciting to watch with Scott Richardson, Byron Goodsell and Mitchell Pink putting in for a great race with Scott taking line honours. Veteran Paul Musgrove wasn’t too far behind the A Grade boys with outstanding races in his 80 & 200m. David Webb kept Paul honest in the sprints with some great results and also did the 800m for some “secret handicap training” !!! In B Grade mens James Crowther won the sprint double. The field events were closely contested in the C grade boys with Charlie Parish finishing in 1st place closely followed by Macauley Dallas in 2nd. In the C Grade Girls April Rodda won the Long Jump with Annie Peace 1st place in Discus. In D Grade Ella Davidson jumped into 1st place in the Long Jump and Tara Mustapic led the field to 1st place in Discus. In the A Grade womens field events Samantha Peace won the Discus and Shotput, Lacey Bruce was close behind for 2nd place. The Veteran Mens Field events saw Doug McNally winning Discus, and Shotput and Paul Davidson in High Jump. Summer Road Run – 4th November, 2011 Round one of series two of the summer road runs was held at the Erowal Bay course, amidst pleasant conditions on Friday evening. A good rollup of twenty plus runners took up the challenge of the arduous course, all vying for a nibble at the chocolate enticer! This week’s top three positions were taken out by the hardworking younger members of the club, mind you; they do have younger, fresher legs than us more mature runners! Congratulations go to Holly Bond, who grabbed first position 10 seconds ahead of second placegetter Dimi Havadjia and placing third was Blake Foggo, 20 seconds behind Dimi. Very close running indeed, well done! Dimi and Blake are running particularly well, improving their times considerably each week, they are two young runners to keep your eyes on. Placing’s 4th through to 8th were stacked like the recent Melbourne Cup, with only 15 seconds between them, fantastic handicapping Mr Handicapper! All results can be accessed on the club website. This Friday night’s running will be held at the scenic Vincentia course, meeting at the Plantation Point reserve at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. Looking forward to seeing you all there and who will win that elusive chocolate this week!

Club News Track and Field - 26th October,2011 A heavy track after recent rain didn’t deter
the enthusiastic athletes from Nowra Athletics Club last Wednesday
night with plenty of action both on the track and on the field. The
track got underway with the 60m sprints, in D Grade Boys Rhys
Burinaga led the way with plenty of determination and great running
shown by club youngsters Lucas Johnson and Ethan Havadjia. In C
Grade Sebastian Webb edged out Hayden Strand to take the wins in the
sprints but it was in the 600m that Hayden Strand kept the pace on
to take a well deserved win. |

Summer Road Run – 28th October, 2011 A pleasantly warm Friday evening saw the start of Series Two of the summer road runs at Cambewarra Village. And what a great night of running it was! Over thirty competitors took part and it was wonderful to see some familiar faces come back to the challenge and friendly rivalry of running. A big warm welcome goes out to Tammy Jones, Alison Strand, Perry Strand, Di Court and The Jeffrey’s, Doug and Bronwyn! Good to see you all back! Having said that, you lot didn’t have to come and win the chocolates, now did you! But you did, and, in my books, that is just showing off! That’s right, taking the accolades for first position was Tammy Jones, a whole minute ahead of second placegetter, Doug Jeffrey and running well to take third place was Di Court. Friday night was also “pairs night”, and of course Tammy, Doug and Di featured in the winner’s circle there as well! First place in the pairs division went to Tammy Jones and Alison Strand; second place went to Doug Jeffrey and Dimi Havadjia and third was taken out by Di Court and Bill Broughton. Congratulations everyone, fantastic effort! However, be aware, a little birdy told me the handicapper has his eyes wide open! This Friday night’s run will held at Erowal Bay, meeting at the Fire Station Park. Be sure to arrive at 6.15pm ready for a 6.30pm start. Looking forward to seeing there!

Nowra Athletics
Club News Track and Field - 19th October Fine weather greeted a good roll up of Nowra Athletics Club members who took part in round 3 of the summer pointscore. Good performances right through the grades were a feature of the competition which got underway with field events at all points of the ground. The highlight of the round were the performances in the lower grades where some fine jumping was noted and in D grade top jumps were recorded by Jessica O’Donnell, Casey Johnson, Bailee Hayburn and Kyra McKinnon in the Girls event while the boys top jumper was Rhys Burinaga. The D graders also recorded good efforts in the Shot Put. The C graders jumped and
threw up a storm as well. A fine long jump from Sebastian Webb
(4.15m) was matched at the other end of the age scale by veteran
Paul Musgrove (4.60m) Charlie and Harry Parrish, Hayden Strand,
MaCauley Dallas and Billy Hayburn were the top throwers. In the sprints Brin McKinnon and Breeana O’Donnell , Hayden Strand, Brennen Tipping and Sebastian Webb were the speedy C graders. The D grade speedsters included Kyra McKinnon, Jessica O;Donnell, Rhys Burinaga and Lucas Johnson. These youngsters are very keen and some great competition is already showing good improvement in their results. The A and B graders and the Veterans are also keen on their particular events. Good throwing and fine efforts on the track were recorded. Doug McNally added to his Veterans Discus record, Kyra Hush, Tori Sayer, Geoff Crook.,Jack and Hayden Rodda, Paul Davidson all threw Discus and Javelin up to their best standard. The Rodda clan were jumping out of their shoes with Liv, Jack and Hayden all high jumping well ,so too the two Pauls Davidson and Musgrove. The track lit up in the sprints with Scott Richardson leading the way followed by Byron Goodsell , Jack and Hayden Rodda and Tim Hughes. These young lads can certainly benefit from racing with a former Australian sprint champion. So too in the ladies events another former Australian champion Lauren Johnston can inspire and encourage the younger athletes. Some of our regular competitors were not with us last Wednesday due to various State meets. One result we note was a Bronze medal for Jade Mustapic in the 200 metres at the State Primary Schools meet in Sydney. An event of interest coming up in November is the State track relay championships. There is a possibility that the Club may enter some teams and anyone interested should advise the Club Secretary, Jan Gibb (44460226) without delay. Some of our runners may also help to form South Coast teams. Wednesday night, round 4 of the summer pointscore will feature series 1 events. Club members are reminded that events start promptly at 6 pm with field events. You should arrive early so that any necessary administration can be completed before starting time. |

Summer Road Run - 22nd October, 2011 The last run for Series One of the Summer Road Runs was held at the deceptively tough 6km Nowra course on Saturday. Warm weather added to the challenge, however, competitors put their best feet forward and gave it a good go; After all, the promise of chocolate as the dangling carrot will always get those feet moving! This week’s winner, a whole 30 seconds ahead of the second placegetter was Eva Moeller-Duhme! Fantastic effort Eva, I think a bit of secret training has been going on! Chasing her was backmarker Darrin Smith and 3rd place was taken out by Paul Jennings, 20 seconds behind Darrin. Hmm, Darrin and Paul, do you think your great running was due to your midweek Indian carbloading dining efforts? Perhaps so! Interestingly, there was only 10 seconds between placing’s 4th through to 9th, that’s six runners in 10 seconds! Not bad handicapping I must say! Series Two of Summer Road Runs will commence this Friday October 28th at the Cambewarra course, meeting at the Village Hall on Main Road. Please note, the start time is 6.30pm, so do arrive at around 6.15pm or so. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Summer Road Run - 1st October, 2011 Cool conditions with the threat of rain didn’t stop the enthusiasm of the light footed runners who ran the tough Culburra 6km course on Saturday. A contingent of twenty plus competitors took up the challenge, using all their strength and strategies to win that elusive chocolate! We even had two runners from the Bankstown Sports Club vying for that pot of gold or should I say, pot of chocolate! But alas there can only be one winner, and this week’s winner, ahead by a whole 30 seconds, was none other than Dimi Havadjia! Well done, Dimi, although I do wonder If amidst that giant head of hair of yours, you have wings hidden, giving you a flying start! Second place went to Dean “Corner Cutter” Bryce after tussling with Michelle Cumming the last couple of hundred metres, he pipped her at the post. Michelle earned her third placing graciously, being only two seconds behind Dean. However, she now has you in her sights Deano, look out! The Fitzroy Falls Marathon was also held on Saturday, with some Nowra Athletic Club runners braving the tough endurance course. Alex Pitkethly ran like a demon to win the 10km race in a time of 36.20, ahead of the second placegetter by a whole 41 seconds, amidst a field of 119 runners! Well done, Alex, fantastic effort! Congratulations must also go to Ed Egan and Scott Johnson who also put a fine effort in the 10km race. Angela Bond contested the 5km course, and, having a fantastic run, she was the third female home! Great effort Angela! Congratulations also go to Annie Schofield, Karan Kenny and Eric Moeller-Duhme who all ran the gruelling 42km marathon! Such an incredible achievement, lots of salt baths ahead I’m sure! Track and Field
Season 2011/2012 Commences 14th September |
|||
|
The Track and Field season has something for everyone with field events of High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus and Javelin and the running events offer both sprint events from 60m up to 400m and middle to long distance from 800m up to 3km. The competition is graded into senior and junior age groups then athletes compete in various divisions so all levels of ability are catered for. For those athletes seeking extra competition the highlight of the Track and Field Season is the Athletics NSW Country Championships in January, in 2012 this event will be again held at Glendale Sports Centre in Newcastle. Club members look forward to great competition from their fellow country clubs and a nice dose of social enjoyment too ! Rumour has it that our “old fellas” are in secret relay training so it sounds like the 10 second challenge posted last year will be red hot. Athletics NSW also host a variety of events like the NSW Youth Championships and our up and coming athletes are well represented there. If Track and Field sounds like something for you or your family, please arrive at Ron Brown Sports Ground at Shoalhaven tonight (14th September) with registration from 5.30pm, events start at 6pm, with the club pointscore commencing the following week. We look forward to seeing you there ! |

Summer Road Runs Commenced 3rd September
A small
number of enthusiastic runners took up the challenge of running the
annual string relay from Bendeela on Sunday 11th September. Although
numbers were down, an enjoyable day was had amidst spectacular
spring weather. Well done Kevyn Davis, Lisa Carroll, Darren Smith,
Brad Sawyers and Ed Egan. Everyone ran between 15kms and 19kms and
Brad backed up after running his first half marathon, great effort
Brad. A special mention must also go to Ed Egan who was feeling
rather wounded after a night of revelry! -“One chance is all you need.” -Jesse Owens.
